| “ | Time, gravity and space are the fundamental cogs that make up the clockwork of reality. If we can learn to manipulate them, the universe and its secrets will be ours. | „ |
| ~ Cosmogenesis ascension perk description. |
The Cosmogenesis are some of the main protagonists of the 4X strategy game Stellaris.
Unlike the other Crises in the game, this one is directly caused by either the player or another ambitious empire. This route can be taken by any empire that seeks it. After unlocking the 4th ascension perk the player can pick the Cosmogenesis perk, and begin the journey to manipulate reality as they see fit.
They serve as one of the three playable Crisis Aspirant paths (alongside Galactic Nemesis and Behemoth Fury) and were introduced with The Machine Age DLC.
History[]
| “ | Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should. | „ |
| ~ Stellaris Dev Diary #341 |
The Cosmogenesis empire starts out as a standard empire. Over time however they began to seek more. They came to realize that there is still so much they don't understand. The technology of fallen empires, the cosmic leviathans, and various other things remain out of their reach. They seek learn more and understand all their is to know no matter the cost. Though the journey of doing this would cause much destruction it would be a fair price to pay for the results.
The Synaptic Lathe, where the death of millions allows for fast research.
In order to achieve this the Cosmogenesis Empire needs to produce "Advanced Logic" a powerful scientific resource produced by various means. The most prominent and efficient way of doing so is the construction and use of the "Synaptic Lathe" a massive nexus that attaches organic brains and machines alike to a super computer system that harvests their brain power and uses it to streamline research. This however comes at a cost. The process of doing so is draining on the body and leaves organics brain dead and machines destroyed via overload. As they ascend further and further down the crisis path they unlock new abelites, and access to tech only available to the fallen empires during their prime.
Unlike the Galactic Nemesis route, the Cosmogenesis empire is less so malicious in nature and more so dangerously reckless in their pursuit of knowledge. Despite the damage they will cause along the way, they view what they do as morally good due to all the amazing tech they can use. Even a pacifistic xenophile empire can believe that what they are doing is the right thing.
After reaching crisis level 5, the Cosmogenesis empire can use the applied infinity thesis technology. This must be used twice, and each time the cosmogenesis empire proceeds to warp reality in a number of ways. This ranges from distorting time on a world, to managing to tear a hole in reality into the shroud, a psionic dimension. Eventually however the Cosmogenesis empire comes to the realization that due to the mass violence and suffering caused in this reality the amount of reality manipulation is extremely limited.
The final stage of the Cosmogenesis Project, announcing the ability to construct the Horizon Needle.
The Cosmogenesis empire then elects to build the Horizon Needle. A massive star ship capable of fitting their entire populace aboard it and via the use of a blackhole, they can head to a new, younger universe in which they can manipulate to their liking. After they successfully do this they will leave the galaxy, and a control group will remain behind in order to study the after effects of their departure.
As the Horizon Needle departs the jump to the next reality heavily damages the galaxy. Time temporarily distorts and causes havoc. After their departure much of the galaxy is in ruins. Many worlds are destroyed or devastated after the jump, with many more being damaged and countless people killed. Some stars go super nova and destroy all in their orbit. The control group of the Cosmogenesis Empire becomes a fallen empire, ironically becoming the very thing they wanted to avoid.
Endings[]
The fate of the cosmogenesis empire depends on how they depart the galaxy and various other factors of their empire.
Exiting via a random black hole[]
Should the Cosmogenesis Empire leave the galaxy via a random blackhole they will enter a different reality. This reality is no different than their old one and is immune to most of their reality changes. As a result they simply repair the damages to the horizon needle and move on to another until the day comes where they find a universe they can mold to their liking.
Exiting via the central galactic black hole[]
Should the Cosmogenesis Empire exit the galaxy by entering the black hole in the galaxy's center they will enter the shroud, a dimensional plane that is home to vast psionic entities. They come to realize that this place is not welcoming of them and move on, realizing that they have a long journey ahead of them.
Central galactic black hole with a patron[]
If the Cosmogenesis Empire is psionic, has a shroud patron and enters the central galactic black hole, they will arrive in the shroud. They will then meet their patron who is surprised, yet amused they have arrived. Their patron then carves out a small part of the shroud that they may manipulate to their liking.
Central Galactic black hole as Knights of the Toxic God[]
Should the central galactic blackhole be entered if the player has the Knights of the toxic god origin, The Cosmogenesis Empire will meet the toxic god. It will then claim that they have brought forth the weapon it will use to kill all the evils in the multiverse, that being the Horizon Needle. The needle is made into the Horizon Lance and is then used by the Toxic God as a weapon while the populace serves as the knights.
Entering the infinity machine black hole[]
Should the Cosmogenesis Empire enter the blackhole that houses the Infinity Machine two sperate endings can occur depending on the state of the infinity machine.
If the Cosmogenesis Empire did not complete the Infinity Machine questline they will enter an impossibly small universe. By entering they have expanded it and can now manipulate it as they wish.
If the Cosmogenesis Empire helped the Infinity Machine they will arrive in a universe that the Infinity Machine has already built. Despite millions of years already passing there is still room for manipulation, and the empire uses the Infinity Machine as an aid.
Entering the Great Wound black holes[]
Should the Cosmogenesis Empire enter the Great Wound system's central black hole they will arrive in a universe that has just begun. They can then mold it in a way they see fit.
Entering the Dimensional Horror black hole[]
Should the Cosmogenesis Empire decide to enter the blackhole that was formed by the Dimensional Horror they will arrive in an incomprehensibly horrific plane of existence. There the Cosmogenesis Empire does what they can to survive against the horrors of this universe.
Obsessional directive black hole[]
Should the Cosmogenesis Empire be a machine empire with the Obsessional Directive civic they will arrive in a universe and proceed to fill it with quality consumer goods. They will then endlessly travel to new universes and repeat this forever.
L-Cluster black hole[]
If the Cosmogenesis Empire enters the Terminal Egress blackhole in the L-Cluster they will arrive in a universe filled with dead nanites. They then repair the nanites and then begin to reshape the universe.
Worm in Waiting black hole[]
If the Cosmogenesis Empire enters the Blackhole made by The Worm In Waiting they will enter an empty universe with the Worm in Waiting. The worm will embrace them and promise to take care of them.
