| “ | I am the rightful owner of this continent. It was mine, all mine, every insect and blade of grass and grain of sand. I ruled it all. And then you came, with your outsized brains and your clumsy crushing talons and your fire. And you stole it from me. | „ |
| ~ Cottonmouth as Hawthorn on his hatred of dragons. |
Cottonmouth is the overarching antagonist of the Wings of Fire third arc, The Lost Continent Prophecy. He is a male human who first appeared in the Wings of Fire novel The Flames of Hope, serving as the true mastermind behind the Othermind, as well as the creator of the Breath of Evil plant.
Appearance[]
When Cottonmouth was younger, he wore silky, royal wrappings with edges adorned with silver filigree thread. Later, he was spotted with long brown hair, a vivid green feather wrapped in with gold thread, harsher wrappings, and a new scar over one temple. His cloak has gold pendants on each shoulder. He wore feathers sewn into his graying hair, and his facial grooves deepened during his quest to control dragons, particularly between his eyes and along his forehead. His tone was dismissive and flat. He was sitting on a throne, wearing thick black gloves, when Luna came across him in the abyss. Through his skull, the breath of evil spread, split behind his head, and poured out. His eyes were gazing and blank, covered in a white film and overlaid with a mossy green shimmer.
Personality[]
Cottonmouth was evil, unstable, and quickly agitated. In addition, he felt at ease and thrilled by the idea of mastering as many animals as possible. In addition, he was conceited, self-assured, haughty, power-hungry, domineering, and self-assured. Cottonmouth would stop owning a dragon if it caused him more agony than he could handle because he was a coward for feeling any kind of suffering. Since he was said to be the kind of person who would only be interested in photos if he was in them, he was narcissistic. He thought he was the world's ruler and that everyone aspired to be him.
History[]
Pre-Series[]
Cottonmouth was a scientist and the ruler of an empire in the ancient Sky Kingdom and he was the man who came up with using dragons as biological weapons, with experiments on taming dragons lead to Scorching on Pyrrhia, and he escaped to continue his experiments on Pantala. The final egg he hatched was a female proto-dragon he named Lizard. Cottonmouth would wait for centuries as the new dragons proliferated, established their own tribes, and thrived, his control over the fauna severed and his breath of evil plants all but extinct. Cottonmouth would not be granted the opportunity to act again until the Tree Wars. Cottonmouth received his first dragon host after a dragon by the name of Hawthorn rediscovered the breath of evil and proposed attempting to use it to manipulate Queen Wasp. Cottonmouth and Wasp made a "agreement" after Cottonmouth realized that her poison could be used to infect other dragons. It encouraged Cottonmouth to infect as many other dragons as she could while granting her control over them. She would still report to Wasp, though, and Lizard and Cottonmouth could suddenly take control of any other dragon that Wasp had infected.
The Poison Jungle[]
When Sundew and the others reached Hawthorn's house fifty years later, Cottonmouth would deceive the LeafWings into vaporizing the plant's roots. Then, using the smoke, he would infect a large number of SilkWings and LeafWings, eventually taking over the entire continent. But Sundew herself would elude him, thwarting his scheme to utilize her exceptionally powerful leafspeak to disseminate his Breath of Evil over the continent and abroad, therefore regaining his former homeland.
The Flames of Hope[]
Although Cottonmouth was not specifically named in the prologue, Raven did consider a person who had presumably saved them all a long time ago. Cottonmouth was this human. Although not specifically identified, Cottonmouth briefly commandeered a SilkWing at the start of The Flames of Hope. He taunted Sundew with the idea of meeting Belladonna and Blue while he was in the SilkWing, yelling for her to reveal herself. He asked Earwig what had rendered the HiveWing guards comatose. Cottonmouth abandoned the SilkWing's body after she responded that she didn't know, giving Wasp command of the creature. Enraged, he would chastise Wasp for her failure while giving Vole, his current Guardian, the order to Bring [him] the dragon. However, this order proved to be too ambiguous, and Luna and Dusky were eventually abducted and infected as a result. Although it was not the dragon he had hoped for, Cottonmouth and Lizard would spend days playing with Luna, with Cottonmouth excitedly telling her about his memories and demonstrating his ability to possess and control other dragons. After forcing Luna to tell Cricket and Sky to bring Sundew to the Abyss, Cottonmouth entered a trance and took control of his numerous dragons, while Lizard demanded the memories of Luna and Dusky. After Cottonmouth eventually took complete control of Pineapple, Qibli had Moonwatcher examine his mind and find that Dusky, RainWing, and Luna were all infected. Sundew consented to give herself up to Cottonmouth after he declared that Luna was his captive. As Cottonmouth, disguised as Pineapple, started to take Sundew to the Abyss, Luna tried to win over Lizard, who had never had the opportunity to experience being a dragon. Before Qibli, Lynx, Sundew, Tsunami, and Moon share their memories with her—with Moon serving as a "conduit"—Luna has Pineapple share his memories of life and love with Lizard because neither her own nor Dusky's recollections are sufficient to appease the undead dragonet. After successfully persuading Lizard to defy the human to whom she was enslaved, Luna discovers that severing the stalk of the breath of evil that emerges through Cottonmouth's and Lizard's skulls will kill them both, permanently releasing them from the plant. After Lizard frees Luna's body from the vines she had become entangled in, Luna cuts the stalk, killing Cottonmouth and then Lizard (now Freedom) and permanently ending the othermind while Cottonmouth was preoccupied with Sundew and their friends' unexpected battle against the mind-controlled dragons that had arrived to escort the LeafWing to the Abyss.
