Courtney Kennedy is a major antagonist in Ashley Winstead's debut novel "In My Dreams I Hold A Knife". Courtney is a bratty former sorority sister of Duquette University and an eventual fitness influencer, who played an instrumental part in facilitating the murder of another student, Heather Shelby.
Biography[]
Courtney was a narcissistic trust fund child who secretly had significant problems. One notable one was she was dependent on specialty ecstasy pills manufactured in China for weight loss. Many people at the school hated her, but they didn’t tussle with her due to her presence in the college sororities, where she rose social ranks to queen bee. One prestigious honor she wanted was Phi Dealt Sweetheart, a sort of homecoming queen honor at Duquette during its namesake Sweetheart Ball on Valentine’s Day. Courtney pined for the title throughout college, but she was horrified to find out Heather won the crown. As retribution, after Heather had a fight with her boyfriend Jack Carroll and his secret partner Frankie Kekoa, Courtney slipped Heather Courtney’s own drugs. This left Heather vulnerable when she was stabbed to death with scissors by Mark "Mint" Minter, Jessica Miller’s ex-boyfriend and Courtney’s eventual husband.
During Homecoming, Heather’s brother Eric confronted every attending suspect, including Courtney. She, less confident than she felt in school, would constantly insult people, point the finger too rapidly at suspects, and embarrassed herself by fighting with Jessica when she was drunk over losing Mint to Courtney. But her vulnerable side when she was revealed to have drugged Courtney, and she pleaded for her pills back. Jessica commiserated with Courtney due to her own faults and desperation, so she gave Courtney back all but one pill to tide her own until she could get help, leaving the last pill with Eric as evidence. When Mark was revealed to be the killer, he fought Jessica, Brandon "Coop" Cooper, and Frankie with a shard of glass and by setting the bell tower they were all in on fire. Courtney fainted, so she had to be dragged outside. Once Eric shoved Mark out a window, the case of Heather’s murder was closed. Courtney was reported to have been shipped off to rehab immediately by her family.
