Never send a rose dyed black unless as a warning. And if one is sent to you, destroy it along with the sender. Emotionally of course. It's not like we kill people... on purpose.
~ Courtney Shayne
I killed Liz. I killed the teen dream! Deal with it!
~ Courtney confesses her murder on tape.

Courtney Alice Shayne is the main antagonist of the 1999 film Jawbreaker.

She was portrayed by Rose McGowan.

She is the most popular girl at Reagan High School, along with her friends Julie, Marcie, and Liz Purr, who are known as "The Flawless Four". Courtney and Liz rule the school together, but in very different ways: while Courtney is feared throughout the school for her cruelty and vindictiveness, Liz is beloved by students and teachers alike as the "Princess Diana of Reagan High". This does not sit well with Courtney.

One day, on Liz's 17th birthday, Courtney leads Julie and Marcie in puling a prank on her. While wearing masks, they kidnap her, gag her with a jawbreaker, put her in the trunk of Courtney's car, intent on taking her to a surprise birthday breakfast. When they open up the trunk to take a picture of her, they discover, much to their horror, that she is dead, having choked to death on the jawbreaker.

Courtney devises a plan to bring her back to her home and make it looked like she had been raped and murdered. However, Fern Mayo, the school outcast, is charged by their teacher to bring her homework and she overheard their argument about what to do about Liz. Courtney offers Fern a makeover and to teach her how to be popular if she keeps quiet. After a bit of hesitation, Fern accepts.

After the makeover, Courtney renames Fern Vylette. She also takes the place of Julie, whom Courtney casts out of their group for defying her. Sometime during all of this, Courtney goes to a local bar and picks up a man, takes him to Liz's place and makes it look like they had sex. The man was presumably arrested for the crime.

However, much like Frankenstein's monster turned on his creator, "Vylette" becomes more popular than Courtney, which enrages the former Queen Bee. She confronts Vylette, who is not responsive to her threats. Later on, Courtney takes her revenge by making posters revealing Vylette's true identity and putting them all over the school. After the humiliation, Vylette reclaims her identity, and teams up with Julie and Julie's new boyfriend Zack to get even with Courtney.

Courtney attends the senior prom with Liz's boyfriend, jock Dane Sanders, and they are voted the King and Queen of the prom. Julie finds recorded audio evidence of Courtney claiming responsibility for Liz's death. At the prom, Zack rigs the school's P.A. system to playback the recording of Courtney repeatedly saying "I killed Liz, I KILLED THE TEEN DREAM. Deal with it."

Horrified and angered by her actions, the students turn against Courtney, shouting obscenities and throwing their corsages at her as she attempts to run for the door. At the end of the crowd, Julie takes a picture of Courtney's humiliation and despair. Her final fate is unknown, but it is assumed that she is arrested for killing Liz.
