Whaddaya mean wimpy?
~ The Crab's response to Fly calling him wimpy.

The Crab is a major antagonist in the 2000 Danish animated film Help! I'm a Fish.

He is a king crab who serves as a minion of Joe.

He was voiced by Ulf Pilgaard in Danish and David Bateson (who also played the Shark in the same film and Agent 47 in the Hitman video game series) in English.

Biography[]

When Joe acquired the antidote that enhanced the intelligence of fish, he found the Crab and gave him a little drop. Afterward, the Crab became enhanced, and became the leader of an army of crab soldiers. The Crab became one of Joe's minions, alongside Joe's enforcer, the strong but dimwitted Shark.

Once Joe captured Fly, Chuck and Stella and locked them into the cage, Crab counted repeatedly, Fly then insults the Crab by calling him "a poor excuse for a soldier". And compared him to what a real soldier is like. While angered by this, Crab tries to prove how strong he is, and is about to chop the bars with his claw, to demonstrate his strength. But he believes that cutting the bars is too easy for him, and fly tries to convince him to cut the bars, but the Crab instead chopped the key in half, and fell asleep until Stella's seahorse friend Sasha disturbed him. Sasha succeeded in giving Fly the key, but the Crab breaks the cage and was about to attack them. Fly throws the key out of the way which the Crab ran to grab the key, while distracted, Fly calls out the Crab as he turned around and Fly pushing the crate hook that Knicks him out. While the children are being cornered by Joe and Shark, Fly tricks the Crab who is blinded by his metal helmet to attack Joe. After Fly, Chuck, Stella and Sasha escaped, Joe was furious about the Shark and the Crab's failure to capture the children, as he attempted to start an execution to the latter. Joe then tried to make Shark eat the Crab first, and then eat himself, until Shark realizes what Joe is trying to make him do and growls at Joe. Joe immediately changes his mind and appoints an random Seabass as chief executioner, but the Shark devoures the Seabass out of spite, Which led to Joe appointing Shark as commander as a way to distract him.

Crab, Joe, the Shark and their armies eventually find the group. Once Joe tried to offer Fly and his family to join his empire, and become his new commander after firing Shark after being fed up with his stupidity. However Crab tried to convince Joe that he wanted to be the commander, believing Fly would not fit to be the new commander, but Joe cuts him off, and insults him. While the Shark berates Joe for replacing him, Fly, Chuck, Stella, and Sasha tried to run and escape with the potion. But an angry Crab grabbed the potion while Fly is holding, and he hits him with his claw which causes to fall over the ground, Fly manages to kick the Crab out of the way as the Crab falls down the ground far from Fly. Fly then tried to use the potion as a bat to defend himself from Crab. The Crab rises up from the ground and looms menacingly at Fly while uttering a ferocious snarl at him. Fly could look up at Crab in horror, The Crab, having enough with the little fish's humiliating him from their first encounter, raises his claw and violently hits Fly, mortally wounding him. After striking down Fly, he grabbed the potion and he declares that he would be the new ruler of the ocean, betraying Joe in the process. He drank the potion which causes him to mutate into a more anthropomorphic form upon drinking the potion, replacing his claws with hands. And he was able to stand on his hind legs. The potion caused Crab to become more greedy and egoistical, he ordered his crab army to praise him as their new king. Upon hearing Stella's cries from behind. The Crab was amused by the latter's grief over the injured Fly and decides to order the army to corner them. However, his plans were stopped by a whirlwind caused by Professor Mac Krill's suction device, resulting in Crab, Joe, and the Shark and their armies getting sucked up. Crab got into a heated argument with Joe and the Shark, which ended when the Shark devoured him.

Appearance[]

Having been transformed by the antidote, he has a large head with an enlarged chin and sharp teeth. He wears a metal helmet on his head. Later, after drinking more antidote, he gets hands and starts standing on his hind legs.

Personality[]

The Crab had a simple animalistic personality before getting the antidote, but after getting it, he became a cunning commander and dogmatic soldier, although a little vain (a trait and weakness fly exploits to escape) and cantankerous. Initially he was truly sycophantic to Joe and followed his orders blindly. The Crab also enjoys counting, repeatedly saying "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6." while watching over Fly and his friends. When Crab drank even more of the the antidote and became more enhanced, he also became arrogant and egotistical, betraying Joe in order to become the ruler of the ocean by using an all-crab armada to overwhelm Joe's forces.

Trivia[]

  • Out of all the villains, Crab is the one that came closest to successfully kill the protagonists. However, unlike Joe, who is always portrayed seriously, Crab is often shown to have comedic moments and is not treated as a sufficient threat for most of the film, especially when combined with his undignified demise, in which he literally is devoured by the Shark after declaring himself the new leader.
  • There is a noticeable animation error with Crab's facial features in some scenes, where his lips would change from black to gray. And after striking down Fly, half of his his face become gray matching the color of his chin.
