~ Álvaro Neves to Max at the Imperial Palace Hotel. |
The Crachá Preto are the secondary antagonists of the 2012 video game Max Payne 3. They are a vigilante militia led by ex-UFE captain Álvaro Neves that is engaged in a war against Comando Sombra and other Favela gangs in São Paulo, Brazil. It is later revealed that they are taking part in an organ harvesting operation, with the express purpose of financing Victor Branco's mayoral campaign.
Biography[]
Background[]
The Crachá Preto militia was founded by Neves and other police officers sometime in 2006. Initially financed by wealthy residents of the city, like businessmen, they group was formed to commit extrajudicial killings against criminals in under-policed areas of São Paulo. A year later, Neves would recruit an ex-soldier named Milo Rego, who would go on to become his right hand man within the militia, and over time, the group would devolve into yet another gang, fighting with favela gangsters over control over the favelas, and taking them over, while starting to oppress, torture, and murder innocent civilians within the favela, being responsible for the mass murder of 300 homeless people in 2008, as well as the deaths of various community leaders, judges, witnesses, and politicians.
At some point, before 2012, the Crachá Preto began working for a local politician named Victor Branco and the leader of the UFE, Armando Becker. The group's already existing organ harvesting operation, where they would kill the people they kidnapped, harvest their organs, and sell them to rich and "decent" people, was directed to benefitting Victor's campaign for mayor of São Paulo. It had also been rumored that Victor had used the Crachá Preto to "clear out" land so that his brother, a wealthy businessman named Rodrigo, could build property in the area.
Max Payne 3[]
In early 2012, Max Payne, whom Victor had hired as a security guard for his family to secretly frame for the ensuing chaos in the city, had his first run-in with the Crachá Preto when he and Raul Passos, another bodyguard for the Brancos, had come to the Galatians Stadium in an attempt to pay off a ransom to Comando Sombra for the safe return of Rodrigo's wife, Fabiana. This deal would be interrupted by the militia, causing a shoot-out between these three factions, and while Max and Passos would escape, with information on where Comando Sombra was holding Fabiana, the Crachá Preto would make off with the ransom money, with Neves stopping Rego from killing the two bodyguards by claiming they were only ordered to take the money.
Under Victor's orders, Neves and Rego authorized an attack on the Fábricas Branco building as a diversion for Bachmeyer, Becker's second-in-command at the UFE, to assassinate Rodrigo under Victor's orders. Max, who was in the building at the time, killed most of the militiamen, but was unable to save Rodrigo from Bachmeyer. A bomb that Bachmeyer planted would destroy the building, leaving only Max and a few militiamen, one of whom Max interrogated for the whereabouts of Fabiana, with Max leaving the building alive.
A day later, after Max arrived at the Nova Esperança favela in what would be a failed attempt to rescue Fabiana from Comando Sombra, Victor sent the UFE into the favela to destroy both the gang and Max, with the Crachá Preto serving as back-up. While Max fought through the favela warzone, the UFE would hand over people they kidnapped to the militia as part of the organ harvesting operation, along with Giovanna Taveres, Fabiana's sister, and Marcelo, Victor's younger brother who was working with him, but defied his orders in an attempt to save Fabiana himself. Rego and some militiamen would attempt to execute the two via necklasing, in order to justify the UFE's brutality to the public, but Max intervened, killing Rego and saving Giovanna, but failing to rescue Marcelo.
After the two escaped the favela, the Crachá Preto later tracked them down near a public telephone with the help of an informant in the São Paulo Police Department. Despite the militia's efforts, Max would fight through the city and got Giovanna out safely with Passos, whom she had been romantically involved with, and was pregnant with their unborn child. Max, with the help of a detective named Wilson Da Silva, would travel to the Imperial Palace Hotel, which the militia had used as their base of operations. It was here where Max found out about the organ harvesting ring, and while fighting through the Crachá Preto, Max would decided to destroy the building, and the operation, by detonating C4 around support pillars.
Neves would confront Max on the abandoned hotel's rooftop, with the two admonishing each other before the latter detonated the C4, with a shoot-out between Max and the militia ensuing. However, Max would lose his balance as the building began to collapse, and Neves held him at gun point, only to be shot in the head by Passos, who had come back to save Max. The two would escape via helicopter, and with their leaders killed and headquarters demolished, the Crachá Preto would cease to exist, with the UFE, Bachmeyer and Becker, and eventually Victor following suit not long after.
