Aye, Wallace rode into his bed chamber and killed him. More a liability now then ever he was. And there's no telling who'll be next.
~ Craig about William Wallace.

Craig is a Scottish noble serving as Robert de Brus' right-hand man and a major antagonist in the 1995 Mel Gibson film Braveheart.

He was portrayed by John Kavanagh.

Biography[]

Craig was one of the highest ranking nobles in Scotland and a personal advisor of the rightful heir to the throne of Scotland, Sir Robert the Bruce. He was also a friend of his father and fellow noble Robert de Brus. That gave him special power among nobles in the Scottish high council. When William Wallace started the Scottish War of Independence, Craig, even though not agreeing with some of his actions, he supported the rebellion.

He personally joined the Scottish army in the Battle of Stirling bridge, representing Robert the Bruce. He along with the other nobles, showed fear when he heard about the might of the Northern English Army that was approaching and agreed with his fellow noble Mornay about having to negotiate. William Wallace and his forces arrived and personally made sure that no negotiations between the nobles and the English would be made. Craig along with the rest of the Scottish cavalry retreated following Wallace's plan and later outflanked the English, winning a complete victory.

Craig himself gave Wallace the rank of Knight during a ceremony in the Scottish council chambers and declared him High Protector of Scotland. He then advised Rober the Bruce, that they must be in good terms with Wallace as other fractions and clans who were after the throne would do the same. A fight started between clans, with Craig trying to stop it. Wallace announced that he will be invading England and Craig told him that it was impossible. When the English under King Edward I of England were about to attack once again at Falkirk, Craig along with the other nobles suggested to negotiate as this time their force was even bigger and believed that this battle could not be won. Wallace decided to fight instead. Craig himself didn't send his forces into battle unlike Mornay and Lochlan who joined Wallace but betrayed him mid-battle. That act, as well as Robert the Bruce saving Wallace in the last moment, may have saved him from sharing the same fate as Mornay and Lochlan who were both killed by Wallace for their betrayal. Craig himself was present when Lochlan's dead body was thrown by Wallace into the table while he and other nobles along with Robert were having a meal.

Wallace was wanted for years by Longshanks and the Scottish nobles. In order to captured him, Craig was approached by Rober de Brus who set up a trap for him. Craig personally met Wallace and asked him to meet them in Edinburgh in order for them to swore loyalty to him as Longshanks was a liar and could not be trusted. Wallace didn't trust him but when Craig revealed that it was Robert the Bruce's idea he accepted. When he entered the city he was ambushed and beaten by English troops. Robert tried to save him but was also beaten and Craig tried to protect him saying that according to the arrangement Bruce shouldn't be harmed. Wallace was soon executed and Robert the Bruce became the King of Scotland with Craig remaining as his top advisor for years. He was present in the Battle of Bannockburn, where his King was initially planning to surrender to the English Army. Soon Robert changed his mind and decided to fight, much to Craig's frustration.

Personality[]

Craig was a very intelligent noble who proved to be more dangerous and clever than his fellow nobles Mornay and Lochlan as instead of openly opposing Wallace, he kept a low profile, often pretending to be polite and friendly thus escaping from his wrath. His close relationship with Robert the Bruce also helped, as that made people trust him. Just like the other nobles, Craig was opportunistic and cowardly and wanted to keep his power even if he had to turn against his own people.
