~ Craven Edge's last words and breakdown |
Craven Edge is a supporting antagonist in the first campaign of the D&D web series Critical Role, as well as the first season of its animated adaptation The Legend of Vox Machina, and a major antagonist in the second season.
It is magical, sentient greatsword wielded by Sylas Briarwood, until his death, where Grog Strongjaw took it afterword. Embued with negative energy, Craven Edge drains blood and strength of those it cuts through. But no matter how much it takes, it's never enough to satiate its bloodlust and constantly demands more from its wielder.
It was voiced by Matthew Mercer, who also voices Sylas Briarwood, Orthax, and Umbrasyl in the same series.
Appearance[]
Craven edge is a large, black onyx greatsword with a curved blade and a red gem at the pommel.
Personality[]
The main thing the drives Craven Edge is the urge to drink blood from its victims. It is always eager to participate in battle, as drawing blood is to be expected. It is an extortionist too as if it goes too long without being fed blood, it will absorb blood from whoever wields it. True to it's name, Craven will try to take it's wielder down with it in some way if it is going to be destroyed.
Critical Role[]
Background[]
Craven Edge became sentient after an unknown man, who sought wealth and power made a deal with an evil deity. However, the man did not know what exactly the deal entailed. The deity bound the man's soul into a greatsword, condemning his soul to eternally be thirsty for blood and thus, Craven Edge came to be.
Winter's Crest in Whitestone[]
Percival de Rolo handed Craven Edge to Grog, as he was the only member of the party capable of wielding it. The sword then spoke to Grog asking, if he was its new wielder. Grog asked if he could name the sword, "Bacon". Though exasperated by this, the sword asked Grog to pledge his allegiance to it and Grog agreed.
Echoes of the Past[]
Grog used Craven Edge to decapitate Riskel Daxio. The action gave Grog a sense of dopamine.
A Name is Earned[]
Grog soon realized Craven Edge was drawing strength from the victims he was using it to cut through. The following night, Grog stayed awake with the sword. Grog asked Craven how it it felt about it's previous owner, Sylas Briarwood. Craven claimed Sylas kept it fed on a regular basis. The next day, a battle ensued with Kamaljiori. Grog gained as much strength as he could from the blade, which grew longer as it drained blood and power. Eventually, a tornado lifted Grog and sent him to the Plane of Air. Grog tried to keep Craven Edge tied with a Chain of Returning and through it into the battlefield, accidentally running through Pike in the process.
Best Laid Plans...[]
After the fight, Vox Machina need to recover and rest. Grog joined them this time. However, Craven kept demanding Grog to feed it. Grog tried to walk away, but suddenly died. Craven had absorbed his lifeforce. Pike noticed this, and threw the sword as far away as she could and tried to resurrect Grog with a revivify spell. Percy demanded the sword release Grog's soul. Percy and Craven squared off with shadowy forms. When Grog was resurrected, he immediately reached for the sword. The party pleaded for Grog to surrender the sword, but Grog refused as he needed it to kill his uncle, Kevdak. Pike assured him they would find another way before severing the connection between Grog's soul, and the blade. Keyleth then used Plane Shift to banish Craven Edge to the Dread Emperor's realm forever.
The Legend of Vox Machina[]
Season 1[]
Sylas attended Uriel's banquet with Deliah, bringing Carven Edge with him, though he kept it well hidden. When Vox Machina fought them, Sylas drew the sword, slashing Grog a few times, displaying the blade's capabilities. Sylas gradually gained the upper hand against Grog as he continued to slash him with Craven Edge until he and Delilah fled.
At the battle of the Ziggurat, Sylas used Craven Edge again, and met his rematch with Grog. After Sylas was killed by Keyleth, Grog picked up the sword for himself.
Season 2[]
Craven plays a much more prominent role this season
Grog carried Craven Edge into various other battles. Craven slowly, but gradually became more ferocious and bloodthirsty due to the blade's influence. Craven frequently demanded Grog to feed it. Grog was a bit unsettled but ultimately rolled with it.
In the stand off with Kamalijori, Craven threatened to draw all of Grog's blood if Grog would not feed it. When Umbrasyl arrived, Grog used Craven Edge to slash at the black dragon, drawing a lot of blood from him. Craven demanded more. Grog stuck around to try and fight the dragon while the other party members tried to flee. Pike desperately tried to get Grog to come with them, but Grog instinctively swung the blade, accidentally running Pike through in the process, much to the goliath's dismay. Grog, Scanlan, & Pike got separated from Keyleth, Percy, Vex, & Vax during a teleport spell that Umbrasyl botched. The three of them ended up in a desert. While healing herself, Pike pleaded Grog to surrender Craven Edge, but Grog was entering a blood frenzy and her words were being blocked out. Craven goaded Grog into killing the gnomes, claiming they were just jealous of his power. Grog prepared to actually murder them, but after seeing Pike's horrified face, he came to his senses and started swinging Craven Edge into various rocks. He embedded the sword into to large rocks, using all of his might to snap the blade in two. But Craven would not go alone. Just before the blade was destroyed, it exploded in a burst of red energy, stripping away Grog's muscles in the process.
