~ Cregan Stark to Aegon III, Corlys Velaryon and the Lads upon his arrival. |
Lord Cregan Stark, known as the Wolf of the North and the Old Man of the North in his later life, is a supporting character in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and its television adaptation House of the Dragon.
He was Lord of Winterfell and the head of House Stark during the reigns of Kings Viserys I Targaryen, Aegon II Targaryen, the short-lived reign of Rhaenyra Targaryen, Aegon III Targaryen, and Daeron I Targaryen. During the Dance of the Dragons, he pledged his support to the Blacks and to Princess Rhaenyra after the formation of the Pact of Ice and Fire with the latter's son, Prince Jacaerys Velaryon. Following the death of King Aegon II, Cregan briefly served as Hand of the King to King Aegon III during a series of days that are well-remembered as the Hour of the Wolf. He is also known to have destroyed the Free Folk raiding bands of Sylas the Grim, who plundered the lands of the Gift during the Winter Fever epidemic, in the long winter after the Dance.
Cregan had a younger brother who died in his youth. According to the court fool Mushroom, he also had a bastard half-sister named Sara Snow, though her existence is doubted by most historians, including Archmaester Gyldayn, as anything revolving around it comes solely by Mushroom himself, who is known to have loved scandal and sensationalism, and never went to Winterfell in the first place.
Cregan was thrice married: with his first wife, Lady Arra Norrey, he had a son named Rickon. With his second wife, Lady Alysanne Blackwood, he fathered four daughters named Sarra, Alys, Raya, and Mariah. With his third wife and distant cousin, Lady Lynara Stark, he fathered Jonnel, Edric, Lyanna, Barthogan, and Brandon. Cregan outlived his eldest son, who died fighting for King Daeron I against Dorne. Long after Cregan's death, one of his grandsons, Lord Beron Stark (son of Brandon), was killed by Lord Dagon Greyjoy's Ironborn, during the reign of King Aerys I Targaryen.
In the TV series House of the Dragon, Cregan is portrayed by Tom Taylor.
Appearance[]
Cregan Stark has grey eyes, which reminded Septon Eustace of a winter storm.
Personality[]
Cregan was a stern and formidable man and was a good friend to the Night's Watch, much like the rest of the Starks. His closest friend was said to be Lord Cerwyn. As in accordance with his duties and that of his family, Cregan is a man of honor as he always stayed true to his words and allegiances. This is known as after Rhaenyra was murdered by her half-brother King Aegon II, Cregan Stark refused to surrender and continue fighting for the Blacks, but because Rhaenyra is now dead, he now began to support her supposed last-surviving son, Prince Aegon the Younger.
While the Rivermen were welcomed by King's Landing, however, Cregan Stark seems to be a fearsome individual, as his arrival struck fear into the hearts of smallfolk living in the capital and even the Lads, due to stories told by Medrick and Torrhen Manderly that gave the Northmen a dark reputation. Moreover, Cregan proved to be ruthless and unforgiving towards those who supported King Aegon II, as he sought to march on Oldtown, Casterly Rock, and Storm's End so as to punish Houses Lannister, Hightower, and Baratheon for betraying Rhaenyra.
During the Hour of the Wolf, he became paranoid and distrustful of anyone he suspected had poisoned King Aegon II, and he would not hesitate to arrest them by force. This paranoia even extended to the point where he suspected that any of Aegon's envoys would return with sellswords to support his cause. Cregan became really protective of Aegon III and didn't hesitate to imprison him in Maegor's Holdfast.
Quote[]
“ | Corlys: The killing has gone too long, Rhaenyra and Aegon are dead. Let their quarrel die with them. You speak of taking Storm's End, Oldtown, and Casterly Rock, my lord, but the men who held those seats were slain battle, every one. Small boys and suckling babes sit in their places now, no threat to us. Grant them honorable terms, and they will bend the knee. Cregan: Small boys become large men in time, and a babe sucks down his mother's hate with his mother's milk. Finish these foes now, or those of us not in our graves in twenty years will rue our folly when those babes strap on their father's swords and come seeking after vengeance. |

Trivia[]
- In a deleted scene for the final episode of House of the Dragon's second season, "The Queen Who Ever Was", Cregan Stark was originally going to march together with the Winter Wolves at their head as they cross the Twins[1] but the scene was cut during post-production, as it doesn't comply with source material and to ensure the ending would stay mostly faithful to the books[2]. This is because in Fire & Blood, while the Winter Wolves did partake in the Dance of the Dragons, Lord Cregan stayed out of most of the civil war and remained in the North until after Rhaenyra's fall from power. Though he marched with an assembled host of 10,000 Northmen to the Crownlands so they could support Rhaenyra, however, because of their slow progress, he was too late when she was killed by Aegon II.
