The Criminal Filmmakers are the main protagonists of the narrative tape in V/H/S.

They were portrayed by Calvin Reeder (Gary), Kentucker Audley (Rox), Lane Hughes, who also portrayed Fox Mask in You're Next (Zak) and Adam Wingard (Brad).

Biography[]

The filmmakers first appear in the first scene of the film, driving through a parking lot until they see a couple going inside a building They stop and get out of the car, running to where they are to sexually assault the woman. They later flee after the boyfriend chases them down, but with their recording in hand.

In the next scene, they are seen in a snowy place with baseball bats to break the windows of an apparently abandoned house. Then they go inside that house, and they start breaking the furniture, hitting the walls and the ceiling, and even painting graffiti around it.

Later they show us an intermission of a tape of Zak having sex with a woman, with that woman not aware that Zak put on a camera. At the end of that intermission, she realizes that and asks him quite annoyed if it is his camera, and also says that it is recording.

At the next scene, they are seen robbing a house, with Rox begins to draw a penis with two markers in a portrait, and asks if someone will buy it. Zak, while he's checking the camera, asks what tape he's recording, and to check the label. At one point, they can see a car pass near the house where they were robbing, they decide to turn off the lights and leave.

Soon, it is revealed to us that the reason why they do this and film it is to sell it and make money, and it is known that they earn fifty dollars. Gary (the leader of the group), begins to want to earn more money, and they were watching the tape where they attacked the girl in the parking lot. Zak, along with Rox and Brad, begin to talk about how to earn more money, and they said they had to record more videos showing girls, and Gary tries to reveal his way to earn more money, but since they were not listening, Gary angrily hits the TV, breaking the screen with the bat. The others get upset with him due to this, but Gary is unperturbed and tells them his plan to earn more money.

Everyone then gets in the car and starts, with Gary revealing that there is an anonymous buyer who was interested in their recordings and called them to steal a VHS tape from a house, with a large cash reward if they deliver.

They finally arrive at the house, Rox notes its size and thinks someone rich lives there, with Gary also noting that he'll personally take care of any witnesses to their deeds. The filmmakers then manage to open the door, and inside the house, they begin to wonder where the tape should be. After splitting up to cover more ground, Rox finds the occupant of the house, an old man, dead.

Rox and Brad call Gary, and when the latter goes up, and discovers the dead old man. Gary believes that Rox and Brad killed him, but they tell him they found him that way. They notice that there are televisions, and they try to know where the tape is, and try to check the VCRs. Zak and Gary go down again to check the basement, with Rox telling Brad to stay with him. Brad initially refuses, probably because of his discomfort with the corpse, but ends up agreeing to check the cassettes. Brad plays one of the VCRs, and watches a tape about a trio of friends trying to make an amateur sex tape, and they come across a succubus who kills them.

Brad strangely disappears after seeing the tape, and when Rox enters and notices this, begins to call him, finding his camera on the floor and picking it up. Gary and Zak reach the basement and see nothing but scrap, and Gary manages to find where the tapes were. However, he sees that there is more than one tape, and orders Zak to bring a bag to put them all. Zak finds a bottle crate and a bag, but at that moment Zak sees a strange figure walking where they were. Zak is alarmed and informs Gary, but he does not believe him, he tells him that maybe he is drugged since there is no one else.

Rox takes two cassettes and puts one in the VCR, turns on and watches a watch a tape about a married couple who traveled to Arizona for their second honeymoon, while the wife has a mistress who begins to stalk them, and ends up killing the husband.

Rox is impressed by the tape he just watched, and proceeds to insert and play another VHS tape, but he doesn't realize that the old man's corpse has disappeared from the couch. Gary and Zak already with the tapes in the bag come out of the basement, and believe that the cassettes contain images to blackmail, Gary proposes to make copies to do so.

Rox disappears after seeing the second tape he played, and mysteriously the corpse returns where it was. Gary and Zak go upstairs, and they start asking where Rox is. Gary opens the bag, takes out the tapes, and orders Zak to look at what they contain. Zak, uncomfortable with the corpse, refuses, but Gary doesn't care as he goes to find Rox and Brad. Zak takes out the tape that Rox put on, and puts the tape that Gary took out of the bag. Zak puts play, and watches the story about a doctor-in-training who is video chatting with his girlfriend who has a lump on her arm, with and some aliens staling the woman to use as an incubator.

After this, both Zak and the corpse vanish. Gary goes up to inform him that Rox and Brad are nowhere to be found, but notices that Zak is gone. Gary starts calling and looking for Zak, until he finds his decapitated corpse. Gary laughs, believing that it is a joke or it was someone else's corpse, but then when he sees Zak's head and surprisingly also sees the dead old man in a zombie status, Gary is alarmed and tries to escape but falls down the stairs. Gary breaks his leg, and the undead old man then comes down and kills him.
