Crows are considered many things throughout myths and folklore. In Irish mythology, crows are believed to be associated with Morrigan, the goddess of war and death. In other countries, crows are considered to be the reincarnations of slain men, tricksters, ancestral beings, or even heroes to a certain degree. However, more often then not, crows are generally portrayed in a more negative light. In the Appalachian mountains, for example, crows are believed to be the harbinger of death and illness, and that if one were to fly over a person's house and proceed to crow three times, that person is to be marked for death. Crows are also repeatedly associated with local witches, and it is believed that they function as the familiar spirits to these witches. However, even though they are largely seen as bad omens, it is strongly recommended that people should not kill one, because it is said that killing one will bring people bad luck.
