I've got all the numbers in my report. And I'd say your number is up! Because I'm about to put the freeze on you!
~ Crump to Tea Gardner.

Shuzo Otaki otherwise known as Adrian Randolph Crump III in English is a supporting antagonist in the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga/anime series, appearing in the Virtual World story arc as a member of the Big Five under the employment of Noah Kaiba.

He is a former board member and the chief accountant of the Kaiba Corporation, who possesses a deep obsession with both numbers and penguins, and seeks revenge against his former employer Seto Kaiba for rejecting his dream of constructing a penguin themed amusement park. During the Virtual World Arc, following his and the other Big Five’s entrapment in cyberspace, Crump was dispatched by Noah to duel the heroine Téa Gardner in order to escape the Virtual World using her body, thereby becoming her second archenemy following the Hitotsu-Me Giants.

He is voiced by Satoshi Tsuruoka in Japan and by Robert O'Gorman in English.

Biography[]

Crump was born as the only child of a very hardworking couple, who spent the majority of their time tending to their jobs. This, however, left them too busy to spend time with their son, resulting in Crump enduring a very lonely childhood. To cope with his parents’ absence and his lack of friends, Crump spent the majority of his time counting random objects for fun, soon developing a fixation with numbers and mathematics. One day, while counting books on a shelf, he found a book about penguins. In it, he learned that mother penguins cared for their young, causing him to develop a fixation with the flightless birds, due to them possessing the kind of paternal love that his parents seemingly didn’t have for him. This ultimately resulted in him developing an obsession with penguins.

During his adulthood, Crump managed to become a highly successful accountant and businessman, eventually becoming a member of the Big Five at Kaiba Corp. Once Kaiba took over, Crump presented to his new employer the plan for his life-long dream, an all-penguin theme park. Unfortunately, Kaiba mockingly rebuked Crump’s dream in favor of his Duel Monster projects, destroying his dream of a career combining numbers and penguins. This left Crump with a deep hatred of Kaiba and plotted revenge against him.

The Big Five teamed up with Pegasus J. Crawford to take over Kaiba Corp (much like how they teamed up with Kaiba to overthrow Gozaburo Kaiba), but when Pegasus was defeated by Yugi, Kaiba fired them. They trapped Kaiba in the virtual world. Crump controlled the water head, but the Big Five were trapped in the virtual world when the Five Headed Dragon was destroyed. After a while, their bodies were destroyed.

The Big Five soon entered Noah Kaiba's virtual world and began working for him to get revenge on Kaiba and steal bodies from Yugi and the gang. Under Noah’s instruction, Crump went after Téa Gardner soon after her escape from a pack of Hitotsu-Me Giant hunters that Noah had sent to capture her. After luring her to his virtual ice castle, Crump took the form of Nightmare Penguin and therefore was his own deck master. They dueled on top of icebergs in a virtual Antarctica, where whenever a player lost life points, they would be frozen. Crump's deck was ice-themed and many of his monsters were penguins. Ultimately Crump was defeated by Téa and was digitized. However he returned alongside Gansley, Johnson and Lector and argued with Lector over who got to pick whose body to steal first.

Eventually, they entered Taylor's body (which was stolen by Nesbitt) and dueled Yugi and Joey at once. Crump dueled for two turns before Johnson took over, refusing to let him take over at first. After they were defeated, Noah gave them no more chances and deleted them.

Bigfivedead

Noah imprisons the Big Five.

In the 4Kids English dub, Noah imprisoned them each in a different corner of the virtual world. Crump was killed along with Noah, Gozaburo and the other members of the Big Five when Noah caused a satellite attack that destroyed the fortress that the virtual world was stationed in, deleting the virtual world and everyone in it.

Personality[]

Crump’s Personality could be best described as: Extremely Narcissistic, obsessive, cold-hearted, cruel, cunning, abusive, temperamental, sadistic, greedy, ruthless, perverted, callous, power-hungry, duplicitous, slightly naive, arrogant, creepy, zealous and relentless.

Crump is obsessed with penguins. He is also played for comic relief sometimes though ironically he has the most tragic backstory. Despite this, Crump is quite sadistic, more so than the rest of the Big Five, as he intends to leave Téa frozen forever in the virtual world, where the other four merely intended to imprison their victims without being frozen (though it is implied they would suffer through such imprisonment anyway). Crump is also perverted as he creeps out Tea and is hugely admiring of himself in front of her.

Trivia[]

  • Crump somewhat looks like former 45th President of the United States and billionaire, Donald J. Trump. His surname can also rhyme with Trump.
