Crytoon is a grotesque supervillain from DC Comics, first appearing in Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham #1 (2023). Created by Rafael Grampá, Crytoon is a horrifying parody of classic cartoon characters—bringing slapstick violence into brutal reality. He operates in Gotham City and serves as one of the deadly enforcers of the group known as the Stadtgeist.

Biography[]

Crytoon is one of the "Geistermen" of the Stadtgeist, a covert cabal of former Arkham Asylum patients subjected to horrific experiments by Charles Quinton in the children's wing of the asylum. These experiments aimed to forge living weapons by reshaping trauma into violent purpose.

As part of this agenda, Crytoon was assigned to manufacture enormous quantities of explosives for an undisclosed objective. To do this, he had his henchmen abduct homeless people and force them into slave labor. When Batman discovered the operation and attempted a rescue, Crytoon brutally bludgeoned all the kidnapped workers to death. He then confronted and overpowered Batman in combat, leaving him unconscious beside a ticking time bomb, along with the incapacitated guards. Batman barely escaped the explosion.

The following day, Crytoon invaded the home of a producer who held the rights to the original Crytoon cartoon character and forced him to reveal the location of the animation archives. Rather than leaving, he sat silently in front of the man for hours before gruesomely caving in his skull in imitation of a scene from the cartoon series.

That evening, Crytoon traveled to Boble Studios and retrieved a reel from the original Crytoon archive. Batman, having survived the earlier bombing, tracked him there. Crytoon ambushed him, smashing a heavy object over Batman’s head and rendering him unconscious again. While inspecting the reel, he was interrupted by a studio security guard, whom he disarmed and coerced into acting as his getaway driver. During the chase, Crytoon pushed the guard out of the vehicle to delay Batman, but the Batmobile continued to pursue autonomously. After the crash, a civilian tried to help, only for Crytoon to seize her as a hostage.

When Batman confronted him again, Crytoon threatened to kill the woman unless Batman stood down. Batman responded by taking the reel from the truck and threatening to destroy it, prompting Crytoon to release the hostage. Batman then demanded to know where the explosives were, but Crytoon refused, taunting Batman and claiming he had humiliated him by sparing his life twice. In response, Batman viciously beat Crytoon until police arrived. Rather than risk arrest himself, Batman fled the scene, leaving Crytoon to be taken into custody.

At GCPD headquarters, Crytoon was interrogated by Detective Jim Gordon, who was investigating a series of grisly murders. Crytoon denied involvement and mocked the accusation, claiming he found such banal killings beneath him. He refused to say more, but traced a symbol in his own blood on the interrogation table, cryptically pointing toward the Stadtgeist’s headquarters.

A police psychiatrist ordered Crytoon's transfer to Arkham Asylum, but the officers assigned to escort him were secret Stadtgeist operatives with orders to kill him for his capture. During transport, Crytoon escaped from his restraints, stole a gun, killed the agents, and caused the transport to crash in the desert outside Gotham.

Fleeing the wreck, Crytoon took refuge in a remote trailer inhabited by a one-eyed man and a boy named Joe. The boy, fascinated by Crytoon, drew a picture of him. Crytoon defaced the drawing by adding clown makeup and changing the name “Joe” to “Little Joker.” Joe, inspired, painted his face to match and began laughing uncontrollably.

When two more Stadtgeist agents arrived at the trailer, Crytoon killed one and wounded the other. Joe calmly finished the survivor off, slowly pushing a knife through his skull—an act so disturbingly gleeful that even Crytoon appeared unsettled. As Crytoon prepared to leave, Joe begged to come along. The boy’s guardian, terrified, pleaded with Crytoon to take him, offering to hide the bodies and never speak of what happened. After a moment, Crytoon agreed.

He and Joe stole a police vehicle and drove back toward Gotham. When Joe asked where they were headed, Crytoon smiled and said: "To the amusement park."

Personality[]

Crytoon is a twisted fusion of cartoon slapstick and human cruelty. He exhibits a grotesque sense of humor, often mimicking exaggerated cartoon violence in his murders. His mind is fractured, blending fantasy and reality in disturbing ways. He believes himself to be the embodiment of an animated icon and acts accordingly—turning joyful absurdity into terror.
