History[]
“ | Why are the world's criminals being eliminated one by one? Because lord Kira has returned. Lord Kira is a messenger from hell who will not suffer the presence of evil in this world! | „ |
~ A website worshipping Kira on the internet. |
When Light Yagami started to kill the criminals by Death Note, many worshippers appeared in the internet and named the unknown killer "Kira" (Killer in Japanese). Sakura TV's news reporter Hitoshi Demegawa decided to exploit Kira's influence to earn viewership, and started to sensationalize the Kira murders, seeing Kira as a celebrity.
Misa Amane, another Death Note user, noticed Kira was killing criminals and saw Kira as her savior. She sent several video tapes to Sakura TV in the name of Kira. By earning Light's attention, Misa successfully contacted Light and became "the second Kira".
Years after L's death, the cult of Kira gradually expanded all over the world. The televisions were reporting news about Kira, and some countries even endorsed Kira. Light chose Demegawa as Kira's spokesman, turning Sakura TV into a propaganda network for Kira. Demegawa cialmed anyone who tries to catch Kira is a criminal, and instruced his viewers to report the names of anyone who is against Kira so that they can be killed.
“ | I, Demegawa, have finally discovered the hideout of the evil syndicate that plots to capture out god, Kira! I have surrounded with our comrades! I have just received information that the remaining members of the SPK, who have been secretly been active, are hiding in this building! | „ |
~ Demegawa leads a crowd of Kira's followers to vandalize SPK's hideout. |
When Near and SPK started to investigate Kira's identity and became a major threat to Light, Light sent Demegawa the location of SPK's headquarter, and incite his followers to break into the building to kill the SPK members, while Misa monitored the scene trying to find Near's name and write it on the Death Note. The cultists vandalized the building and destroyed everything they see. However, Near used a helicopter to throw off massive amount of money. The cultists started to loot the money and put SPK behind. Light expected Demegawa to expose Near's face on the monitor, but Demegawa was also grabbing money himself. Near safely escaped and the act of inciting cultists against SPK came into failure.
When Light was being watched by Near and could not use Death Note himself, he ordered Misa give up the ownership of Death Note and let Ryuk give it to Kira's most devout follower Teru Mikami, the X-Kira. Mikami was glad to be chosen by Kira, started to act as Kira's enforcer and help Kira "delete" the criminals. Demegawa, however, tried scam money by starting a donation of one million yen to build a palace for Kira. Mikami realized Kira couldn't want this. He made the Shinigami eye deal with Ryuk, before using the Death Note to kill Demegawa and his aides.
After Demegawa died, various TV reporters tried to be Kira's spokesperson. Mikami chose a famous news anchor Kiyomi Takada to be Kira's spokeswoman and deliver the message of Kira. By "investigating" Takada, Light successfully contacted Mikami himself. Light ordered Mikami to make a false Death Note and send five pages to Takada to let Takada do the killing.
“ | Idiot. I doubt he would've said anything important anyway. Death is the only way to pay for crimes against Kira. | „ |
~ Takada's guards after shooting Matt. |
Mello, having realized that Light could faked the death note, decided to kidnap Takada to lure out the real note. However Takada had many bodyguards, all of whom were Kira's fanatical followers. Mello let his assistant Matt distract Takada's bodyguards with a smoke grenade launcher, allowing Mello to kidnap her. When he was cornered, he tried to put up another smokescreen. Matt pretended to surrender to the bodyguards but was shot multiple times to death.
After Light was defeated by Near and killed by Ryuk, Kira's followers started to expect Kira to come back. In the finale of the manga, a group of cultists led a candle-lit ceremony during the middle night on a cliff. An unnamed female follower put down her candle at the edge of the cliff, and pronounced Kira as their savior.
