"Legend of Kira the savior" on the internet.
When Light Yagami started to kill the criminals of the world with the Death Note, many worshippers appeared on the internet and dubbed the mysterious supernatural killer "Kira" (Killer in Japanese) though at the time they were an obscure group and many weren't even sure if Kira existed. Only after the Lind L. Tailor incident did coverage of Kira reach big news networks. Sakura TV's news reporter Hitoshi Demegawa and many other TV stations exploited Kira's name to earn viewership, and sensationalized the Kira killings, turning Kira into a celebrity and bolstering awareness of and support of Kira.
As six years went by and Kira's killings continued unimpeded thanks to L's death, the cult of Kira started expanding all over the world. They became numerous enough that entire countries started accepting Kira and support for Kira became the majority position. Those who had been harmed by criminals like Misa viewed Kira positively. When L (who was actually Light at that time acting as L), ordered world police to stop sharing information on criminals publicly, Kira's supporters swiftly flooded the internet with information, allowing Light to continue. Acceptance of Kira became so prevalent that companies stated their support for Kira in their commercials. Light chose Demegawa as Kira's spokesman, turning Sakura TV into a propaganda network for Kira. Demegawa announced that anyone who tries to catch Kira was a criminal, and instructed his viewers to report the names of those people to him so they could be killed.
“ | I, Demegawa, have finally discovered the hideout of the evil syndicate that plots to capture out god, Kira! I have surrounded with our comrades! I have just received information that the remaining members of the SPK, who have been secretly been active, are hiding in this building! | „ |

Kira's followers insurrect against SPK.
After the United States government caved to Kira and when Near and SPK became a threat to Light he sent Demegawa the location of SPK's headquarters to incite his followers to break into the building to kill the SPK members while Misa monitored the scene trying to find Near's name and write it on the Death Note. The cultists vandalized the building and destroyed everything they saw, however, Near used a helicopter to throw off a massive amount of money which distracted Demegawa and the cultists, allowing Near to escape.

Demegawa scams money by starting a donation to build a palace for Kira.
When Light was being watched by Near and could not use Death Note himself, he ordered Misa to relinquish ownership of the Death Note and let Ryuk give it to one of Kira's most devout followers, Teru Mikami. Demegawa tried to get money by starting a donation of one million yen to build a palace for Kira so Mikami killed him for using Kira's name for his selfish interests. After Demegawa died, various TV reporters tried to be Kira's spokesperson. Mikami chose a famous news anchor Kiyomi Takada to be Kira's spokeswoman. She promoted totalitarian measures by Kira like having children educated in the word of Kira and asking Kira how countries could further support him.
“ | Idiot. I doubt he would've said anything important anyway. Death is the only way to pay for crimes against Kira. | „ |
~ Takada's guards after shooting Matt. |

When Mello kidnapped Takada and had his assistant Matt distract Takada's bodyguards with a smoke grenade launcher, he was shot multiple times to death by the guards, all of whom were fanatical Kira followers. When Takada's death was learned by the public, different news networks again such as Sakura TV started vying for the position of Kira's spokesperson.

Cult of Kira gather around the female Kira worshipper.
After Light was defeated, Kira's killing stopped seemingly abruptly since Near didn't make any information on the case public. The world returns to how it was pre-Kira though Kira's followers remain. A year after Kira's "disappearance", a group of cultists led a candle-lit ceremony in the middle night on a cliff. An unnamed female follower put down her candle at the edge of the cliff, and pronounced Kira as their saviour, praying for his return. What became of the cult in the many years after Light's demise is uncertain though their influence has likely lessened by the time of Minouru Tanaka as schools now teach that Kira was evil.

Trivia[]
- Matt being shot by Takada's bodyguards implies that Kira's ideology and supporters have spread far enough that the police have become more willing to use force.
- In the anime, a student threatened to post one of his peer's names on the internet so Kira could kill him which implies that some Kira supporters posted the names of their non-criminal enemies on the internet to get them killed.
