The Cult of the Flame are supporting antagonists of the 2023 superhero video game Marvel's Spider-Man 2, the third installment of the Insomniac Game universe. They are a terroristic cult who worship the power of fire and are directly targeted and hunted down by Wraith. The Flame often refers to their nemesis, Spider-Man as "The fool's beacon", and frequently discusses "The Crimson Hour", which is described as a day of "truth, judgement and carnage."

History[]

The Cult was founded by Flame, a mentally unstable criminal who evaded Yuri for years by operating under various other cults and aliases. Spider-Man first encounters them when they attack a local care center, learning that Yuri now fired from the police force, operates under the vigilante name "Wraith". After their first encounter, both Peter and Miles come across various Cult of the Flame members attempting to cause chaos throughout New York City. Their crimes include a public branding of innocent bystanders, attempting to blow up oil tanker trucks, and setting various buildings on fire. They will aggressively chase and harm people who they deem "unworthy".

Peter and Wraith would attack their stronghold, an abandoned hospital north of Astoria. Wraith, being more eager to arrest Flame, wanted to jump in, despite Spider-Man seeing it as a trap. The two would confront Flame, with Wraith wanting to outright kill him. Spider-Man would step in, saying that they'd be no better. Wraith would attack Spider-Man, leading to a fight. However, they quickly stopped fighting once they realized they were for the same cause. The Flame, as a result of them fighting escaped and broke free.

While Spider-Man was fighting crime, he managed to spot an outpost operating in a gas station in Brooklyn along with Wraith. Before he could arrive, Wraith did the majority of the attack , causing several guards to go unconscious. Spider-Man tried to follow up, however he did not catch up to Wraith who proceeded to beat The Flame within an inch of his life. Just as she was about to land the final blow, a train was seen heading towards several oil tankers and barrels in which the Cult of the Flame's members had set up. As the train was about to explode, Spider-Man and Wraith stopped the tanker, but not before Spider-Man was trapped holding the train together. The Flame explained to Spider-Man and Wraith that his purpose of being there was to acquire a symbiote which had been discovered within the trains cargo. He then orders his followers to restrain and douse Spider-Man in gasoline, shortly before setting him on fire and taking the container holding the symbiote. Wraith had to make a choice between saving Spider-Man or stopping The Flame, and she chose to save Spider-Man instead. By the time they got on their feet again, the Cult Of The Flame had got away. Both Wraith and Spider-Man agree to track the flame's whereabouts, as well as monitor the status of the cult. The both shared a glance of approval before Wraith swinged away with her whip.
