We are the Cult of the Tree! We watch in the night!
~ Ilmo Koskela presenting the cult to Agent Nightingale while killing him in the ritual.

The Cult of the Tree are the secondary antagonists in the 2023 survival horror videogame Alan Wake II, the third installment of the Alan Wake franchise.

It is a mysterious and sinister cult, led by the Koskela brothers, who intend to protect the town of Bright Falls from the threats of the Dark Presence through fear and ritual murders, killing only the people who emerged from Cauldron Lake before becoming taken, just as they did with former FBI agent Robert Nightingale, and they even planned to kill the writer Alan Wake after his return to the real world for being the "cause" of the supernatural events.

History[]

Past[]

The cult of the Tree was created in 2013 by the Koskela brothers as a means to protect the people of Bright Falls after the Torchbearers disbanded long ago, leaving no one to protect the community. Whenever the cult found some people emerging from Cauldron Lake, which they knew contained the Dark Presence, they would have to kill them before they became a Taken. The ritual involved tying up the hostage, cutting open their chest, removing their heart, and using the Clicker to fill their body with light, similar to what writer Alan Wake did to banish the Dark Presence within Barbara Jagger's body.

In the woods of Bright Falls, Watery, and around Cauldron Lake, the Cult would hang tree-shaped stick ornaments as a way to scare anyone walking through them at night, so that they would turn and run to safety instead of walking through the woods where it was unsafe. When the Federal Bureau of Control set up a monitoring station at Cauldron Lake, the Koskela brothers deliberately manipulated it so that the cult would be informed of the lake's activity rather than the Agency.

They also prepared for Alan Wake's return, as due to his disappearance in 2010, there were manuscript pages floating up from the lake, as well as more Taken, which they regarded as being responsible for "helping" the Dark Presence. Although the group's purpose is to prevent people from becoming Taken, sometimes their own cult members unexpectedly become them.

Over the years they have both succeeded and failed in their attempt to recruit numerous townspeople, with Ilmo Koskela pressuring Vladimir Blum to try and recruit the Anderson Brothers, but to no avail.

Alan Wake II[]

In September 2023, following the return of FBI Agent Robert Nightingale from the shores of Cauldron Lake, the Cult was waiting for him at the place to catch him and kill him by tying him to a table behind the store to extract his heart and use the Clicker to eliminate the Dark Presence that inhabited him, but halfway through their ritual they were interrupted by some tourists, causing them to leave and scare them away as they left the area.

Over the years, the cult has carried out this series of ritualistic murders in the Bright Falls area against anyone who leaves Cauldron Lake, which has attracted several government authorities. Some members, including Mulligan and Thornton, would also be possessed by the Dark Presence and Saga would have to finish them off. The next day, FBI agents Saga Anderson and Alex Casey were tasked with investigating Nightingale's case.

The Cult, tired of the FBI, remained silent until they learned that Alan Wake escaped from Cauldron Lake, and so they went to Elderwood Palace Lodge, where he was being held for interrogation, in order to kill him. However, many of the cultists were killed by Scratch, and when they were finally able to track Alan down, they were prevented from killing him by Saga, and many of the remaining cult members were arrested. The captured Alan was later revealed to be possessed by Scratch, who killed Jaakko after the latter taunted him.
