“ | The ol' "mistaken for a grotesque lifeless being." Works every time. Welcome to my Museum of Oddities. I go by many names, but you can call me "The Curator." | „ |
~ Ponds' introduction. |
“ | That's the stuff. Now, since you're my main attraction, I'm gonna let you in on this museum's biggest secret. You see, truth is nothing's fake. Everything here is real. Real and frozen in wax. Just like YOU! | „ |
~ Ponds revealing the truth about his attractions to Anne. |
“ | Stay back, you filthy animals! You'll never catch me. You definitely caught me. Wait, wait! Hear me out! I'll cut you all in on the profits. 10%. Okay, 11%. 11.5%! I'm not coming to 12. So you might as well just... (screams) (The door shuts and a red liquid comes out) Calm down, everyone. It’s just wax. | „ |
~ Ponds' last words before getting dragged by creatures he captured and waxed. |
Curator Ponds is the main antagonist of the Amphibia episode "Wax Museum". He is the resident of Amphibian town of Stony Gulch and the owner and curator of the town's Curiosity Shack. However, it is revealed that he is an extravagant psychopath, who captures weird animals and traps them in wax, to be the Shack's attractions.
He was voiced by Alex Hirsch, who also voiced Grunkle Stan, Bill Cipher, Old Man McGucket, Jeff, and Dippy Fresh in Gravity Falls.
Appearance[]
Curator Ponds is an old light orange frog with large yellow eyes and thick gray eyebrows. He wears a black suit over a white shirt with a red bow the same color as his brown fez with amphibian emblem. He carries an eight-ball stick and wears an unnecessary black eye patch over one of his eyes.
Personality[]
Like the character he resembles, Stan Pines, Curator Pines is sly and greedy, as he has a taste for money and a temperament that he likes to show off. Unlike his counterpart, the Curator has a mean side and is willing to hurt and imprison others for his own benefit.
Despite this, he is genuinely nice to a slight degree as when Anne Boonchuy calls herself stupid for falling for his trap, he lightens her mood up by persuading her to not call herself stupid and tells her she's just a bright girl who's only having a simple bad day. This could hint that he has some standards against negative self-talk even to those he captures.
Biography[]
Curator Ponds first appeared in "Wax Museum" as the curator and owner of the Curiosity Hut. He gave Anne and the Plantars a tour of his museum showing them wax figures of many mysterious creatures across Amphibia. During the tour, Anne spots a CD player and makes a deal with the Curator to be an exhibit in his museum for one day in exchange for the CD player. However, Hop Pop bans Anne from going back to the museum, so Anne sneaks out at night.
When she returns to the museum, the curator asks her to stand at a stage marked with an "X". The Curator then reveals his plan to trap Anne in wax and place her on display with the other wax figures, which were actually real creatures he froze with wax. However, the Plantars go to the museum to rescue her where they fight off The Curator. Sprig and Polly manage to free all the wax creatures with fire.
In the end, the Plantars save Anne and The Curator gets dragged away by his former captives to a dark closet, and he is stated to have been killed, although after being dragged a red liquid was spilled on the floor that the Curator proclaimed that it was just wax.

Trivia[]
- Mr. Ponds serves as a homage to the character Stanley Pines from the Disney Channel series Gravity Falls. He resembles Stan in appearance and attire, as well as sharing occupation and voice actor, to the point where he could be considered Amphibia's counterpart of the character.
- His last name "Ponds" is an allusion to the surname "Pines".
- He also says "I'm not going back to frog prison" when attacking Sprig, which is what Stan said in an episode of Gravity Falls.
- He could serve as a dark mirror for Stan, resembling what he would be like if he didn't have his redeeming qualities.
- He isn't the only character from Gravity Falls to have a counterpart in Amphibia. A counterpart of Soos Ramirez is seen briefly (breaking the fourth wall by alluding to "Multiple parallel realities" that they "exist simultaneously in'. The writers have also confirmed that there are counterparts of Dipper and Mabel, who were simply not there when the episode took place.
- The episode has many other Gravity Falls references with this character as well.
- The "Curiosity Hut" is based on the Mystery Shack, even down to having Bill Cipher imagery.
- The "living wax figures" concept and Polly melting them reference the plot of the Gravity Falls episode "Headhunters".
- One of the wax creatures, the "Fromes", serve as the Amphibia version of the Gnomes.
- One of the Fromes says "Shmebulock" as he's freed, a reference to the Gnome of the same name in the series.
- The CD player he found belonged to Dr. Frakes.
- Mr. Ponds' scheme to capture odd creatures and freeze them in wax is seemingly inspired by Ivan Igor from Mystery of the Wax Museum.
- The voice actors of Dipper and Mabel both voiced two characters that appeared in episodes after the one where the Curator appeared.
- Curator Ponds is one of the 3 antagonists from Amphibia other than most of the Frobots and the Leviathan Family (except King Andrias) to die, along with the Core and Veggierobo.
