Cursed Spirits, or simply referred as Curses, are the main antagonists of the manga and anime series Jujutsu Kaisen. They are unseen supernatural entitites born from human negative emotions, which can generally only be visible to jujutsu sorcerers as a whole.
Origin and History[]
It can be assumed that cursed spirits have been at least since the existence of humanity as they were given birth from human emotions themself. It can go date back as early as in the Heian Era, also known as the Golden Age of Jujutsu. Sukuna, infamously nicknamed as the King of the Curse, was the most infamous of all cursed spirit that has impacted the jujutsu society since then so much that not even his remaining twenty fingers could be destroyed. In present days, jujutsu sorcerer organizations have been founded to hunt down cursed spirits for humanity's sake. Due to being invisible to the naked eye from the rest of the average human population, their existence are generally a secret.
Following the downfall of the solid friendship of two of the strongest sorcerers, Geto Suguru and Satoru Gojo, Geto developed a strong hatred for non-sorcerers. Geto organized an infamous terrorist incident in 2017 known as the year of the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, where he unleashed countless cursed spirits to start invading Kyoto and Shinjuku. Since then, there has been a notable increase in curse-related incidents, marked by heightened danger. Events such as Sukuna's rebirth and the birth of emergence of over four new special-grade cursed spirits known as the Disaster Curses, contributed to a more perilous environment.
Appearances[]
Cursed spirits come in almost any imagined appearance. It can be large, tiny, humanoid, animal-like, and even some almost resembling something exactly like an average human, such as in Mahito's case, presumably due to being mainly born from human emotions. However, due to being made of utterly cursed energy, ordinary humans or non-sorcerers are completely invisible to them. Regardless, some have said they can feel them touching them, such as in the case of a young woman with whom Kento Nanami interacted and had a small curse on her shoulder. She could no longer feel the spirit when Nanami slaughtered the curse on her shoulder. Due to their ressemblances, jujutsu sorcerers like Yuji Itadori and Kento Nanami easily misidentified transfigured humans with cursed spirits. It was only confirmed by Shoko Ieiri that the victims Yuji and Nanami fought were originally humans and that they had their soul shapeshifted, causing them to transform into transfigured humans once she examined the biology of the subject's body.
Behaviours[]
Average cursed spirits are seen wandering around in cities and towns without much intention of harming humans due to not having much of human negative emotions in them. However, when they do, cursed spirits immediately become hostile by killing humans or simply taking them as hostages.
One can easily attract a cursed spirit by opening a cursed object as dangerous as one of Sukuna's fingers as showcased at the start of the series with Yuji's classmates attacked by a giant curse. Megumi explained that cursed spirits are seeking for objects of such type to consume them to gain more cursed energy, making them more powerful. It also appears that the more powerful the cursed object is, the more dangerous and larger the cursed spirit it attract will be.
Occasionally, some curses can also cause humans to experience peculiar symptoms, initially unaware of the cursed spirit causing them. Non-sorcerers facing life-threatening situations due to a curse may, in such dire circumstances, gain sight of the curse that poses a threat to their lives.
Average cursed spirits have basically no form of intelligence, thus most are incapable of speeches with the exception of the Disaster Curses; Mahito, Hanami, Jogo, and Dagon. Although unable to talk, a rare one displayed some level of cunningness when it held a human child hostage to deal with Nobara Kugisaki.

Classification[]
- Vengeful Cursed Spirit ( Ka Ju-Onryō ) - Cursed spirits emerge when deceased individuals are afflicted with a curse upon death, leading to the potential corruption of their spirits into vengeful entities. Sorcerers face an elevated risk of becoming curses postmortem, but this can be averted by employing jujutsu in their demise. Rika Orimoto underwent transformation into a vengeful curse when Yuta Okkotsu, grappling with her death, unintentionally cursed her. Michizane Sugawara, Yuta's ancestor, joined the ranks of the Big Three Vengeful Spirits, forebears of the Big Three Sorcerer Families.
- Imaginary Vengeful Cursed Spirit ( Kasō Ju-Onryō ) - A manifestation of collective fear, the Imaginary Vengeful Spirit arises from the shared dread of the masses. When numerous individuals collectively envision fearful entities like renowned yokai or ghost tales (e.g., the Nine-Tailed Fox), these spirits come into existence. Sorcerers, recognizing their distinct nature, classify them separately from other curses. Sukuna, once a human over a millennium ago, gained notoriety through the legend of the Imaginary Demon God, depicted with two faces and four arms. The curse manipulator, Suguru Geto, harnessed two distinct Imaginary Vengeful Spirits: Kuchisake-Onna, a well-known urban yokai, and Tamamo-no-Mae Incarnate, another character from Japanese mythology.
- Disease Cursed Spirit ( Shippei Jurei ) - A constant source of curses from humanity, the concepts of plague and general sickness give rise to potent disease curses. This category of cursed spirits employs cursed techniques to afflict humans with the corresponding diseases, leading to curses and fatalities. Pseudo-Geto wielded a unique-grade disease curse, the Smallpox Deity, capable of utilizing Domain Expansion. This involved conditions that ensnared the target within a coffin, placed them beneath a gravestone, and initiated smallpox infection following a three-second countdown.
Cursed Spirit Grade[]
- Unregistered special grade - After Sukuna's reincarnation in 2018, a surge of unregistered special grade cursed spirits emerged. The inaugural manifestation was a Finger Bearer originating from a Cursed Womb generated by one of Sukuna's fingers. Satoru Gojo's attention was first drawn during an encounter with Jogo, who initiated an attack. Subsequent to their clash, another unregistered special grade, Hanami, joined forces with Jogo, revealing a noteworthy level of intellect and collaborative proficiency. This coalition, inclusive of Mahito and Dagon, congealed into a faction strategically opposing sorcerers.
- Grade 2 - Amidst the spectrum of cursed spirits, those designated as Semi-Grade 2 or beyond exhibit a substantial reservoir of cursed energy. Their eradication necessitates the expertise of seasoned sorcerers operating at an elevated grade, owing to the heightened intelligence characteristic of some entities within this classification.
- Semi Grade 1 - Amidst critical junctures, Semi-Grade 1 curses emerge as pivotal markers of peril due to their adept utilization of cursed techniques and attacks infused with cursed energy. The process of exorcism becomes notably hazardous given their proficiency. Yuta and Toge faced an assault from Suguru's Semi-Grade 1 curse, with Yuta acknowledging its heightened fright factor compared to a prior encounter with a colossal entity. Principal Gakuganji also endeavored to employ a Semi-Grade 1 curse in an attempt to eliminate Yuji. Generally, cursed spirits demonstrating communicative abilities are automatically categorized at the lowest echelon of Semi-Grade 1. Entities of this rank or above are susceptible to having their techniques extracted and manipulated through Cursed Spirit Manipulation.
- Special Grade - At the zenith of cursed spirits' threat level are entities endowed with intelligence rivaling or surpassing that of humans, proficient in employing cursed techniques. Within the jujutsu realm, those surpassing Grade 1 garner the Special Grade classification, yet their combat capabilities span a diverse spectrum. Only a sorcerer of Special Grade status or, at the very minimum, Grade 1 proficiency, possesses the requisite capacity to exorcise a Special Grade cursed spirit. The year 2017 witnessed the confirmation of 16 registered cursed spirits, notably comprising Imaginary Vengeful Spirits, instilling fear among sorcerers. Additional Vengeful Spirits like Rika and Tamomo-no-Mae also attained special grade recognition.
