Curtis Miller is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders episode "Iquiniso". Miller is a serial killer targeting the members of South African Apartheid terrorist group Pretorius, a trio using the murder of his sister as an excuse to murder Black South Africans, when in truth they violently killed her as well to try and fabricate a precursor. Miller decided to kill the group's families to try and wreak his own vengeance through violence in hopes they suffer with loss like he had.
He was portrayed by the late South African actor Cliff Simon, who also portrayed Ba'al in Stargate SG1 and Stargate: Continuum.
Biography[]
Early Life and Crimes[]
Little is known about Miller, except he served in the South African National Defense Force. His sister Sara served in the Johannesburg Metro PD as a constable, until her extremely violent murder while she worked in the Azaria District that only fueled Apartheid warfare. Her killing was revealed to be a false flag, as the Pretorius group, consisting of Office of State Security operatives, tried to blame black South Africans by staging her like an umkovu, stabbing her brain with an ice pick, wrapping her in clay, ripping through her body with a rake, and bisecting her tongue. An anti-apartheid activist, David Lubbe, was framed and imprisoned for the crime, until he was murdered in custody. Miller was most destroyed by his sister's murder, to the point his mental health decline resulted in his discharge. He followed the entirety of Lubbe's trial. The Pretorius trio tortured and murdered fourteen activists with their fabricated pretense, until the Truth and Reconciliation Committee granted the operatives full immunity of their identified crimes once Apartheid was abolished, and all three married and had children. In 2015, when one of the group, Rowan Bosch, was dying of cancer, he went to Miller and presented evidence of his crimes in a confession, pleading for forgiveness. Extending further than instead being enraged by the revelations, believing the members were protected for life and wouldn't be tried for Sara's murder, miller enacted a rampage on the operatives, decided to start by targeting their children so they'd understand the pain of losing a loved one. Miller lobotomized Bosch and held him captive for later, then butchered Bosch's daughter Lara in the same fashion as Sara was.
"Iquiniso"[]
Miller then targeted Armand Smit's sons Timothy and Brandon, just as they were leaving the restaurant they were working at while visiting. Miller killed Timothy and, while wearing a skull mask, took Brandon back to his family home, chanting in either Zulu or Swahili, and tortured Brandon by cutting him with a rake and electrocuting him. Brandon went from trying to escape to daring Miller to murder him, but Miller said he'd leave Brandon the only witness before torturing him again. Miller later killed Bosch's son from an affair, Kurt Adams, leaving him in the Azaria district like the rest of the group's children he murdered, but this time in gang territory, which diverted suspicion from him. The IRT, assisted by local police and former colleague of Agent Jack Garrett, Lieutenant Ananda Doshi, they go through Pretorius' history and realize the murders are copying Sara's killing. it's Monty who provides the accurate suggestion Pretorius killed her too for the excuse of their crimes, so profiling Sara's family leads to Miller. Hos home is raided, and Brandon's rescued. Who seems to be Miller is seated in a chair with the mask and a revolver, but removing the mask reveals Bosch, as he was lobotomized and posed for the police to be at risk of shooting him. Miller, by this point, broke into the house of Noah Coetzee, who's with his pregnant daughter Lydia. Miller snarls the inquiry of if Coetzee remembers Sara, and Coetzee tries to deny his crimes. When Miller stabs Coetzee with the rake, Miller says he knows everything from Bosch. When Coetzee pleads for a bargain, Miller simply says he'll watch his daughter and her child die. Throwing Coetzee into the living room and holding a knife to Lydia's womb, he makes Miller confess in front of his daughter. As Monty already got Coetzee's name from Smit's wife, the IRT and Met PD arrive. When miller doesn't believe they're going to punish the group, Agent Matthew Simmons jumps Miller to subdue him. In the struggle, Miller's knife pierces his own stomach, and he dies from blood loss. Smit and Coetzee, however, are arrested because their deal isn't provided for Sara's murder, finding providing her justice.
