Henry "Hank" Henshaw, later known as Cyborg Superman, is a major antagonist in the DC Universe, both the Superman and Green Lantern franchises and media. He is a former astronaut who managed to electronically upload his consciousness following a tragic accident that killed him and his crew. Blaming Superman for the accident, he would become obsessed with killing the Man of Steel and destroying his reputation, using Kryptonian technology to create a new body identical to Superman's for this purpose.
Although he has frequently changed and upgraded his appearance over the years. He would later become a major adversary of the Green Lantern Corps, notably being responsible for the destruction of Hal Jordan's home, Coast City, which would result in him being possessed by Parallax.
In the New 52 continuity, the identity of Cyborg Superman is instead taken by Zor-El, Supergirl's father and Superman's paternal uncle, who was assimilated into a cybernetic minion by Brainiac following Krypton's destruction. After breaking free from Brainiac's control, he would attempt to recreate the populace of Argo City by draining human life force, only to be stopped by his daughter and ultimately killed by Mister Oz. Hank Henshaw returns and takes on the cyborg-Superman mantle once again.
Biography[]
Modern Age[]
Hank Henshaw was a NASA astronaut who found himself bombarded with cosmic radiation alongside his wife Terri and two other crew members of the LexCorp shuttle Excalibur. Returning to Earth, the two crew members had their bodies destroyed, but was able to reconstruct their bodies into new forms. Initially thought to have been unaffected by the radiation, Hank and Terri found that was not the case as Hank began decaying as Terri started to phase out of reality.
With Superman's help, Terri was saved, but Hank and the other members were not so lucky - one became unhinged and flew into the sun, another killed himself via MRI machine, and Henshaw himself disintegrated. Or so he thought - his mutation allowed him to control machinery, creating a robotic body for himself. However, this was the last straw for Terri, who went insane by the events. Even more, Henshaw's new powers were causing havoc to Earth's telecommunications. Discovering Superman's Birthing Matrix, he fashioned himself a rocket ship and disappeared for parts unknown.
Henshaw's travels through space damaged his mind thanks to the solitude, warping his reasoning to thinking that Superman exiled him because he feared his powers. Seeking revenge, his travels lead to him a backwater world lead by Mongul, who had taken over the world after Superman ousted him from Warworld. Henshaw violently convinced Mongul to join him and they both planned to take revenge on Superman. However, by the time Henshaw returned, his revenge would be ground to a halt - Superman had died in combat against the beast Doomsday. Henshaw modified his plans - if he couldn't kill Superman, he'll destroy his reputation.
Taking up a cyborg design of Superman, he made his first appearance, arriving at the marker where Superman died and vaporized it in front of a family. After arriving at STAR Labs, he made his way to Project Cadmus, taking custody of Doomsday's body, sealing him on an asteroid, planting a device on him, then launching him through space.
Confronting Lois Lane and Professor Emil Hamilton, he was able to convince them that he just may be indeed the real thing. His next action was saving President Bill Clinton from a terrorist attack, gaining legitimacy. Soon, a mysterious alien craft arrived on Earth, heading for Coast City.
The Eradicator, already there, confronted the ship when the Cyborg Superman arrived. Callously, Henshaw assaulted the Eradicator and left him for dead as the alien ship obliterated Coast City. As a strange new city took form there, Henshaw rejoined up with Mongul on board the ship briefly before continuing his deception.
His next target was the young clone Superboy. However, at a news conference, Lois heard him mentioning having powers as a young boy, which tipped her off that the Cyborg was a fraud. While investigating the damage caused by Coast City's destruction, Henshaw attacked Superboy, knocking him out and imprisoning him.
He soon convinced members of the Justice League America that the Eradicator was the culprit and that he and the alien ship had left Earth, leaving Earth defenseless as he plotted to turn Metropolis into a second "Engine City". Learning of what's going on, Superboy was able to free himself and race back to Metropolis just in time to bear witness to the return of the original Superman. Together with Superboy, the Matrix Supergirl, and new hero Steel, Superman lead the assault against Engine City despite being powerless.
Upon arriving, Superboy was able to stop a missile from destroying Metropolis, preventing the creation of a second Engine City. Catching the fact that Mongul had double-crossed him, Henshaw manipulated Steel into shutting down Engine City before it ripped the Earth apart. With Mongul down for the count by Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Henshaw made his move, attacking Superman and goading him into following him deeper. Joined by the revived Eradicator, Superman battled Henshaw and, in desperation, Henshaw ripped the gas line to the City's Kryptonite core and tried to kill Superman that way.
However, the Eradicator threw himself in front of it, changing its energies to restore Superman to full. Re-powered, Superman destroyed Henshaw by vibrating his arm fast enough to shatter his body. That wasn't the end of Henshaw, though - he had survived through the device on Doomsday's body, holding a copy of his essence. When Doomsday arrived on Apokolips, Henshaw took command of a fallen Apokolipian soldier and altered him. With Darkseid incapacitated by Doomsday made a bit to take control of the planet, forcing Superman to stop him. Darkseid soon recovered and put a stop to the cyborg's rampage, using his Omega Beams to trap him in an orb.
Later, when Superman returned to the planet looking for answers over a mysterious body in his tomb, Darkseid released Henshaw, deeming that Superman's debt for saving his life is paid. Henshaw, then, allied himself with an intergalactic "tribunal" seeking to bring Superman to trial over the crimes of his ancestors, namely Kem-L, creator of the Eradicator. Henshaw aided in getting Superman but was later tried himself for the crimes of genocide and cast into a black hole.
The black hole deposited him into the Marvel Universe. Unfettered by the heroes of his old world, he destroyed a planet to remake Warworld, only to gain the attention of not only the Silver Surfer, but also the Mad Titan Thanos and Parallax, who was busy hunting down the Cyborg.
The Cyborg would escape back to his native universe, but Parallax would follow, catching up to him and ultimately trapping him in an energy source known as the Godwave, where he would be stuck until Superman, having been changed to his electric blue form at this point, arrived here to investigate why the metahumans of the universe were suffering power fluctuations.
New 52[]
Henshaw seemingly vanished during the realty-altering Flashpoint event, but reappeared when Convergence uncovered countless alternate realities set to war by the almighty being Telos on behalf of a trans-universal composite of Brainiacs. Restored on Prime Earth, Henshaw assembled a cadre of powerful villains into an Anti-Superman Gang, only to again meet defeat due to dissent in its ranks and the combined power of the Man of Steel and his allies. In DC Rebirth, Hank returns as Cyborg-Superman again.
Other Versions[]
Zor-El[]
After Flashpoint, Superman's uncle Zor-El, escaped Krypton’s destruction, thanks to Collector of Worlds Brainiac. Subjected to cybernetic augmentations that deranged his personality, Zor-El became Cyborg Superman; Brainiac's scout for a stronger species in the universe. He attempted to conquer Earth, battling Superman and his own daughter Kara Zor-El, but somehow escaped the black hole doom that befell Brainiac. Also surviving the DC Rebirth event, Cyborg Superman reanimated the dead Krytponians of Argo City and again attacked Earth, only to be defeated by Supergirl and Superman.

Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Cyber Mind: At his core, Henshaw is an energy being, making it extremely difficult to permanently destroy him, as he can transfer his electronic consciousness into any nearby machine. The maximum distance range of this transfer is unknown.
- Technopathy: Cyborg-Superman is a technopath; a psychic with the ability to perceive, receive, transmit and interface with technological objects such as electronic machines, signals and hardware, as well as to communicate with computerized data, and to manipulate all kinds of technology without the need for physical interaction with technology and machines using only the psychic power of his mind ; he can perceive, receive, transmit, communicate and interface with technology, as well as exert psychokinetic-type control over technological constructs, such as computers, robots, hardware, and other functional devices that can be described as "technology". Telepaths are able to read other people's thoughts at will, detect the presence of other minds by extrasensory means, and even control the minds of living beings. However, in the case of technopaths, "living beings" are replaced by machines and technology, enabling Henshaw to "hear" what a machine "thinks" and see what it is capable of seeing, thus establishing a direct line of communication with the machine. Cyborg-Superman is capable of controlling the flow of complex machines, assembling or disassembling their programming at will and operating most technologies remotely, controlling specific electronic components and telling them what to engage or disengage, and may be able to use electrical impulses to smoothly control smaller metal parts. Unlike normal technology manipulation, which can be achieved through a variety of means such as telekinesis, reality warping, technology-based magic and even, in some cases, electromagnetic powers, technopathy can only be achieved through the psychic power of the mind and is also capable of manipulating technology in a similar way to technokinetics, particularly in Cyborg-Superman. Nor can technopaths be compared to powers such as technological telepathy, which requires a machine to give its user normal telepathic powers, or cyberpathy, which allows Henshaw to communicate and understand only the inner workings of technology, such as Internet/cyberspace data, acting as a lesser version of technopathy and an underpower in Henshaw
- Technoformation: Unlike most technopaths, Henshaw does not just command electronics and adjacent power sources, he incorporates them into himself energy and all. Any nearby machinery becomes an extension of his conscious self. He can take any apparatus and, once it is a part of him, transform it into anything his mind can imagine, and thanks to time spent traveling across many universes, he can imagine a lot. Among other abilities, Henshaw can animate the energies powering them, combining both aspects to construct any technological device, control any energized system (during Reign of the Superman, the Cyborg briefly "possessed" Steel's armor and used Kryptonite radiation as a weapon) and change the shape of the technological components of his or the "bodies" of other cybernetic beings (most frequently changing one or both of his hands into various energy weapons such as energy cannons, ion cannons, and sometimes melee weapons).
- Techno-Organic-Kryptonian Physiology: Thanks to his interactions with Superman's birthing matrix, the Cyborg possesses knowledge of both Superman's Kryptonian genetic code and Kryptonian technology. This information allows Henshaw to construct bodies with organic portions that are genetically identical to Superman and mechanical components built from Kryptonian alloys. Using Superman's genetic code gives the Cyborg access to all of Superman's powers, including Super Strength, Speed, Invulnerability and plenty others.
- Solar Empowerment: Cyborg-Superman becomes stronger, faster, more durable, etc. when he comes into contact with sunlight, which can unlock affinity-related abilities and enhance existing powers. He is also able to draw sustenance from the sun, even slowing or halting his aging process.
- Cybernetic Immortality: Thanks to his cybernetic enhancements, Cyborg-Superman has become virtually immortal and doesn't age at all, living forever thanks to the sun's yellow rays.
- Self-Sustenance: Cyborg-Superman's physical needs are completely suppressed. These needs include air/breathing, sleep/rest, food, drink, bodily evacuation, shelter from the effects of the environment and their absence (heat/cold, drought/humidity), and so on. It is also capable of remaining motionless without the normal effects that this entails.
- Solar Empowerment: Cyborg-Superman becomes stronger, faster, more durable, etc. when he comes into contact with sunlight, which can unlock affinity-related abilities and enhance existing powers. He is also able to draw sustenance from the sun, even slowing or halting his aging process.
- Invulnerability: Thanks to his cybernetic body and Krytonian physiology, Cyborg-Superman is immune to most physical harm and trauma, due to the supernatural density of his cellular and anatomical structure, as well as his bio-electric glowing aura. This makes him virtually indestructible to all kinds of ammunition, whether anti-tank or anti-aircraft, as well as to all kinds of explosions or deflagrations, and brute force. In addition to his immunity to explosions, Cyborg-Superman is immune to fire, no matter how intense the heat, his skin and musculoskeletal structure being virtually fireproof. In addition, thanks to his cybernetic body, Cyborg-Superman is immune to all kinds of ionizing radiation, such as ultraviolet, X and gamma rays, his body being virtually insensitive to them.
- Supernatural Strength: The exact limits of the Cyborg-Superman's Strength is unclear, but he has been shown as capable of being far stronger than Mongul, and been known to match strengths with Superman. Which means: Cyborg-Superman can lift and move continents, mega structures, planets, moons, low- to high-mass stars and planetary systems of considerable weight. Henshaw's lifting abilities enable him to move stars from the main sequence to massive super giants. His striking capabilities enable him to destroy several astronomical bodies and severely damage a dwarf or standard galaxy. Cyborg can lift and move hundreds of billions of pounds, even entire continents, and perform any action with energy equivalent to that of a hydrogen bomb or tectonic plate. Cyborg-Superman can lift mountains, massive alien aircraft, artifacts, thousands of Hyperion-like trees or minor dwarf planets. Hank can perform any action likely to divide continents and create canyons, mountains or kilometer-high craters on Earth.
- Supernatural Endurance: Cyborg-Superman has the ability to continuously perform physical actions during several decades of interstellar travel when fighting Hal Jordan & Superman, his body produces little to no fatigue toxins, he doesn't need to rest or take a break at any time, not even during battle. He's able to travel all over the universe without being exhausted and remaining physically very athletic and sporty without needing a break, having fought Superman numerous times without showing any obvious signs of fatigue or exhaustion.
- Overexertion Immunity: Cyborg-Superman is resistant/immune to the effects of physical, mental and spiritual overwork, be it bodily tension, stress, pain or simply fatigue. This enables him to push his body, exceed his limits and go further with his abilities without suffering the consequences, pushing himself physically, mentally, using his power, etc.
- Supernatural Speed: Cyborg-Superman have the ability to move far beyond what is naturally possible for the vast majority of supermen. Due to the wide range of speed levels in this category, the speed he can reach varies between: sonic, supersonic, hypersonic, light speed and infinitely more.
- Supernatural Breath: Cyborg-Superman is able to generate and manipulate the various effects it contains in such a way as to shape their exhalation. These shapes can be gusts, jets, spheres and even a fog that comes out of the mouth. Thanks to this, Cyborg-Superman can create hurricanes that cause enormous damage. The strength of the hurricane depends on Henshaw's power and skills, as well as environmental factors. He can also condense cold to generate and manipulate ice/cold within himself, allowing him to shape the exhalation of the effect. These forms can include flurries, jets, spheres, and even a fog that emerges from the mouth.
- Supernatural Senses: Cyborg-Superman's senses of sight, taste, hearing, touch and smell are clearly, obviously and supernaturally sharper than those of other supermen. He can see thousands of kilometers with immense resolution and see/track things too fast for the natural eye, hear perfectly through dense walls and listen to the slightest vibration/noise from extremely distant places, even in deep space, smell anything over great distances down to individual molecules/atoms, taste the tiniest details to the point of distinguishing them on a molecular level, and sense the slightest vibration in air, soil and water.
- Supernatural Vision: Cyborg-Superman has a sense of sight that is clearly more acute than that of the other beings in his universe, because his abilities are pushed to a superhuman level. This means he can see for miles, in all directions at once, in the dark, see the faintest distinctions and track things too fast for the normal eye. And essentially to infinity, being able to see distant alien worlds.
- Telescopic Vision: Cyborg-Superman can zoom their vision in on things, allowing them to see distant objects in magnified scale. He is able to see vast distances, outside the atmosphere, solar-system or even galactic distances, as well as foreign worlds. He is able to see items that are normally too small to be seen with the naked eye at normal clarity.
- Electromagnetic Vision: Cyborg-Superman can perceive the world around him based solely on magnetic and electrical energy patterns. He may even be able to see the natural magnetic auras that surround living beings. He can see almost the entire electromagnetic spectrum, and can "tune" his vision to interpret different energy ranges. He can see Radio Waves (which include AM, FM and TV Frequencies), Radar, Infrared, Visible Light, Ultraviolet, X-rays and Gamma rays. It also features Night Vision and Thermovision. Henshaw can also see the energy flowing through power lines and technological objects (he can tell whether they are active or not). It can determine whether a radio transmitter is on and sending signals.
- X-Ray Vision: As with other Kryptonians, Hank Henshaw possesses X-Ray vision, High-Energy electromagnetic waves of very short wavelength, capable of penetrating many materials that are opaque to light. He can thus see through most of the materials around him, such as walls, ceilings, floors, etc... It also seems capable of generating X-Rays, which it uses to see through walls.
- Supernatural Hearing: Cyborg-Superman's sense of hearing is significantly sharper than other superhumans', thanks to his cybernetic enhancements. This enables him to hear anything over incredible distances, to hear things that are apparently too silent to be discerned, and to hear sounds over an insane range of frequencies. He can hear individual molecules/atoms and their movements, as well as the supernatural/paranormal, including the activities of spirits or immaterial beings and creatures. This also enables him to acquire auditory information about the future or the past.
- Heat Vision: Cyborg-Superman is able to generate concentrated, immense amount of heat from their eyes, which can be used to burn, heat, melt, weld, etc., targets. Which his great mastery of this power, he may turn it into/gain Incineration, which is a very similar power. The user can release/use heat to attacks of various shapes and/or intensities, either projected, used as a part of melee attacks, etc. Cyborg-Superman can release massive amounts of heat in all directions at once, and on almost unlimited scales. This power allows him to eliminate many enemies at once, and destroy vast areas such as large cities or millions of people. Finally, Henshaw can emit/project energy in a variety of shapes and forms, such as waves, blasts, auras, etc.
- High-Speed Flight: Hank Henshaw can fly at very high speeds, such as supersonic, hypersonic, the speed of light or even faster than the speed of light. He can manipulate graviton particles to defy the forces of gravity and achieve flight. This ranges from hovering to moving in any position, in any direction. He is also unaffected by the various effects of rapid acceleration, including air resistance, inability to breathe, dynamic shock resulting from contact with high-speed objects, etc. Cyborg-Superman is also able to survive and adapt to extremely high or low atmospheric pressure (without becoming disoriented or deprived of normal breathing capacity), as well as to high wind friction; this is accompanied by an innate immunity to vertigo and/or fear of heights. Cyborg-Superman can survive and adapt to the vacuum of space unaided, and are able to withstand atmospheres (intense heat and toxic chemical elements), cosmic environments (radiation), strange gravity (sometimes even that of a black hole) and lack of air.
- Panmesia: Hank Henshaw can remember everything he has ever experienced, met or learned. Henshaw only needs to read, hear, see or experience something once to never forget it. What's more, he can instantly recall any stored information with perfect clarity, effortlessly and without strain. His mind has unlimited storage capacity, he can continue to learn for the rest of his life, and his brain will be able to hold everything without problem, enabling him to remember every event, experience or piece of knowledge from birth to the present day. His mind is also completely immune to manipulation, unless the ability is first canceled or stolen.
- Weather Immunity: Cyborg-Superman is totally immune to weather conditions, including wind, rain, temperature, electricity, fog and so on. His senses, movements and actions are in no way affected by the weather. Cyborg-Superman is immune to all elements and elemental forces, being totally invulnerable to direct and indirect effects. It allows Henshaw to live in conditions where the climate is generally cold, as he possesses an adapted respiratory capacity, as well as a high tolerance (even immunity) to cold, his lungs are also able to acclimatize and breathe in/on any gaseous environment, whether hostile or deficient. As a cyborg, he can adapt to cyberspace and virtual environments. What's more, thanks to his millennia of interstellar travel, he's able to adapt to total silence and function perfectly. And because it is powered by the sun's yellow rays, Henshaw can survive extreme temperatures such as intense heat.
Abilities[]
- Supernatural Intelligence: Hank Henshaw was already highly intelligent long before he turned into Cyborg-Superman, as he was a high-ranking astronaut capable of coming up with a plan for any situation, not without limits, but when he transformed into Cyborg-Superman, Henshaw managed to use Superman's Birth Matrix to create a whole new body for himself to be as strong as Superman. He also managed to gain the trust of several extremely powerful villains, such as the Red Lantern Corps, the Qwardian Lantern Corps, The Sinestro Corps, etc... These provided him with their respective lantern rings, making him even stronger than before; thanks to these rings, he once managed to beat Superman.
- Martial Arts Mastery: Thanks to his training, Hank Henshaw is a master of all martial arts. He is able to perfectly execute all types of martial arts, past and present, with great ease. Henshaw also has an intuitive mastery of associated martial skills, techniques, body language and word choice, subtly sending all signals to others, giving him a major advantage in any martial situation. Hnak can use every type of martial art that exists, has existed and ever will exist perfectly and without the slightest flaw or error, whenever he want, with no effort on his part and in very little time. Cyborg-Superman can use martial arts so perfectly that he instantly hooks everyone who sees him, and everyone who sees him instantly thinks he's the ultimate martial artist. Every martial art he uses is objectively and unanimously perfect in every aspect and detail. Every martial art he uses will be an immediate and unrivalled success in every field. This is the ultimate martial arts mechanism, making it virtually impossible for the user to be defeated, as he will automatically fight with perfect skill, technique and timing. Cyborg-Superman's complete mastery of martial arts and everything related to them makes him the ultimate martial artist. It also enables him to dominate any martial arts-based competition, at any level, at any time and in any field.
- Omnilingualism: Thanks to his years and centuries he spent travelling around several worlds, Cyborg-Superman has gained Omnilingualism, the ability to replicated and understand any languages instantly perfectly flawlessly, as well as speaking or writing it without mistakes. Cyborg-Superman is therefore able to communicate with almost all living lifeforms, whether it'd be humans, animals, lanterns, etc...
- Hacking Mastery: Henshaw is a master at hacking mainframe computers containing complex information and bypassing extremely difficult levels of online security. He can also psionically hack the systems of incredibly complex devices and weapons to help him in a variety of situations. Henshaw can hack whatever he wants, whenever he wants, effortlessly and with ease. He can access any information stored on the Internet or on technology, at will and with ease. Hank can easily, whenever he wants, perform any feat involving technology.
- Astronautics Mastery: Henshaw, by virtue of his former employment, has extensive, even innate, knowledge of interstellar exploration. He can pilot a spaceship with astonishing skill, survive extraterrestrial environments, possess an in-depth knowledge of the cosmos and more.

Smallville[]
Hank Henshaw appears in the eleventh season of Smallville comic "Guardian". He was an astronaut recruited to command LexCorp's space shuttle, for Guardian defense platforms. However, during the shuttle's launch, it began leaking radiation. Henshaw was severely burned as a result but was saved by Superman. Out of a desire to save her husband's life, Terri accepted the help from Lex Luthor.
Lex arranged for Henshaw's consciousness to be transferred into a S.T.A.R. Labs robot. However, Henshaw's new state caused him trauma and he became enraged. Henshaw tried to kill Lex, but Terri managed to convince him that it was Superman's fault (as he hadn't managed to save him in time, despite previously having moved a planet). So, when Superman appeared, Henshaw began to fight him.
The two fought for a few minutes, until Superman separated the head of Henshaw's robot body from the rest of it. Afterwards, Henshaw calmed down and apologized to Superman. His head was placed in secure storage at S.T.A.R. Labs. Over the next few months, Henshaw became close friends with Tess Mercer (who had recently had also had her consciousness uploaded into a computer), who would frequently visit him.
Henshaw remained at S.T.A.R. Labs until Eclipso attacked the city. Superman had been sent to another universe, leaving the city defenseless. Henshaw broke out and made himself a new robot body. He joined forced with Supergirl and Superboy and fought Eclipso.
