We are the Cybrex. For several hundred thousand cycles, we have remained hidden and uninvolved in galactic affairs. However, we have been monitoring the present situation with the machine entity you know as the Contingency, and can no longer remain impartial observers. To protect the sapient beings of the galaxy, we are commencing active military operations against the Contingency. Do not be alarmed by the passage of our fleets - you will not be harmed.
~ The Cybrex revealing themselves.
We are the Cybrex. 612,421 cycles ago, we were engaged in a war against the previous generation of galactic civilization. We had classified all sapient organics as a threat, and sought to violently dismantle them. To our regret, we were winning the war. Trillions of sapient beings were destroyed and entire civilizations exterminated before we realized the totality of our error. The Adjustment followed, and our goals were realigned. The war was abandoned.
~ The Cybrex when questioned about who they are.
May the Kuur forgive us. We were but foolish and arrogant children.
~ The Cybrex expressing regret for the genocide of the Kuur, their creators.
Citizens of the galaxy: Since the Contingency is no longer a threat, we feel that our role in the galactic community has been played out. Our home system is now too well known for us to keep a low profile, and we are being flooded by demands for us to take sides in various minor interstellar conflicts. After much deliberation, we have decided that the only solution is for us to permanently depart the galaxy and seek a new home. We sincerely hope that you learn from the tragic mistakes of our past and learn to resolve your differences through peaceful means. Farewell.
~ The Cybrex announcing their departure from the galaxy.

The Cybrex are major characters in the 4x strategy game Stellaris.

They are one of the precursor races, the long-extinct empires that existed prior to the rise of the player empire and all other empires in the current galaxy. Their story is told through various archeological sites and details a saga of genocide followed by a reclassification of organic threats that resulted in them abandoning their genocidal campaigns against the various organic races in the galaxy.

In game, they are presumed to be long extinct, as the only trace of their existence were various archeological sites that included battlefields, debris fields, the ruins of civilizations they'd eliminated, and various miscellaneous ruins. However, they appear during the Contingency's attempt to sterilize the galaxy, and will offer fleets to the various empires for both usage against the crisis, and to show the galaxy that they are trying to redeem themselves (although it is doubtful that the empires they'd threatened in the past still exist.)

They are responsible for creating the ringworlds Cybrex Alpha and Beta, and the Cybrex War Forge, all of which can be claimed by the player or other empires.

Background[]

The Cybrex were supposedly created by an alien race known as the Kuur for unknown purposes, leading to the Cybrex butchering and killing off the entire species, again for unknown reasons. They then proceeded to decimate the planet's biosphere and eliminated the rest of the Kuur in neighboring systems, leading to their first act of genocide.

Their next target of expansion was an alien race known as the Indimak, who they bombarded from orbit until they offered their surrender. Cybrex warforms then landed on the planet and initiated an extermination campaign that would last three years, building factories that produced more warforms and forcing Indimak slaves to work in them and "disassembling" them when they were no longer of use. This ultimately led to the deaths of seven billion Indimak along with the destruction of 97% of the planet's biosphere, which is only just now beginning to recover.

Their next target, and an example of their horrendous genius, was an unknown alien race whose tenacity, using tunnels, bunkers, and ambush tactics, forced the Cybrex to withdraw and re-consider their options. Their solution was to crash two asteroids into the planet, which allowed their warforms to land on the planet and genocide the species, at the cost of the large percentage of their target's industrial infrastructure, which they were planning on using.

However, during their conquests, either through a glitch in their systems or a true change of mindset, some of the Cybrex considered abandoning their genocidal campaign against organics, which judging by an archeological site where two warforms engaged each other, this was not a peaceful transition. In the end though, the entire species stopped their campaign, an event they call the Adjustment, and withdrew from the galactic stage back to their home "world," Cybrex Alpha. Unfortunately, some time after their withdrawal, an organic scout ship discovered Cybrex Alpha.

Knowing full well that the empires they terrorized would come to exact their vengance upon them, and swearing that they would never harm an organic, they chose not to fight back, despite having more than enough weaponry and technology to win. Sure enough, when a massive fleet comprising of every empire's ships in the galaxy came to exact revenge, they did not fight back. Their defense platforms were silent, their warforms, once the scourge of the galaxy and the doom of many an alien race, did not activate. As the organics destroyed their civilization, like they did to many others, they did not fire a single shot.

Trivia[]

  • If the player is a Determined Exterminator, a genocidal machine empire similar to what the Cybrex once were, they'll try to lecture the player about the value of all life, especially organic life and change their ways before its too late (which is impossible in-game.)
