Biography[]
Past[]
Cynthia Weaver was born in Bright Falls, Washington in 1946 to unnamed parents, and later became a writer and editor for the Bright Falls Record. Around the 1960s-1970s, she encountered the poet Thomas Zane, becoming infatuated with him despite the latter being in a relationship with Barbara Jagger. When Zane's beloved drowned in Cauldron Lake, Cynthia was saddened by the incident, but relieved due to her envy for Jagger's romance with the poet. Following Zane's disappearance on Diver's Isle, Cynthia received messages from Zane from the Dark Place to be the "Lady of the Light". With her position, Weaver maintained the town's light sources to protect citizens from the Dark Presence, and was given the Angel Lamp and Clicker to safekeep until Alan Wake's arrival.
While protecting Bright Falls, Weaver started to leave supplies for Alan across the town and left messages in light-sensitive paint to warn him during his journey. Despite her obsessive love for Zane, she also seemed to despise to some agree as shown in some of light-sensitive paint messages. Additionally, Cynthia was dubbed the "town eccentric" by residents due to her obsession with light and was given a nasty rhyme by Sarah Breaker according to the novel.
Alan Wake[]
With Alan's arrival in 2010, Cynthia warned him to be careful in the dark as entered the hallway of the Oh Deer Diner. Her warnings proved true when the Dark Presence manipulated Alan to go to Cauldron Lake, allowing it to take Alice and force the writer to create the manuscript of Departure. As Alan battled the Dark Presence, he came across Weaver's supplies by following light-sensitive and messages that warned of "Taken" and Dr. Emil Hartman. Once Alan traveled to the Anderson farm and heard their song, "The Poet and the Muse", he deduced that he needed to meet with Cynthia to defeat the Dark Presence. She encountered Alan, Barry Wheeler and Sheriff Sarah Breaker at the Bright Falls Light & Power and provided him with the Clicker. With the Clicker, Alan saved Alice and defeated the Dark Presence at the cost of being trapped in the Dark Place.
Becoming Taken[]
Years following Alan's disappearance, Cynthia was sent to the Valhalla Nursing Home as she passed her Lady of Light position onto Wake's fan Rose Marigold. Despite becoming older, she remained obsessed with maintaining light in the nursing home and the wellness, often chastising Vladimir Blum for not changing light bulbs when needed to. At some point, Rose received messages from "Alan" to send the Angel Lamp to the Dark Place, resulting in Marigold stealing the item from Weaver's possessions. Upon realizing her last item of Zane's was stolen, Weaver fell into despair and was soon targeted by the Dark Presence. When taking a bath, she was murdered by the darkness after the light bulb in the bathroom broke and was turned into taken.
As "The Drowned Lady", Cynthia haunted the nursing home as other residents and staff were turned into taken; either by Weaver or the Dark Presence killing them. Rose and Ahti became aware of Weaver's transformation, with the former attempting to protect the nursing home from her lurking. Due to the urban legend of a teenage boy drowning in a bunker underneath the nursing home, another overlap was formed, allowing the Dark Presence and Scratch to use for the manuscript of Return.
Alan Wake II[]
With Tor's romantic interest in Cynthia, she brainwashes the seer to lure him into the overlap while Odin was left bed-stricken from his injuries. However, Tor contacted his granddaughter Saga for help, but is stopped in his tracks by Cynthia and sent to the wellness center for his injuries. Having lost her case to the Federal Bureau of Control, Saga arrives at the nursing home and speaks with Rose and the residents. She initially encounters a normal Cynthia near a window, whom references missing her Angel Lamp before a flash of her taken form appears.
Aware that Cynthia has been turned by the Dark Presence, Saga speaks with Odin via the mind place and traverses the nursing home and wellness center for Tor. During the investigation, Cynthia succeeded in luring Tor into the overlap, but also focused on halting Saga by cutting off the power and taking the Old Gods' record "Anger's Remorse" into her locked room. Despite these setbacks, Saga retrieved the record and entered the overlap, where she battled and killed Cynthia and rescued Tor.
