Cyrus Gold, also referred to as The Acolyte or Brother Cyrus, was a supporting antagonist in season 2 of Arrow. He is loosely based on DC supervillain Solomon Grundy.
He is a close friend of Sebastian Blood, aka Brother Blood and was one of the original members of the Church of Blood. Gold was also the first one of Blood's test subjects to survive the injection of the Mirakuru serum form Lian Yu, which increased his strength and reflexes. With his newfound powers Gold became Blood's second in command, adapting the Acolyte alias and stole supplies Sebastian required to create more men like Gold. Their attempts were foiled by the Arrow who managed to destroy the centrifuge, killing Gold in the process.
He was portrayed by Graham Shiels.
Biography[]
Background[]
Cysrus Gold was a preacher at Zandia Orphanage located in the Glades of Star City (then known as Starling City) where he met a young boy named Sebastian Blood who had been abandoned by his mother after she allegedly killed her abusive husband. Gold took a personal liking to Sebastian eventually becoming an older brother/father-figure to the once quiet orphan.
As time went on Sebastian left the orphanage, but his friendship with Cyrus remained strong over the years. The two of them even appeared together in a photograph as adults that had been discovered by Laurel Lance.
Becoming stronger[]
Following the earthquake caused by Malcolm Merlyn's Undertaking that had demolished a significant portion of the Glades and killed dozens of innocent civilians, Gold joined Sebastian's cause of restoring the city to its former glory by becoming its new mayor, unaware that his friend was actually working for Slade Wilson who had supplied Blood with the Mirakuru super-soldier serum as part of Slade's campaign to ruin the life of his former friend Oliver Queen who was secretly the Arrow. Under the guise of Brother Blood, Sebastian began injecting several men including Cyrus with the Mirakuru to create an unstoppable army of human weapons.

Cyrus Gold survives being injected with the Mirakuru.
When Cyrus willingly received the serum blood came out of his eyes and was in a state of agony until he apparently died. However, while watching a news report about the vigilante taking down Count Vertigo, Blood was made aware that there had been a development in Gold's condition by Officer Daily and went to see him in his Brother Blood disguise. Blood had asked his friend how he felt to which Gold responded by saying that he was now "stronger", making him Blood's first successful test subject which made him very pleased.
Gold immediately became Blood's super-powered right hand man and began committing robberies in Starling City as the Acolyte, in order to obtain the materials Sebastian and Slade required to mass-produce the Mirakuru, so that they could bring the city to its knees.
Fighting the Arrow[]
In his alter-ego, Gold breaks into Queen Consolidated's Applied Sciences division, easily overpowering two armed guards, killing them and steals a centrifuge by ripping it out of the ground with his bare hands.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Skilled hand-to-hand combatant: Gold was a proficient hand-to-hand combatant, as he was able to match and nearly best Oliver Queen (a much more skilled fighter) in close quarter combat on more than one occasion with assistance from his enhancements.
- Mirakuru Enhancement: Thanks to the Mirakuru, Gold gained various superhuman abilities including increased strength, accelerated healing, and enhanced reflexes and durability; sustaining minimal damage from gunshots and the vigilante's arrows.
- Superhuman Strength: Upon being injected with the Mirakuru, Cyrus had shown sufficient strength well beyond the capabilities of an average human. He teared down a reinforced titanium down with his hands, carried an industrial centrifuge over one shoulder, and threw heavy crates without breaking a sweat. Cyrus had proved to be more than a physical match for the Arrow and several SCPD officers.
- Superhuman Durability: Cyrus had been shown to take bullets and arrows without flinching, he could also endure blows from normal humans completely unfazed, and effortlessly land on his feet from several stories without being hurt or slowed down. Felicity Smoak remarked that Gold's muscle density is similar to common concrete, as evidenced by the deformed arrow head that was used to stab him.
- Enhanced Agility and Reflexes: Cyrus was able to quickly dodge many of the arrows that were shot at him, and, even when injured by some of the projectiles, could easily avoid some of the Arrow punches, as well as deliver his own. In addition, Cyrus reflexes were significantly enhanced; enabling him to keep up with highly trained fighters like Oliver Queen and his partner John Diggle.
- Accelerated Healing Factor: Cyrus was able to almost instantly heal from minor or mild injuries, and could recover from injuries such as gunshots, stab wounds and high velocity impacts at an impressive rate, provided that they were not immediately fatal. However, Cyrus was instantly killed when he was exposed to a mixture of chemicals during his last battle with the Arrow, despite his enhanced rate of healing and endurance.
