D.I.L (alternatively written as Dee Eye Ell) is an antagonist from the light novel franchise Sword Art Online, being a secondary antagonist in the second half of the Sword Art Online, Alicization Arc.

She is a resident of the Underworld, specifically the Dark Territory. She serves as the Chancellor of the Dark Mage Guild and a member of the Council of Ten that governs the Dark Territory.

She was voiced by Yūko Kaida in Japanese and Kari Wahlgren in English.

Appearance[]

D.I.L has the appearance of tall, tanned human woman.

Like most Dark Mages, D.I.L dresses in a very seductive manner, reflecting their hedonistic lifestyle. Although D.I.L goes further than usual dressing far more revealing than her subordinates, wearing the bare minimum of clothes.

Biography[]

D.I.L is the Chancellor of the Dark Mage Guild and a member of the Council of Ten that governs the Dark Territory. Vixur the Dark Knight Commander, describes her as being very similar to Quinella in both personality and goals.

Early on, D.I.L had planned to kidnap Vixur's lieutenant and secret lover, Lipia. Her plans end up by interrupted by the arrival of Emperor Vecta. D.I.L and all of the other Dark Territory members pledge their loyalty to Vecta and eagerly agree to his order to go to war with the Human Realm.

D.I.L had plans for the Dark Mage guild to stay at the back, and await for the many casualties from the battle to generate spatial resources to power her Sacred Art spells. Shortly after, Dee Eye Dell decides to release all 800 of their Minion golems into battle to attack the Integrity Knights of the Human Realm, knowing fully well and uncaring that the first few waves of the Dark Territory goblins and giants were also on the battlefield and would also be attacked and killed.

Her plan to use the excess spatial resources from the battle's many casualties is foiled, with the Integrity Knights anticipating this and having Alice Synthesis Thirty use up all of the spatial resources in a powerful Sacred Art first. With no spatial resources left, the Dark Mages are unable to cast even the simplest of spells. She reports this to Vecta, who suggests performing a sacrifice of three thousand to use as spatial resources, choosing the orcs to become the sacrifices. While D.I.L is surprised by this proposition at first, she quickly becomes ecstatic at being granted permission to take so many lives.

D.I.L then confronts Orc Chief, Lilpilin, and demands he provides his men for sacrifice. Lilpilin at first angrily refuses, saying he shouldn't have to pay for her failures. However, D.I.L reveals the order came from Vecta himself, meaning Lilpilin could not disobey due to the Dark Territory's Law of Power. D.I.L watches with euphoria as three thousand orcs, including Lilpilin's lover, have their bodies dissolved in a ritual.

The sacrifice generates a staggering supply of spatial resources, to which D.I.L uses to power a high-level spell that creates the devestating death worms, creatures of magic that cannot be destroyed or nullified once summoned. D.I.L sends the death worms to kill the dragon-riding Integrity Knights, however Eldrie Synthesis Thirty One intervenes, getting in the path of the death worms. Eldrie manages to save the other Integrity Knights, especially his mentor Alice, at the cost of being fatally wounded.

Eldrie's sacrifice leads a furious Alice to vengefully assault the Dark Mage Guild on her dragon. Fearful of her life, D.I.L impales many of her own fellow dark mages to drain their Life force, in order to preserve her own life.

Soon after, Leafa logs into the Underworld using the Goddess Terraria account, to which Leafa meets Lilpilin and voluntarily agrees to be his prisoner. D.I.L notices the presence of this young human girl, so appears before her and immediately begins painfully Leafa of her Life. Due to the Terraria account having a healing function, Leafa would not die but would be subjected to this ordeal indefinitely. D.I.L also breaks off Leafa's armor to show Lilpilin what a female human's chest looked like.

Lilpilin protests that Leafa was his prisoner, to which D.I.L derogatorily calls him an animal and she was disgusted by him wearing clothes as is he was a human. She then tells Lilpilin she would give up the girl to him only if he stripped off his clothes and ran around on all fours like a proper animal, to which Lilpilin agrees to. Seeing how much agony Leafa was in, Lilpilin can no longer stand idly by and watch. Lilpilin's determination to disobey D.I.L, causes him to break the Seal of the Right Eye, where he attacks D.I.L with his sword. D.I.L is furious that an animal would dare to attack her, casting Leafa aside and tries to kill Lilpilin. However Leafa, now fully restored, raises her blade and strikes D.I.L down, with the dark mage in her dying moments unable to understand why a human would kill another human to save an animal.

Personality[]

D.I.L is a vain, selfish, sadistic, and hedonistic woman. She is concerned only about amassing more power for herself and is uncaring on how many people need to die for her to reach her goals.

In order to get into the good graces of Emperor Vector, whom she pledged full loyalty to, she enthusiastically carries out his suggestion to sacrifice 3000 orcs to provide the spatial resources for a high-level Sacred Art. This simultaneously shows D.I.L is willing to sink to any lows, as well as her immense sadism when she gleefully commits mass-murder.

Her selfishness is fully displayed when she unhesitatingly begins life-draining everyone around her, including her own allies, when her own life is threatened. This indicates D.I.L prioritizes her own self-preservation above all else.

Trivia[]

  • D.I.L is her actual name and not an acronym. This is because Dark Mages are customarily named after three phonetic letters of the English alphabet.
  • Her name is written either as D.I.L or as Dee Eye Ell depending on translation. In the original light novels her name is written in letter format, while in the English sub of the anime her name is written phonetically.
