“ | Oh, yeah I'm kinda like, uh, freakin' pissed off, man. I always wanna be a Soundcloud artist, man. But, uh, no one wants to, uh, you know, listen to my freakin', uh, my shit and stuff, man! It makes me angry, man! | „ |
~ DJ Spit explaining his woes to the Smiling Friends. |
“ | GET OUT OF MI HEAD! | „ |
~ DJ Spit's mantra as he assumes the Smiling Friends are gaslighting him, and his most famous quote. |
DJ Spit is a supporting antagonist in the adult animated series Smiling Friends. He is a short-tempered critter, an aspiring Soundcloud rapper, and a criminal.
He is voiced by series' co-creator Zach Hadel, who also voices Jason, Satan, Mip, Gnarly, Mr. Peanut, and Mr. Landlord in the same series.
Appearance[]
DJ Spit is a scrawny, yellow humanoid with light stubble, red eyes with large eye bags, three wavy black strands of hair, a five o'clock shadow, thick eyebrows, and stumps for hands (though in some shots, he has normal five-fingered hands). He walks around shirtless, except for a golden crucifix necklace, and wears very loose light blue pants with stripes and black shoes.
Personality[]
Despite his behavior as a stereotypical gangster, he is relatively amicable and can hold friendly conversations when unprovoked, but he is very short-tempered and unstable, even violently so. He is also seemingly absentminded, as he is seen mumbling to himself and stumbling over his words. His behavior could possibly be due to, in part, drug usage, as his mannerisms, living conditions and appearance suggest.
He writes and posts rap music on Soundcloud with hopes of one day becoming a successful rapper, but his rap "songs", unfortunately, are just him mumbling incoherently to an odd beat, therefore he gets little to no attention online, adding to his misery and moodiness.
He seems to be of Latino-American descent based on his accent and has multiple verbal ticks, especially ending his sentences with "man".
Biography[]
DJ Spit lives in a poor neighborhood called Crimeville and dreams of one day escaping the slums by becoming a successful Soundcloud rapper. However, he has had little success, much to his dismay and anger.
One day, he is visited by Grim and Gnarly of the Frowning Friends, an organization dedicated to making people give up on their dreams and embrace nihilism. The Frowning Friends tell DJ Spit he should give up on his rap career altogether.
Later that day, while DJ Spit is mumbling to himself about beating up those who insult him, he is visited by Pim and Charlie from the Smiling Friends, who aim to make people happy. Pim asks him why he looks so grim, and Spit informs him of his woes as an unsuccessful artist and shows them a song of his, "$piTz PaRadise." Pim encourages DJ Spit to keep practicing to improve his craft, but, since Pim and Charlie look very similar to Grim and Gnarly, respectively, DJ Spit assumes it’s still them and that they’re trying to gaslight him. Ignoring Pim and Charlie’s reassurances, a confused and threatened Spit yells at them to “get out of his head,” pulls out a gun, and points it at them, with Charlie unsuccessfully trying to wrestle it out of his hands.
The Smiling Friends later visit Mr. Man, another victim of the Frowning Friends, who also mistakes Pim and Charlie for Grim and Gnarly and yells at them to stop gaslighting him and “get out of his head.” As Mr. Man echoes Spit’s mantra, his head and voice suddenly morph into DJ Spit’s, and he too threatens the Smiling Friends at gunpoint. The two run away after Charlie tries, unsuccessfully, to disarm him a second time.
DJ Spit and Mr. Man (now both back to themselves) later attended the Frowning Friends' speech along with all the others indoctrinated by Grim and Gnarly. Luckily, however, the Smiling Friends' boss, Mr. Boss, broke into the Frowning Friends' building with a rifle and confronted them, intending to shoot them dead. This caused Grim to immediately beg for his life, break down crying, and even urinate himself. A baffled and angry DJ Spit was the first in the crowd to point out the hypocrisy of the Frowning Friends being so attached to life despite all their talk of nihilism. He and everyone else abandoned them and left.
It's unknown if, after being disillusioned with the Frowning Friends' ideology, DJ Spit regained the will to make music.
DJ Spit returns in the episode "A Allan Adventure" to steal Allan's presumed box of paperclips under the orders of Mr. Landlord. He takes them and runs to the roof of a building where he hijacks a helicopter while Allan gives chase, claiming to be fleeing to Tijuana. The helicopter flies into restricted airspace, prompting the US military to try to stop DJ Spit. However, he opens fire on the fighter pilots. A firefight ensues, ending with a fighter pilot firing a missile at the helicopter, causing it to crash. DJ Spit is last seen impaled on a helicopter blade asking Siri to call the hospital. Whether he survived is unknown.

Trivia[]
- DJ Spit's design originally included visible pubic hair, but Adult Swim had them removed in the official airing.
- Despite his short screen time, DJ Spit is one of the most well-known and beloved characters in the series for his hilarious mannerisms and his wide array of quotable lines.
- Although some believe he says, "Get out of me head!" when yelling at Pim and Charlie, his vaguely Latino accent means he could actually be saying "Get out of mi head!", "mi" being the possessive adjective of the first singular person in Spanish.
- Near the end of his song, "$piTz PaRadise", a faint "Wehehe" can be heard. This is a reference to how Stan, Kyle and Kenny laugh in "Loud Junk", a South Park parody from early Newgrounds which Smiling Friends' co-creator Zach Hadel has referenced multiple times when on the channel OneyPlays.
