And behold, the Daemon Prince comes in the full panopoly of war. At his passing, the trees scream their rage to the uncaring sky and the stones writhe with hatred. He hunts the enemies of his Master, for his meat is mortal flesh and his wine mortal souls.
~ Grimoire Daemonicus

Daemon Princes are once-mortals who have been given the ultimate reward by one or all of the Chaos Gods. They are unique among the Daemons of Chaos in that they still possess their souls, however blackened and evil it may be, and therefore the core of a mortal.[6] They are the ultimate traitors of mortal kind, trading away their mortality for daemon skin and everlasting life under the banner of Chaos. In the hierarchy of power, Daemon Princes sit above all save the Greater Daemons themselves.[7]

Most Daemon Princes were originally Chaos worshipping Humans or Beasts of Chaos.

General[]

Becoming a Daemon Prince is the greatest reward a Champion of Chaos can hope to attain. Achieved only by surviving the scrutiny of the Eye of God, only a scant few mortals are ever lifted from their world to sample the delights of Chaos at the table of their masters. Upon attaining this distinction, the Character undergoes an awful transformation: his flesh tears from his new Daemonic form, like a new butterfly from its cocoon.
~ Tome of Corruption

Excepting perhaps the Keepers of Secrets, Daemon Princes are some of the most varied kinds of daemons under the banner of Chaos. They are often larger than a man and always much stronger, blessed with dark strength from the gods. Every Daemon Prince began as a mortal, most often a human from the icy, Chaos Ruined northlands of the Warhammer World. However, there are some who come from the southern lands, betraying the forces of Order to do the bidding of Chaos. Mortals that seek daemonhood desire power, believing themselves to be master and not pawn, gods and not mere pieces upon the board of the great game. However, their ascension only binds them tighter to Chaos and to their chosen lord as the crowns of gods are not for mortals to wear.[8]

Daemon Princes are unique among other Daemons, for along with still possessing their soul, they possess much of their former personalities as well. These are twisted of course, bent and colored according to the whims of the gods, but this wide variety of physical and personality traits gives the Daemon Prince a broader utility than it's more powerful "siblings", the Greater Daemons. Pure Daemons of Chaos without any mortality to speak of regard the Daemon Prince with a range of attitudes, ranging from the respectful to the patronizing to the outright hateful.[9]

The bestowment of the gift of Daemonhood is one that came at any point in a Champions life, usually following a particularly noteworthy deed or long, hard service in the eyes of the gods that could last decades or even centuries.[10] For every Chaos Champion raised into Daemonhood, there are countless thousands who die in the attempt or find themselves beset by careless mutation after mutation by the whimsical Chaos gods. These individuals are called Chaos Spawns, the other finality for those who seek the gift of the gods. Thus, the pursuit of Daemonhood is an all-or-nothing game, where a Champion succeeds and basks in the favor of his patron forevermore or fails and joins the gibbering, bestial spawn in eternal torment. Those who exist south question the true difference in these paths, for both the Prince and Spawn are beasts that serve their god, thinking with the mind and ideals of their deity.

In truth, both Chaos Spawn and Daemon Prince are mere slaves to darkness.[11]

Daemon Princes are usually dedicated to one God before their ascension, thus serve that god without delay when the rise. However, in rare instances, the Chaos Gods will jointly bless a mortal and the resulting prince will be a Daemon Prince of Chaos Undivided.[12]

Notable Daemon Princes[]

  • Be'lakor was the first of all Daemon Prince's. It is unknown what he original was or what deeds he commited to attract the attention of the Ruinous Four, but he is ancient and the most powerful of the once-mortals. Deceitful, arrogant, and power-hungry, Be'lakor once thought to swindle the gods and was so presumptious as to demand more power from them. For this, he was struck down; Tzeentch was especially angered with him, cursing Be'lakor to crown all Everchosens but to never wear the Crown of Domination himself. Thusly, he holds the title of Bearer. However, Be'lakor has tried several times to slip his chains, with Archaon being his latest attempt to do so.
  • Valkia The Bloody was the Chieftainess of the Schwarzvolf in her mortal life and died trying to deliver the head of another Daemon Prince, called Locephax, she had slew to the feet of her master. For beating the creature and braving the wastes, Valkia was awoken from death itself by Khorne and granted Daemonhood. She is known as the Gorequeen, the Bringer of Glory, and is Khorne's Consort. The Blood God's eye is never far from her and he is more fond of her than any of his minions.
  • The Godslayer was a Daemon Prince introduced in Warhammer III. Originally named Yuri Barkov, the Godslayer was a kislevite man tricked into betraying his own god by Be'lakor. He was uplifted by the Ruinous Powers after dealing a deadly blow to the Kislevite God Ursun, becoming a Daemon Prince of Chaos Undivided. As they once did Be'lakor, the Godslayer is showered in gifts and favor by the four gods, each one trying to yoke him to their cause forevermore.
  • Azazel was a Daemon Prince of Slaanesh and is said to be the most beautiful of daemonkind. He was a mortal man in life, the dearest companion of Sigmar, but jealousy and the death of his sister would tear the two friends apart. He would go on to betray Sigmar and swear his alliegance to Slaanesh, eventually uplifted to become captain of Slaanesh's Ecstatic Legions.
  • Suth was a Daemon Prince of Khorne. Called Heinous Suth, he was worshipped as a minor god by some of the inhabitants of Salzenmund, the Khorne-touched capital of Nordland. Since slain, he has been reborn as a the Red Child, a young woman yet to prove herself and gain her daemonhood.[13]
  • Baron Callard was the lord of Braquiron and caught in the middle of a duel between Bloodthirsters Gorefeaster and Doomfoe. He manages to kill them, winning a contest of arms between the two brothers, and catching Khorne's eye. Pleased by the strength, prowess, and rage of the man, Khorne ascends him into daemonhood.[14]

Quotes from Daemon Princes[]

Slaughter is required. Blood must be spilt. We have been summoned and cannot be bound until the crimson flows. You haven't brought any worthy sacrifices? Then the blood will be yours.
~ Horg the Gorechaser[15]
Rest now. Sleep. For in The Sleeping you can achieve anything you desire. Be a king, become a prodigious lover, be richer than any Marienburg Burgomeister. Forget your mortal shell, it is no consequence. Leave it in my care.
~ Morluz the Indolent, Daemon Prince of Slaanesh
I was once mortal, like you. Afflicted with an intense curiousity, led down paths and passages in my search for knowledge. I forsook everything else in my question, committed terrible acts. All that mattered was the Enigma. It was worth every sacrifice. Are you ready?
~ The Maze-Maker, Daemon Prince of Tzeentch
