Villain Overview

It's not "cursed spirit." I am Dagon. There's Hanami, Jogo, and Mahito, too. We all... We all have names!
~ Dagon expressing his individuality.

Dagon is a supporting antagonist in the anime/manga series Jujutsu Kaisen. He is unregistered special grade Disaster Curse, cursed spirits born from the amalgamation of humanity's fears. Alongside fellow special grade cursed spirits Hanami, Jogo, and Mahito, Dagon seeks to build a society where curses overthrow humanity and become the world's dominate species.

In Japanese, Dagon is voiced by Kenta Miyake as a cursed spirit and by Aya Endō as a cursed womb. Miyake has also voiced Giovanni in Pokémon the Series, Scar in Fullmetal Alchemist, Jirobo in Naruto, Cocytus in Overlord, Akira Takaoka in Assassination Classroom and Sydonay in Shakugan no Shana. Endō has also voiced Child-Gil in Fate and by Jamieson Price in English.

Appearance[]

As a cursed womb, Dagon first appears to be a short octopus-like creature. His back and large round head is often depicted being covered by a white cloth, and has numerous red and black striped tentacles covering his mouth area and large round eyes. He has beige-colored lower body, a pair of muscular limbs under the white drape, and, despite being depicted being able to walk, he doesn’t appear to show any legs.

Upon evolving, Dagon takes on a tall, muscular humanoid body that is mostly maroon colored with a beige areas around his arms legs, and chest and a black spot along his abdomen. He now possesses a pair of long and muscular arms, legs with three frog-like toes, and dragon-like wings along his lower back. His head is refined into a much sharper shape, with tentacles becoming longer and more pronounced. His eyes are reduced to small, yellow slits that are sunken into his skull.

Personality[]

As a cursed womb, Dagon has a rather shy and innocent nature much unlike other special grade curses spirits. He is generally unable to communicate much often with his allies, despite his true form being capable of human speech. When talking, he will prefer to use sounds like "bwoo-hoo", similarly to a muffled underwater creature. Fitting his innocent appearance for a curse, he has a cowardly nature, feeling more safe when other special grades are by his side and fearful when confronted by the upper-level jujutsu sorcerers, pitifully screaming their name for help. His domain is used as the base of operations for the special grades.

However, he became devastated and enraged upon learning of the death of his friend and curse comrade Hanami, causing him to evolve into his full form, gaining much more confidence, intelligence, and arrogance then before. This arrogancy and led him to often underestimate and even insult his human opponents, such as Maki and, fatally, Toji Fushiguro.

Abilities[]

  • Cursed Spirit Physiology: Cursed spirits are supernatural beings that are born as a result of the natural congealment of cursed energy, a type of destructive bodily energy source formed from the negative emotions of humans. Curses are composed entirely of cursed energy and, being metaphysical creatures, can't normally be seen by regular humans. They don't have any concept of aging and don't require sustenance, and are usually incapable of complex thought. Dagon is an incredibly powerful cursed spirit with immense amounts of cursed energy, as he was born from the amalgamation of humanity's fear of water-related natural disasters. He is also highly intelligent, being capable of human speech and employing advanced tactics. Even as a cursed womb, he is strong enough to be classified as the highest grade of cursed spirit: special grade. Cursed spirits can use jujutsu sorcery, which consists of expending one's own supply of cursed energy to create supernatural phenomena. Users of jujutsu sorcery can use advanced techniques, known as "cursed techniques," to grant themselves special abilities. Curses are naturally gifted in jujutsu, due to their bodies being composed entirely of cursed energy. Even in his cursed womb state, Dagon is already capable of using the most advanced technique possible with jujutsu. Due to his enormous amounts of cursed energy, Dagon can continue expending his cursed energy for significant periods of time without tiring.
    • Hydrokinesis: Some curses are born with the inherent ability to use a specific cursed technique, known as an "innate technique," which can typically be used solely by them. Dagon has an unnamed innate technique which, in keeping with his nature as a curse linked to water-related disasters, allows him to conjure and telekinetically manipulate water formed out of his own cursed energy. He has fine control over his highly versatile innate technique, and the sheer volume of water he can conjure is enough to easily submerge an entire subway station in a short time.
      • Personal Domain Creation:

        Horizon of the Captivating Skandha.

The most powerful technique available to wielders of jujutsu sorcery is a "domain." A domain expansion consists of creating a barrier and filling it with one's own cursed energy. The cursed energy imbued into the barrier will instantly construct the user's innate domain (the visual manifestation of their mind) within the sectioned off space, and the innate technique of the user will also be imbued in the barrier. Despite domain expansion being the most advanced cursed technique, Dagon is able to use it as a cursed womb. Even as a fully-fledged cursed spirit, however, Dagon can't conjure his domain more than once a day due to its huge energy cost. Because of its calm environment, Dagon's allies frequently use the domain as a place to spend time or have meetings.
    • Inhalation: Dagon is capable to suck into his mouth an immense number of civilians and non-sorcerers like a vacuum cleaner from several meters away with seemingly no limits to how many humans his body can contain as well as objects that have a larger size than his mouth, an inescapable ability for his victims. Furthermore, in his evolved form, he can easily generate very large and high tidal waves by moving his fingertip that could have easily drowned Maki's entire team if their fight took place underground as noted by her.
How many people have you eaten?
~ Naobito Zenin.

Upon being sent flying away by a Naobito Zenin, he accidentally spitted out the remainings of the certain amount of innocents he devoured, showing that it only take a few hours for his victims to be digested.

Full Form[]

  • Death Swarm: Dagon can summon a boundless amount of fish shikigamis used inside his domain expansion and that are extremely hard to be dodged. The effect of the technique can counter any other techniques that can cancel other’s, such as Falling Blossom Emotion, to which he can even separate the use of his technique within his enemies.
  • Increased Intelligence: In his evolved form, he became more tactical and cunning instincts in battles. Such as being able to blind Naobito from attacking by using his technique, Falling Blossom Emotion with the use of a shikigami swarm using Death Swarm. He also quickly realized that he simply can't counter Naobito's speed, to which he manage to think of making a distraction by hand sign of a technique, giving him chance to activate his domain expansion.
  • Domain Expansion: Horizon of the Captivating Skandha: The peaceful beach which serves as the base of operations for the curses also serves as the home of his devastating domain expansion, which allows Dagon's infinite supply of Death Swarm shikigami to always hit their target.

Trivia[]

  • Dagon's name design is likely inspired from the works of the American writer H.P Lovecraft.
    • However, while his name and role as the aquatic-based disaster curse of the seas resembles that of Dagon, his design featuring a tentacle-adorning mouth and back wings more closely resembles Cthulhu.
