Daisuke Torakura was the main antagonist of the Detective Conan/Case Closed two-part episode "Dracula's Villa Murder Case" ("Vampire Villa" in the dub). He was once known as a famous romance writer then turned famed horror novelist to his fan, but to the people who really knew him, he was more of a monster then in his books.
He was voiced by Jun Hazumi, who also voiced Mori in DNA² and Roland Daggett in the Japanese dub of Batman: The Animated Series.
Biography[]
Daisuke made his first appearance when Kogoro was invited to his castle villa to hire him for a simple case, which was later revealed to be nothing more than to spy on his young wife, believing her faithfulness towards him is in question, even offering a large amount of money as payment plus any other expense.
Later as he was talking to his editor about the new book he will finish soon, he decided to head to his study and watch his favorite vampire film, which his student, Toshiya Tadokoro, got for him. Later after Toshiya tried to call Daisuke on his phone, there was no answer so Kogoro, Conan, Ran and the others went outside after (after the snowstorm stopped) to discover his window opened and a set of footprints near said window. To everyone's horror, Daisuke Torakura was found dead by being stabbed in the heart with a stake and tied to a cross.
With the Police unable to make it until morning, Kogoro had to deduce who the killer was and believed that Killer was either Etsuko Torakura (his recently widowed wife) or Shuichi Hamura (a North Kantou University folklore researcher) as it was revealed that Etsuko never loved Daisuke but rather Shuichi as she revealed why she married him in the first place: eight years ago, prior to the series, Etsuko's father company was hitting on hard times, to the point where it would go bankrupt. However, Daisuke (who was a friend of her father's) made them a deal, in exchange for investing into the company and thus saving it, Etsuko must marry him and become his trophy wife, even though she had just finished college. However, it was later revealed that he was the reason why the company nearly went bankrupt, but she was unable to divorce him due to a condition that has his name in the company and if she does, he would be ruining the business.
After Kogoro's failed deducing that either one of them could be the killer, (because there was no footprint on the roof of the corridor) it was believed that the killer was really Fumio Doi, who is the editor-in-chief of Monthly Horror Times when it was discovered that manuscripts from other writers were found on Daisuke's desk. Fumio then revealed the shocking truth; that Daisuke's talent for writing has long since been gone and explain how seven years ago, Fumio made some bad choices in the stock market and found himself in debt. Seeing this as an opportunity, Daisuke made Fumio a deal; In exchange for giving him the manuscripts from other writers, Daisuke will settle all his debts. However, Fumio then revealed another truth, that despite being Daisuke's student, Toshiya was actually his ghostwriter (meaning all the books that Daisuke wrote over the years were mostly written by Toshiya himself), who Fumio introduce when he couldn't give him anymore of the other manuscripts.
While he admits he was the ghostwriter, he revealed that he didn't want him dead as he revealed why he became Daisuke's ghostwriter; He explains that his sister (who is 10 years younger than him) is currently in the hospital due to kidney failure and Daisuke had promised to pay for her medical bills as long as Toshiya remained his ghostwriter until further notice. With only three of the four suspects confirm to have a motive to kill Daisuke, Kogoro (who thought there was a secret passage in the studies) came up with the foolish conclusion that one of them might be a vampire for real since there it was unknown how the killer killed Daisuke without going through the corridor while everyone was in the living room.
Conan (via Kogoro) then revealed that Toshiya Tadokoro is the killer and revealed how he did it and how he was able to lock the door from the inside, He even revealed that the footprint found near the study was planted by him Toshiya then revealed his motive for killing Daisuke; it seemed that his sister (and remaining family member) had died over a year ago due to Daisuke's bribing her doctor to only treat her enough to extend her stay and Toshiya help of writing his books, only for her to die from her condition. He didn't know about it until a month ago when the nurse who took care of her couldn't hide it anymore and told him to meet her in secret as she explained what happened, even mentioning how she called out to him over and over until she finally died.
Enraged to learn what happened, Toshiya finally decided to get his revenge and kill Daisuke to avenge his dead sister. With Daisuke dead, the leaked manuscripts finally ended, and a weeping Etsuko can now reclaim the business and marry Shuichi.
