~ Dakota as she prepares to kill Theodore Maddox. |
Dakota is a major antagonist in AMC's Fear the Walking Dead, acting as the primary antagonist of the episode "The Door" and as an antagonist throughout the second half of the sixth season.
At first she appears to be the sweet younger sister of Virginia, the murderous leader of the Pioneers. However, she turns out to be a murderer in her own right who seeks to usurp and kill Virginia, and is later a vital part of Theodore Maddox's plans.
She is portrayed by Zoe Colletti.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Under unknown circumstances, Virginia got pregnant with Dakota at a young age. Virginia's embarrassed parents raised Dakota as a result with the family lying to her that Dakota is actually Virginia's sister instead of her daughter. Eventually, Virginia murders her own parents, later claiming to have done it because they didn't protect Dakota.
In the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse, Virginia becomes the leader of the Pioneers, but Dakota grows to hate her "sister" for the deaths of her parents and her despotic actions and often runs away.
Saving Morgan Jones[]
After sneaking out one night, Dakota secretly follows Virginia to Humbug's Gulch where she overhears Morgan Jones' radio message ordering his friends to "just live." Believing that Morgan is the best chance of killing Virginia, Dakota saves him from a small herd of walkers and takes Morgan to safety, patching up his wound and leaving him with antibiotics. However, Dakota is unable to remove the bullet from his shoulder, leaving Morgan with an infection that ultimately turns into gangrene. Dakota leaves Morgan an unsigned note saying that she heard his message and that he has a bigger purpose to live for. She is able to return to Lawton, Oklahoma without Virginia ever suspecting her of making it as far as the Gulch.
Rebellion and Murder[]
After Morgan's friends join the community, Dakota begins rebelling against Virginia. Her latest attempt at running away results in Virginia sending John Dorie, Alicia Clark, Janis and Victor Strand after her, resulting in several deaths but cementing their place amongst her community.
After Cameron keeps catching her escaping, Dakota murders him in retaliation, an action that Virginia does her best to cover up. John Dorie, a former cop from before the apocalypse, doggedly investigates the murder with Dakota encouraging his investigation, hoping to undermine her mother's authority. John discovers a broken piece of Dakota's knife handle, but in the end, Virginia pins the murder on Janis and executes her as a punishment.
While being transported to a safe location, Dakota's convoy is attacked by Morgan and wiped out. Dakota escapes into the nearby woods where she eventually meets up with Alicia and Charlie. The trio get trapped in the lodge of a taxidermist named Ed before walkers overrun the place and Morgan rescues them. Dakota reveals to the group that she hates her "sister" and Alicia convinces Morgan to take her along with them instead of trading Dakota to Virginia for their remaining friends.
Revelations[]
On the road, the group is attacked by Virginia's Rangers, and Morgan and Dakota are separated from the others and are chased by a herd of walkers. The two manage to barricade the herd on a bridge, but Morgan's wound reopens, so they take refuge in a nearby general store where Dakota patches Morgan up once again. Morgan and Dakota are found by John whose cabin is nearby which he had fled to after abandoning Virginia and the Pioneers. Although no longer willing to get involved in events, John agrees to help the two get past the herd on the bridge and they fix up an old truck at John's cabin and attach a pair of doors to it.
With Dakota driving the truck and John and Morgan fending off the walkers, the three fight their way through the herd on the bridge. At one point, Dakota, armed with one of John's guns, saves his life by shooting an attacking walker. As Morgan searches for a better radio reception, John and Dakota search through the wreckage on the bridge for a missing part, but Dakota is forced to use her knife to put down a surviving walker. Confused by Dakota's strange behavior, John takes the knife and realizes that Dakota is in fact the murderer that he was looking for after spotting the broken piece on the knife's handle. Armed with John's gun, Dakota threatens him and he tries to talk Dakota down without success. Dakota ultimately shoots John in the chest and pushes him off of the bridge into the river where John dies and reanimates before washing up at his cabin where June is forced to put him down.
Returning to the bridge, Morgan is shocked to learn of John's fate and disarms Dakota. Dropping her façade, Dakota reveals herself to be the one who had saved Morgan so that he would kill Virginia for her. Unable to kill Dakota without risking the wrath of Virginia, Morgan imprisons her in Valley Town and reveals the truth about Dakota's crimes to the Pioneers, causing them to turn against Virginia. Morgan captures Virginia who still has Daniel Salazar and Grace as hostages and reveals to her Dakota's actions. In turn, Virginia reveals to Morgan that Dakota is actually her daughter, not her sister. Morgan brings Virginia to Valley Town where she finally reveals the truth to the imprisoned Dakota who remains unrelenting in her anger and hatred towards her mother. Virginia agrees to be executed by Morgan in order to stop the violence, but Morgan convinces everybody to banish her and Dakota instead. However, June executes Virginia, blaming Virginia for covering up Dakota's murders and thus causing her husband's death.
Trying to Help[]
Following Virginia's death, Dakota is allowed to remain in Valley Town, although she is generally distrusted and disliked due to her actions. When everyone is trying to figure out where to find the Doomsday Cult, Dakota offers up information based on Virginia's searches which the group accepts. However, Morgan rejects Dakota's offer of further help.
Joining the Doomsday Cult[]
After Alicia is captured by the doomsday cult, Dakota takes off on her own and manages to infiltrate the cult in an effort to rescue Alicia who is less than happy to see her. After meeting Dakota, Teddy gives her the nickname of Sioux based off of his favorite city in South Dakota. Taken on a mission alone with Teddy, Dakota repeatedly encourages Alicia to just kill the insane cult leader, commenting on how easy murder was for her. At the same time, however, Teddy begins to groom Dakota who is unhappy with having to reign in her darker side and not be who she wants to be with Morgan's group. After Alicia kills Cole, Teddy reveals his plans to launch nuclear missiles from a beached submarine to cause destruction to the world. Dakota suddenly turns on Alicia and sides with Teddy, having bought into his ideals. Nevertheless, Teddy keeps Dakota from interfering when Alicia radios a warning to Victor Strand. Dakota expresses confidence that it will be for nothing due to Strand's self-serving nature.
Teddy later takes Dakota with him and Riley to the sub when they prepare to launch the nukes. Teddy tells Dakota that he appreciates her just the way she is and that they are "endings" that have to die for the new beginnings that are coming. Teddy provides Dakota with a gun and she intercepts Strand as he tries to break into the Weapons Control Room. Taking the PA system, Dakota taunts Strand and the others that they have failed and that Morgan has been betrayed and killed by Strand. However, before Dakota can kill Strand, Morgan disarms her with his staff and knocks Dakota into a wall, knocking her unconscious. After checking that she's still alive, Morgan leaves Dakota unconscious on the floor as he and Strand continue to attempt to stop Teddy.
Death[]
After the cult succeeds in launching one nuclear missile with ten warheads, Dakota accompanies Teddy to an overlook where he claims that they will await their deaths together in the destruction to come. John Dorie Sr. and June arrive, but the two reveal that they have come to forgive Dakota and encourage her to abandon Teddy.
As Teddy argues with the other two adults, John finds an entrance to a secret bunker that Teddy was actually planning on riding the coming destruction out in. John tells Dakota that Teddy had needed her alive so that when the time comes, he can launch more nukes as the sub needs two people to turn the launch keys. Dakota becomes conflicted, but decides to follow Teddy's insistence that she stay true to who she really is. Pulling off a trick shot, John and June disarm Dakota and enter the bunker, but Dakota refuses to follow them, intending to die in the coming nuclear destruction. Retrieving her gun, Dakota demands to know if Teddy ever really cared about her or if he was using her. When Teddy only chuckles in response, Dakota shoots the insane cult leader in the chest and head, killing him. Dakota tells Teddy that "you said that I should never change, and I'm not. Now you never get to see your ending." Moments later, a nuclear warhead detonates close by and Dakota faces it with open arms. The sheer heat flash burns Dakota into a charred corpse, killing her.
A couple of months later, John emerges from the bunker after hearing voices due to hallucinating from alcohol withdrawal. John finds Teddy's skeleton and a burned walker nearby with a knife on the ground next to it. After picking up the knife, John sees that it has the broken piece that identifies it as Dakota's knife and realizes that the walker is actually Dakota herself. Sorrowfully calling Dakota a poor girl and someone else that he couldn't save, John puts the zombified Dakota down with her own knife. John later tells June that he had put Dakota out of her torment while he was on the surface.
During a fight with three masked figures, John stumbles and falls to the ground next to Dakota's corpse. As a group of walkers approach him, John grabs Dakota's knife out of her head and uses it to put down the walkers.
