Damian Hart is the secondary antagonist of of the anime show Beyblade: Metal Masters, the second season of the Metal Saga.
He is the captain of Team Star Breaker, a Beyblade Team representing the United States of America in the Beyblade World Championships. Once a normal boy, Damian was groomed into becoming the perfect blader by Dr. Ziggurat, the CEO of Hades Inc and the owner of HD Academy. He participated in Ziggurat's Arrangement experiments and was dubbed the "Perfect Arrangement" for his ability to undergo the highest levels of experimentation. Damian uses Hades Kerbecs BD145DS, a bey representing the three-headed guard dog of Hades. During the Beyblade World Championships, Damian and his teammates compete against other teams including Team Excalibur and Team GanGan Galaxy with the goal of not only winning but gathering data on the world's greatest bladers for Dr. Ziggurat.
He is voiced by Romi Park in the Japanese version and Carter Hayden in the English version.
Appearance[]
Damian is a short boy with pale skin, pointed grey eyes, and blue eyebrows. His hair, blue with a dark lime green section on his fringe, sticks up at the back of his head in a way that is reminiscent of dog ears. He wears a small black choker that resembles a dog's collar around his neck, along with gold armor complemented by a gray chain that secures his white cape. He also dons black fingerless gloves, which are covered by his gold wrist guards.
Personality[]
Damian appears cordial at first glance. However, this demeanor is merely a façade that conceals a more sadistic and ruthless personality. He did not hesitate to destroy Tsubasa and Yu's Beys, preventing them from competing in the final of the World Championship and sending them to the hospital. He also toyed with Julian Konzern, making him admit his weakness on live television, only for Damian to laugh at his plight.
Damian seems to harbor a god complex, seeing himself as chosen by fate to excel in Beyblade, yet he also admits to simply following orders. He appears to lack the ability to grasp concepts such as fun and seems ignorant about the outside world—his unusual pallor and his surprise at getting dirty serve as proof. He is capable of taking initiative as well and successfully manipulated Julian to ensure he would use his left rotation.
After his battle and subsequent defeat against Gingka Hagane, following Faust's revelation, Damian's mentality appears to have shifted. He speaks of taking revenge against Gingka, despite previously stating he participated in Beyblade solely because he was ordered to. Moreover, he becomes more unstable, as seen during the street battle and in his fight with Kyoya, where he panicked and descended into madness. Instead of trying to grasp the true essence of Beyblade, like Julian did earlier with Dashan, he desperately clung to his belief of being the chosen one. This behavior suggests he might have undergone some form of brainwashing by Ziggurat or feared being discarded by the doctor. At the end of the fight, Damian completely broke down, unable to comprehend how Kyoya could defeat him despite having received a special arrangement.
Biography[]
Unlike the rest of his teammates, not much is known about Damian's past prior to his time as a member of Team Star Breaker. It's later revealed in a flashback Damian was recruited by Dr. Ziggurat into HD Academy at a young age. He partook in the Doctor's Arrangement experiments to artificially enhance his skills as a blader. This process resulted in the creation of Hades Kerbecs BD145DS, a special bey designed for Damian alone. At some point, Damian underwent the highest level of arrangement which allowed his skills to match the likes of powerful bladers such as Gingka Hagane. He eventually became a member of Team Star Breaker, the American representative team in the Beyblade World Championship, alongside Jack and Zeo Abyss.
Damian is first shown receiving an arrangement in Episode 36. He makes his first true appearance in the following episode where he finishes his arrangement and is dispatched by Dr. Ziggurat to help Zeo Abyss capture Ryuga, a powerful blader who had escaped the Hades City. Though unable to find Ryuga, Damian runs into Tsubasa Otori and Yu Tendo whom he recognizes as members of Team GanGan Galaxy, the Japanese team competing in the Beyblade World Championships. He introduces himself and asks the duo if he can test his newly completed Hades Kerbecs in battle. Damian easily defeats Otori and Tendo offscreen, damaging their beys and leaving both bladers severely injured. Gingka Hagane, the leader of Team GanGan Galaxy, subsequently vows revenge on Damian and Team Star Breaker.
In Episode 38, Damian and his teammate Jack make their first appearance at the Beyblade World Championships, facing off against the European Team Excalibur for a spot in the finals After watching Jack effortlessly defeat Klaus, Damian challenges Excalibur's leader Julian Konzern in Episode 39. He taunts and offers to battle Julian twice, knowing that the latter's Gravity Destroyer AD145WD can spin in two directions. Julian accepts and the two begin their first battle with Gravity Destroyer spinning to the right. Damian is able to quickly defeat Konzern using his special move Hades Drive. During the second battle where Destroyer is spinning to the left, Damian switches his Kerbecs to "Boost Mode" which allows him to survive Destroyer's gravity attacks. He also begins taunting Julian saying how he has "no real power" and that he will take the latter's pride away. As Julian is pushed back and begs for mercy, Damian relishes in his opponent's anguish. Julian's teammates Sophie and Klaus intervene by launching their beys to protect Destroyer from Kerbecs, disqualifying them from the tournament. The three Excalibur members combine their special moves but Damian counters by using his own: Hades Gate. Kerbecs is able to defeat all three of its opponents. Damian urges his defeated opponent into admitting he is weak and laughs manically when Julian eventually does.
In Episode 41, Damian, Jack, and his third teammate Zeo appear at the finals of the Beyblade World Championships to face off against Team GanGan Galaxy. He watches as Zeo narrowly defeats Masamune Kadoya in the first round and is shocked when Jack is defeated by GanGan Galaxy's replacement member Ryuga. During the final match of the tournament, Damian faces off against Gingka and his Galaxy Pegagus WF105R2F. In Episode 44, he uses his special move Hades Gate to pull Gingka and Pegagus into the underworld itself. After using chains to restrain his opponent, Damian tells Gingka that the "bey spirit" is nothing compared to the Arrangement and that his sole purpose for battling is to win. Despite his best efforts, he is unable to break Gingka who is able to escape Kerbecs' underworld facade. The two opponents both use their special moves and clash with each other in an explosive finish. When the dust clears, Kerbecs is revealed to be the one that stopped spinning and Gingka's team is crowned the winner of the Beyblade World Championships. Damian is left speechless after his defeat and promptly faints.
In Episode 45, Damian crashes Team GanGan Galaxy's celebration party alongside Dr. Ziggurat, his team Starbreaker teammates, Team Garcia, and Julian Konzern. Dr. Ziggurat reveals his true intentions were not to win the World Championship but to collect data on the world's most powerful bladers to create the perfect bey: Twisted Tempo. He also reveals that Tempo and its Arrangement-enhanced owner Faust were created to generate Spiral Force, a type of energy produced by Beyblades. Damian then watches as the Spiral Force is used to level an entire forest. He and the bladers alligned with Hades Inc. prevent Gingka and his allies from following a departing Ziggurat. A massive fight ensues with Damian and Jack pursuing Gingka through the streets of New York. Damian uses his special move Hades Gate but is stopped by Kyoya Tategami, the leader of the African Team Wildfang. He and Jack subsequently retreat back to Hades City. At the end of Episode 46, Hades City takes flight and Ziggurat tasks Damian, Jack, and Julian with protecting the Spiral Core from any of Gingka's allies who made it onboard.
In Episode 49, Damian confronts Gingka, Masamume, and Kyoya with the intention of stopping them from getting any further. Kyoya creates an opening for Gingka and Masmune to escape while challenging Damian to a battle. It is revealed that Damian received another arrangement based on Gingka's data following the World Championships. He insults Kyoya by stating how he was now more powerful than Gingka, someone Kyoya had never defeated. Despite his attempts to end the battle quickly with Hades Drive, Kyoya and his Rock Leone 145WB are able to survive which forces Damian to use Hades Gate. He uses his chains to torment his opponents but Kyoya's grit allows him to break free of the underworld illusion. Suddenly, Damian was in a vision of the African savannah and his Kerbecs was pushed back by Leone. He begins to break down and uses his anger to bring the underworld illusion back. The two opponents then use their special moves and the battle ends with Leone shattering Kerbecs' fusion wheel, causing the latter to stop spinning. Again unable to mentally process his defeat, Damian faints after repeating "I don't get it!". Kyoya comments that he won't "get it" as long as he is on a leash.
Damian makes a final non-speaking cameo appearance in the Metal Masters finale episode 51 where is seen on a rescue boat along with Jack and other HD academy bladers after Hades City fell into the ocean.
Trivia[]
- Damian is the only member of Team StarBreaker and the only major character from Metal Masters that didn't come back in Metal Fury.
- When a picture with the silhouette of potential legendary bladers was shown, one of them looked like him, but it turned out he wasn't one of them.
- His manga counterpart was redeemed and even became friend with Gingka, making some cameo appearances in the story, despite having stolen people's life force. However, in the manga, Damian didn't use the arrangement and realized the error of his ways after his defeat. He also directly gave back all the souls he stole, this sacrificing his bey.
- His initials are H and D, similar to the name of H.D. Academy.
- He is the only character in the anime to own a Beyblade representing a constellation that doesn't exist anymore: the defunct constellation of Cerberus is now part of Hercules.
- He shares a resemblance to Dr. Ziggurat, prompting some fans to theorize they were related.
- His first name might be a reference to Damien Thorn from The Omen movies, or to the antichrist in general.
