~ Danforth Keeton III to Gaunt.
Danforth Keeton III, also known as Buster is a supporting antagonist in the Castle Rock Saga of the Stephen King Mythos.
He is the gambling-addicted mayor of Castle Rock. Although he was already an unpleasant person, he became a destructive psychopath after being manipulated by Leland Gaunt.
Dan first presented himself as an arrogant egotist who was above the law. He would become angry towards officers at the beginning of the story after receiving a ticket, ranting about how he "made" the town. Another great example of his arrogance and egotism is when he took money from the tax payers in order to settle some of his gambling debts.
One of Dan's most notable qualities is his paranoia. He described his belief that certain police officers were out to "get" him, which would lead to conflict between him and Deputy Norris Ridgewick. Other examples include his belief that people would replace mirrors with identical ones that someone could see through, believing that his wife slept with whomever wrote him tickets, and pulling out a gun whenever he was taken off guard.
Dan is a very aggressive and unpleasant person, becoming violent whenever someone got on his bad side. This was first seen with his physical confrontations Deputy Ridgewick, and later with his verbal abuse towards his wife. Dan would become especially erratic whenever someone called him Buster. However; he would demonstrate remorse for his violent actions, as seen when he believed that he deserved to die after killing his wife.
Biography[]
Dan is first seen confronting Deputy Ridgewick in his office after receiving a ticket, their confrontation being broken up by Sheriff Pangborn. He would later be seen at a bar filling out paperwork, where he becomes angry at Hugh Preist's drunken behavior.
Dan is later seen being confronted by Pangborn while he (Dan) was gambling on horse raced. He revealed to the sheriff that he had taken more than twenty grand in order to settle some unpaid gambling debt, but he assured the sheriff that he would pay it all back. Soon after this, Dan had his first encounter with Gaunt, where he purchased the "Winning Ticket" game that simulated horse races, allowing the player to determine the winner of the next race. While using it at home, he was verbally abusive towards his wife when she tried asking him why he wasn't at work.
After playing his game, he came out to find his house covered in pink slips that had been placed there by Nettie Cobb. This caused him to become paranoid of the local policeman, retreating to Gaunt's residence and hiding in his attic with a gun. Although he believed that he should murder one of the officers in order to settle the situation, Gaunt talked him out of doing it, taking his gun away and pouring him a drink.
Dan is seen some time later ramming his car into Ridgewick's car, blaming the deputy for leaving all the pink slips in his home. The two broke out into a violent confrontation, which ended with himself being overpowered by the sheriff and handcuffed to his car. The sheriff left soon after this, and when he did Dan was able to overpower the deputy and make it back to his home. Once home, he honked the car until his wife came to break him free, although he was very physical with her. He grabbed one of her arms while she fetched him his tools because he believed that she would call the police on him. After breaking free, he turned the tools on her and accused her of sleeping with the deputy after putting pink slips all over their home. She accidentally called him Buster, which led him to beat her to death with a hammer.
He is later seen washing away the blood and talking with Gaunt over the phone, describing his remorse for killing his wife. Soon after this, he is seen planting explosives outside of Father Meehan's church, which were later detonated. Gaunt met him here, and became violent with Dan after he overheard Dan praying to God. Dan was seen again throwing another explosive into a shop, and then finally during his attempt to murder the sheriff. After firing at the sheriff, he came out of Gaunt's home (his apparent hiding place) and threatened everyone with explosives that were tied to his body. After being talked down by the sheriff, he turned on Gaunt, throwing himself onto Gaunt and detonating the explosives. Unfortunately for Dan, Gaunt would come out unharmed.

Trivia[]
Keeton was blamed for a mouse trap sent to Deputy Ridgewick, which caused the Deputy to mess with Dan after his arrest.
For whatever reason, Dan cannot stand when citizens of Castle Rock refer to him as "Buster". It was stated by Nettie Cobb that people often did it behind his back.
After Gaunt walked out of the explosion caused by Dan, he threw deputy Ridgewick the pair of handcuffs that had been on Dan's arms since his arrest. They were scorching hot, and so after the deputy caught them he immediately threw them to the ground.
Keeton’s role in the film was changed as the secondary antagonist, due to Ace Merrill not being in the movie.
