“ | You know how to read a rap sheet, don't you? Five arrests, three convictions... no guilty pleas. Two years ago, I got popped in Jersey. Missing semi-trailer full of microwaves. A sergeant questions me with a cigar. I didn't talk then, either. | „ |
~ Magadan refusing to admit his guilt in Max Greevey's murder. |
Daniel Magadan Jr. is the main antagonist of the Law & Order episode "Confession". He is a petty criminal who is responsible for the murder of NYPD Sergeant Max Greevey.
He was portrayed by Vyto Ruginis.
Early life[]
Magadan was a petty criminal who had been arrested five times for crimes involving theft and fraud, with three convictions. His father, Daniel Magadan Sr., tried to get him to give up his life of crime by getting him a job as a construction worker, but the younger Magadan used that opportunity to pull another scam - helping his corrupt boss, Morgan Stern, embezzle from the company in return for a cut of the profits.
When building inspector Bill Janklow found out about the conspiracy, Magadan silenced him at Stern's behest by throwing him off a roof to his death. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office investigated the murder and convened a grand jury to indict Stern for murder and racketeering. By coincidence, Magadan's father was made the grand jury's foreman, and told his son that NYPD Homicide Sergeant Max Greevey was going to testify. The younger Magadan then decided to shut Greevey up.
"Confession"[]
Magadan stalks Greevey to his house and confronts him, threatening to hurt his wife and children unless he cancelled his testimony. When Greevey refuses, Magadan loses his temper and shoots Greevey in the face and back, killing him right in front of his family. He then flees the scene before the police arrive.
Greevey's partner, Detective Mike Logan, becomes obsessed with finding the killer, and finds out that Magadan has a girlfriend who works for the DMV whom he used to find Greevey's address. He confronts Magadan's father and persuades him to reveal his son's location by promising not to hurt him. When he finds the younger Magadan, however, he flies into a rage and holds a gun to his head, threatening to kill him unless he confesses to Greevey's murder. Terrified, Magadan confesses to killing Greevey, and Logan regains control of himself and arrests him.
Logan takes Magadan back to his precinct, where his new partner, Sergeant Phil Cerreta, interrogates the confessed murderer. Magadan nonchalantly admits to murdering Greevey, but at his arraignment, his lawyer argues that his confession was coerced and is therefore inadmissible as evidence. While Magadan is held without bail, the confession becomes a serious problem for the case against him. Assistant District Attorney Paul Robinette questions Magadan in jail, but he claims that he only told Logan what he wanted to hear so he wouldn't kill him.
Despite Executive Assistant District Attorney Ben Stone's best efforts, the judge rules Magadan's confession inadmissible. During the trial, however, Stone gets the confession readmitted by manipulating Magadan's lawyer into getting a witness to mention it in front of the jury. With his confession back in play, Magadan is found guilty of first-degree murder, and is sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.
