John McMullen, also known as Dante The Great, is the titular character and one of the two main antagonists (alongside his cloak) of the Dante The Great segment from the 2014 found footage horror anthology film V/H/S: Viral.
He is portrayed by Justin Welborn, who also portrayed as Carter Daniels in The Final Destination, Curt Hamill in the 2010 Remake of The Crazies, Kyle Grubbin in Dance of the Dead, Carl Lennon in Justified and Mr. Nyx in the 2016 film Siren.
History[]
The segment shows a woman named "Scarlett Kay" being interviewed by a Detective named Hughes. Hughes tells her what her occupation is which she says she is a Assistant for a Magician named "Dante The Great". She explains that she found tapes that Dante made in his dressing room and she says that there is a secret compartment and the tapes is behind a breaker box. She says that Dante recorded everything and he always needed an audience. More footages of Interviews are shown which are explained by Theater Critics, Other Magicians, and Dante's Mother "Carol McMullen". They say that 2 years ago, Dante was actually a man named "John McMullen" who lived in a trailer park in Atlanta. He would do his tricks with his friends in the neighborhood and they say that he was really good at it. They say that Dante came in possession of a cloak that no one knows where he got the cloak but some rumors say that it was owned by a magician named Harry Houdini which the cloak frightened him so he got rid of the cloak.
It then shows Dante using a paper (paper possibly reads a chant on it) and activating the cloak. He would then put the cloak on and try out the powers by first grabbing a rabbit out of his cloak and putting the rabbit back inside the cloak, onto a table with tools. They say that the cloak has changed his life forever and that his shows that he made was completely exclusive. Dante would also use his powers to pick people's pockets, lift people from the air and teleport people to different countries and they say that his illusions were on a different level than anyone else. It would show Dante being interviewed and he says that no one will find his magic tricks. It then shows Dante in his work room and he uses his powers to snap the rabbit's neck and rip open its skin. He would then try testing more of his powers which then causes his work room to be set on fire, causing firefighters to arrive and put the fire out.
Later, Dante records himself trying to do more of his tricks in his second work room, but they seem to not work and it starts making him angry. He then hears whispering coming from the cloak, which Dante then learns that the cloak needs Human Sacrifices to be able to work. He then records himself giving the cloak to one of his assistants taking a shower, says his chant to activate the cloak and he watches the cloak kill the assistant and devour her. He would then record himself doing another sacrifice by putting the cloak on another one of his assistants sleeping on a bed, after she had sex with him. He says his chant again and watches the cloak throw her around the room and devour her. Hughes asks Scarlett what was her first impression when she first met Dante, which she says that she was auditioning for his show and she was really nervous, saying he was her idol, though Dante in his interview says that he and Scarlett was meant to work and be great together. Scarlett says that she also wanted to be a Magician and wanted to work with him because she thought that she would get to learn how to do the tricks and illusions that he does, but no one else on the crew knew how he did anything and says that it was frustrating. Scarlett says that she had an ex-boyfriend named "Clay" which Hughes asks her when was the last time she met with him and what was her relationship with her and clay. She says that clay had a temper and was abusive to her, but she says that they were okay.
Scarlett said that she and Dante became really close and together, as it shows Dante making her know one of his tricks, which is spawning a rope to tie his hands. It shows Scarlett entering Dante's second work room and looking into his camera as it shows an interview with Detective Hughes as he says that the tapes that Scarlett brought in indicated several violent murders that incriminated Dante in the disappearance of the two assistants that he killed. Scarlett says that she wasn't aware that Dante was going to confront her ex-boyfriend Clay, as it shows footage of Dante kidnapping Clay and killing him by using his powers to break his hand, his leg and snap his neck as he then lays the cloak on clay's dead body to make the cloak devour him. In the interview with Dante, he explains that his shows are something that will reveal from the darkness great light and that people would come through doorways that they didn't even know were there and see something unbelievable, but they have to believe it because it is right there in front of their eyes. Suddenly a team of SWAT Members shows up at Dante's Stage where he is being interviewed at and they arrest him since earlier they went inside his place and investigated it, finding his tapes and all the stuff he had. Scarlett explains that when Dante has his cloak on, he is different, but Hughes tells her that its nothing magical and that he is just a sociopath. The SWAT team then put Dante in their cop car, which suddenly Dante disappears from the car and hand cuffs the members hand to the steering wheel. Scarlett tells Hughes that she knows that what he does is not illusions but they're magic, but as Hughes tells her that there is no such thing as magic, she gets sucked into the chair and disappears, leaving Hughes confused. Dante pulls Scarlett out of his cloak and throws her to the floor, telling her that his first rule was to never tell how his tricks are done. Scarlett tells him that she knows that he murdered the assistants but Dante tells her that it wasn't him and when she asks him what is it, he says that its Real Magic.
The SWAT Team then appears to arrest Dante but he throws Scarlett and starts using his powers to kill the SWAT team. He uses his powers to break their bones, snap their necks, rip open their stomachs and controls one of them by levitating them to the air and controlling their arm to shoot at four of the SWAT Members. He then throws one of the SWAT Members onto a board with spikes and as two SWAT Members arrive, he covers in his cloak but it appears that he gets shot. As one of the members check to see if Dante is dead, he sees that his partner has been switched into Dante's clothes and he gets shot by Dante as he switched to the members partner. Scarlett picks up his cloak and puts it on, taking the rifle from Dante. Dante and Scarlett then fights over for the cloak, which they both get thrown to the stage and Dante manages to get the cloak back. Dante activates the cloak and as he is about to kill Scarlett, she then uses the trick that he taught her and ties his legs into the cloak and he gets pulled inside the cloak and devoured by the cloak. In the interviews, Hughes and others are asked on if they know where Dante is now and where is his cloak. Hughes says that he and the police department are still trying to find him while others say that he is somewhere out there and is planning for his comeback and they all say that they don't know where the cloak is at now. It then shows Scarlett outside of her house and she puts the cloak inside a trash can and sets the cloak on fire. Later, it shows Scarlett in her room and her closet door creaks open by itself. She goes to check who is in her closet, which when opening the door, she finds the the cloak hung up on the door and she gets shocked that the cloak is still alive. Suddenly, two pair of hands then comes out of the cloak and kills Scarlett off-screen as the segment ends.
