~ Dante explaining his view on humanity. |
“ | Hahahaha... Yes, that's it... So that's the true nature of humans! | „ |
~ Dante expressing his excitement upon seeing Asta gone berserk. |
Dante Zogratis is a major antagonist in the Black Clover franchise. He is one of the main antagonists of the second saga.
He is the second eldest of Zogratis Siblings and the leading member of the Dark Triad, being the host of the Devil known as Lucifero. Dante is known for his sadistic and cruel nature, as well as being a believer that evil is the embodiment in all of mankind. He is one of Asta's most hated foes, due to actions against his friends.
He is voiced by Rikiya Koyama in Japanese, who has also voiced Kagetane Hiruko, Giovanni in Pokémon Origins, Kiritsugu Emiya, Kamen Rider Bujin Gaim in Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Gaim & Wizard: The Fateful Sengoku Movie Battle, Paradox Roidmude in Kamen Rider Drive: Surprise Future and Oma Zi-O in Kamen Rider Zi-O and by Patrick Seitz in the English dub, who has also voiced Adamas and Kagemasa Toda in Record of Ragnarok, Dio Brando in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Enji Todoroki/Endeavor in My Hero Academia, and Kunzite in the ViZ dub of Sailor Moon.
Appearance[]
Dante is a tall and slim middle-aged man with balck hair and green eyes. Unlike his brother, he is more sophisticated with his appearance, having his hair combed and his facial hair trimmed evenly. Though like his brother, he possesses a mark on his forehead that stretches across. He also wears a crown with red jewels implemented into it.
Like his brother and sister, he wears an outfit similar to theirs where he wears a black jacket with a fur collar, possessing the Spade Kingdom symbol on the back. He also wears belts around his waist, as well as one that goes over his shoulder.
In his youth, Dante wore the standard military uniform from his kingdom. He did not have a mark or facial hair back then.
Personality[]
Dante is a sadistic man who presents himself as a calm-minded but twisted individual. Rarely does he ever display any sign of emotion and often acts with his mind checked, even in the worst situations. He is very manipulating and cunning as he does whatever he can to do what he wants.
Dante lives under the belief that evil is the true embodiment of humanity and that the world is too dull to see it. Due to this, he enjoys being called evil and encourages others to embrace the evil nature like him, believing that evil is the only emotion that matters most.
Dante has also shown to have somewhat of a lustful obsession for women, as he was impressed with Vanessa's magic being able to alter fate and thus wanted her to be his bride. He was also impressed with Grey's arcane magic, declaring her to be his bride as well. However, he appears to think very little of women as nothing more but subjects to his amusement as he was very displeased when she used her magic to save Asta's life, disgusted by the notion that she would use her magic for anyone but him.
Similar to his brother, Dante admires the strong and has little tolerance for those that are weak. He gains excitement from battling those that are strong, as shown when he battles the likes of Asta and Yami, in which he is very impressed with their combat and magic.
History[]
Background[]
Dante originally started from being a soldier from the Spade Kingdom army, who went hollowed and became tired over life itself, with nothing he did could satisfy his own malice. He later raised a rebellion and founded the Dark Triad, killing nearly the whole House Grinberryall (except Yuno), the original rulers of the Spade Kingdom, and took over power. With their deal with the Devils, the Dark Triad created tyrannical rule inside the kingdom and had hostile relations with neighboring kingdoms.
Heart Kingdom Joint Struggle Arc[]
After the war against the Elf Tribe and the death of Zagred, with the Clover Kingdom being severely weakened, the Spade Kingdom seized the chance to invade neighboring kingdoms, starting with the Diamond Kingdom and followed by Heart & Clover Kingdoms.
Six months later, the Dark Triad planned to take their next move. Dante went to search for Yami Sukehiro to seize his Dark Magic ability, and he arrived in the headquarters of the Magic Knight squad of Black Bull, which was now moved into the Spade Kingdom's own territory, with Asta, Vanessa, Henry, Yuno and Grey were inside, whilst Finral teleported himself to pick Yami up from the capital.
At the time, Yami was absent due to participating a conference with other captains, thus Dante decided to seize his squad members instead. The Black Bulls desperately try to defend themselves against Dante's Gravity Magic, during which he becomes interested in Vanessa's ability to manipulate fate and plans to take possession of her. When Asta tries to fight him in his Black form, Dante recognizes he is using the power of a Devil. He easily evades Asta's attacks until Gauche uses his magic to make an army of mirror copies that swarm him. Dante counterattacks by unleashing 50% of his Devil's power and easily forces Asta to the ground with intense gravity. He then lectures Asta on his ideology about how humanity's true nature is evil, but Asta rejects his views and continues to resist. He then accesses 60% of his Devil's power and uses his magic to crush a mass of stone into a sword which impales Gauche, planning on bringing out Asta's darkest side to the surface. His plan succeeds and causes Asta to lose control of his Black form and transform into a feral devil-like version of it he uses to attack Dante. While dodging Asta's wild attacks, Dante asks Lucifero which devil the former is contracted with. Lucifero is unable to identify Asta's devil but dismisses it as a low-ranking one. In his new form, Asta is able to reach Dante and cut him, infuriating the latter. Dante decides to stop playing around and defeats Asta by using his Gravity Magic to increase his physical strength and pummel him into unconsciousness. Right after, he discovers Grey is another Arcane Stage Mage when she is able to heal Gauche and he plans to take possession of both her and Vanessa, but before he can do anything, Yami arrives and takes over the fight.
Yami proves to be an even match for Dante and eventually manages to land slash across his chest. However, Dante then unveils his natural Body Magic which he uses it to heal himself and reveals his plan to combine Yami and William Vangence's magics together to create the Tree of Qliphoth, which the Dark Triad plan to use to open the gate to the Underworld and unleash the Devils into the world. Dante continues to heal any wound Yami manages to inflict with his Body Magic and decides to unleash the full 80% of his Devil's power he can access and attacks with miniature black holes, pressuring Yami until he manages to land a powerful attack that completely obliterates Dante's torso. However, even that isn't enough to kill him and Dante regenerates his body and transforms it into a monstrous giant before renewing his attacks. Admitting he can't defeat Dante, Yami calls out to a recovered Asta and the two team up to fight Dante. Knowing Asta's Anti-Magic can nullify his healing capability, Dante focuses his attacks on him and keeps him at bay. Reaching his limits, Asta makes a bargain with his Devil to increase the use of his Anti-Magic for a brief period and manages to cut off one of Dante's arms. However, Dante uses his Body Magic to grow extra limbs and reshapes rubble into giant stone swords to intensify his attacks. Nearing the end of his time limit, Asta, joined by Yami, rush Dante, who knocks all away of Asta's Anti-Magic Weapons, leaving unarmed by the time he reaches the main body. Just before Asta's Anti-Magic runs out, Yami blows apart Dante's body again and passes him his Katana, which Asta uses infuses with Anti-Magic to land a finishing blow. The slash dispels Dante's Magic, and he falls to the ground unconscious and defeated with a large gash cut through his torso. The victory doesn't last long as Zenon ambushes the Black Bulls, kidnapping Yami and rescuing his unconscious brother. Zenon brings both back to the Spade Kingdom where Moris treats and modifies Dante, increasing his already great power even further.
Spade Kingdom Raid Arc[]
With both Yami and William captured, the Dark Triad now has everything they need to perform the Qlipoth ritual. To prevent this, the Clover Kingdom sends a team of their strongest magic knights before the week-long ritual can completed, and rescue the captive Yami, William and Lolopechka. However, Moris is able to extract the inherited knowledge Lolopechka possess and use it to modify the ritual, adding his own power to it to accelerate it and activate it three days ahead of schedule. The magic knights split up to take down the Dark Triad, who are essential for maintaining the ritual, and prevent them from completing it. Dante is confronted by Jack and Nacht and the form quickly lands an attack with his Severing Magic, but Dante unveils his improved regeneration and boasts that only Anti-Magic can hurt him, and then uses his Gravity Magic to pin his opponents. When he tries to attack his seemingly helpless opponents, Nacht reveals himself to be another Devil-possessed who is strong enough to resist his magic and Jack is able to use his Severing Magic's adaptability to slash apart Dante's gravity and injure him despite his body magic. They prove to be equally matched for the time; however, the Qlipoth Ritual reaches the first level of completion and opens the gate to the first level of the Underworld. With the first gate open, the devils inhabiting it are released, including the Qlipoth Devils Lilith and Nahamah, and the Dark Triad are given access to 100% of his Devil's granted power. While Nacht distracts Lilith and Nahamah, Jack stays behind to fight Dante, but his new power allows his regeneration to steadily outpace the wounds Jack inflicts despite his magic's adaptions.
Soon Jack reaches his limit, and Dante prepares to kill him, but Magna and Zora arrive to protect him. Dante immediately sense both are far too weak to fight him and arrogantly challenges them to attack him. Magna answers his challenge with a fireball that seemingly fails to hurt him, but Dante discovers that it created a magic chain connecting to his chest. Magna reveals he used a spell that links their total magic power together then divides it equally among them, bridging the massive gap between their strengths. With his magic power stolen, Dante loses access to his Devil Power and is attacked by an empower Magna. Dante retaliates with gravity strengthened punches and begins exchanging blows with Magna. As the fight goes on, Dante is able to heal himself with his Body Magic while Magna takes on damage, but the latter continues to fight on despite his wounds. Eventually the battle depletes all of their magic, something Dante has never experienced before in his life, and he is forced to keep fighting an unrelenting Magna without magic and he is knocked out in an exchange of punches. With his defeat, Dante's section of the Qlipoth ritual deactivates, slowing down the ritual.
After the magic knights leave, Dante regains consciousness and starts recovering magic, but it is so depleted he loses control of his Body Magic and becomes deformed and disfigured. He refuses to admit defeat and tries to crawl after his enemies, but Jack returns and finishes him off to keep him from tainting Magna's victory. After the Dark Triad, Moris, and Lucifero are defeated, Lucius recovers his sibling's corpses. Lucius later performs a ceremony to incorporate his siblings magics into himself, giving him the power to create, revive, and modify human beings to use in his plan to rebuild the human race in his image.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Body magic: Dante's magic allows him to manipulate his body. This magic can let him repair and shape his body into his very own likening, thus gaining him access to transformations. In combination with his devil powers, Dante also possesses high regenerative abilities as a result, being able to regenerate any wounds and missing parts in mere seconds. His magic also prevents him from dying from natural causes as his body cannot age nor deteriorate overtime, overall making him practically immortal. His healing capability is further improved after undergoing modification treatment from Moris.
- Gravity magic: As the name suggests, Dante's magic allows him to control and manipulate gravity at his will. He can use this magic to levitate himself from the ground and lift large objects through this control. The magic also allows him to immobilize his target's movements and shape various materials into a singular object. At its strongest level, the gravity can become powerful enough to distort space and created miniature black holes.
Abilities[]
- Devil possession: Like his siblings, Dante is a host of a high-ranking devil, though in his case, he is the host of the devil, Lucifero. As a result, Dante's magic power is immense and has access a portion the devil's power granted by the Devil. He can normally draw up to 80% of the devil's power, but with 50% and 60% of the power, he is capable of distorting space and nullifying magic entirely. The more power he draws from, the more powerful he becomes. When the gate to the underworld opens, Dante can draw in up to 100% of this power.
- Immense Magic Power: Even without his devil contract, Dante has an incredible natural mana reserve that was so great, he had never run out of magic in a fight before facing Magna. Even after having all his magic depleted, he quickly began to regain some after his defeat against Magna, though it left him unable to properly control it.
- Martial arts: Dante has shown to be skilled in physical combat, both in the forms of hand-to-hand and swordsmanship. His swordsmanship rivals with that of the Black Bull's captain, Yami Sukehiro while he is capable of fighting Asta in hand-to-hand combat.
