The Dark Chao are antagonists in the Sonic X comic book series. Based on a breed of Chao from the Sonic Adventure 2 game series, the comics reimagine them as clones of Cheese created by Dr. Eggman as part of his world domination scheme. Originally presenting them as harmless pets, he made them go berserk to blackmail the world into accepting his rule.

Physiology

Having been created from Cheese's DNA, the Dark Chao's base form looks identical to a neutral Chao. When influenced by a signal of a certain frequency, they change appearance drastically, turning black and acquiring sharper teeth.

Behavior

In their base form, Dark Chao are as docile as normal ones, but when influenced by Eggman's signal, they become bloodthirsty monsters who attack everyone in their sight. Another thing that differentiates them from the real Chao is that they always say "choa" instead of "chao". Though they speak a different language from the real Chao, they still recognize Cheese as their "mother".

History

When Eggman had Cheese captive, he cut off a portion of their wing and used it to create clones of the Chao. They were completely harmless unless Eggman used a signal of a certain frequency on them, turning them evil and destructive. Eggman advertised his Chao as pets to the citizens of Station Square, and over the course of a month, pretty much every household had at least one Chao. Sonic and his friends suspected some foul play, but didn't realize what exactly as going on until Eggman transmitted the signal, making the Dark Chao reveal their true forms and go on a rampage across Station Square, attacking citizens indiscriminately. Sonic and his friends tried to save the city and fight the monsters off, but they had the upper hand. At the same time, Eggman arrived, demanding to be proclaimed emperor of Earth in return for ridding the city of Dark Chao. The heroes, however, had also received reinforcements in the form of Tikal, Chaos and their army of Chao. In the meantime, Chuck Thorndyke managed to crack Eggman's signal and find a frequency that would bring the Dark Chao back to normal. He handed Tails the remote callibrated to emit said signal, who then passed it on to Sonic, who then ran around the city and turned all Dark Chao docile. After this, Tikal and Chaos left the Earth and took all the Chao with them.
