The Dark Elves also known as the Druchii are a villainous faction from the Warhammer Fantasy/Warhammer Old World tabletop wargames and its related media. They are the descendants, cousins and archenemies of the High Elves/Asur, the guardians of Ulthuan.
Hailing from the dark land of Naggaroth, they are the exiled elven supporters/servants of the Witch King Malekith. Once a proud and noble species, the Dark Elves are now a corrupt, debased and fickle people. Twisted by dark magics and the land around them, the Dark Elves fight not only to survive, but to reclaim Ulthuan whilst inflicting as much pain and misery upon as possible.
Outside of the original tabletop games, the Dark Elves have also appeared in a number of Warhammer computer games. Before the release of Total War Warhammer, they appeared in the Warhammer Mark of Chaos expansion Battle March.
Overview[]
Cruel, sadistic elves descended from exiles that left Ulthuan in the wake of a civil war. Their leader Malekith is actually the original leader of the losing faction and has kept himself alive for thousands of years through diabolical methods. Their entire existence is based around raiding for goods and slaves, and they have nasty habits like making sails and cloaks from the hides of their enemy races like dwarfs and humans. Unlike the Drow from Dungeons & Dragons they neither have dark skin nor do they live underground (except for one city) and they seem to take some inspiration from the Melniboneans of Michael Moorcock's Elric Saga. Dark Elves tends to be the evil counterpart to the High Elves, often fielding similar units.

Trivia[]
- The Dark Elves are the Fantasy counterpart to the Warhammer 40K Dark Eldar/Drukhari. The two factions are virtually identical being long-lived mortal species who embody hedonism and sadism. Both also have ties to the Chaos God Slaanesh.
- When the Warhammer Fantasy tabletop game ended with the End Times event, fans were extremely critical of the High Elf, Dark Elf conflict resolution. Given the well-known hatred between the two factions, not to mention the centuries of fighting between them, fans felt that the story spat upon the long-established lore by ignoring the franchise’s history to resolve the storyline quickly.
