“ | I, as a descendant of the priests, know about not only Esteria, but the past and even the beginning of Ys in detail. But look at this world, those that rule, those who suffer by it, those that live by greed, those that die because of it, this is the result of those who wanted peace. Humans are like that. So what if the legendary brave soul wards off some evils, nothing will change. But if they were to be enchanted by the evils and brought into the fold, it would bring them true peace wouldn't it? There's no place for stale legends in this world anymore. | „ |
~ Dark Fact's speech in episode four of the anime. |
Dark Fact is the main antagonist of the "Ys I" portion of the 1989-1993 adaptation of the Ys anime.
Appearance[]
Dark Fact has blue hair, blue hands with clawed fingers, and horns. He also wears a headress and a black cloak with armor under it.
Biography[]
Prior to the events of the story, Dark Fact was destinied to follow the path set by his ancestor and five other priests of Ys, but chose to go down a path of darkness. This was related to silver called Cleria that brought the people of Ys a nightmare. He gathered it to use its power for a kingdom fo evil.
Dalles reports to Dark Fact, who was in the middle of reading on a throne, about Adol, believed to be the brave soul, procuring Volume Tovah following Sarah's petrification. Dark Fact tells him not to worry as Sarah can no longer guide him and the prophcy is just a meaningless legend a few priests believe him.
As a descendant of the priests, Dark Fact not only knew of Esteria, but also the past of Ys to its beginning. Dark Fact states that those who ruled and those who suffered by it, and those who died because they lived with greed, which was a result of those who desired peace.
Dark Fact believed that nothing can change if Adol warded off some evil. He also asks if people were enchanted by evil and placed in the fold it could bring true peace. Fact states that there is no longer a world for stale legends.
Just then Dalles learns from a bat that Adol has entered the abandoned mines of Rastin. Dalles reassures Dark Fact that Vagullion will kill him. But Dark Fact is disinterested in Adol and just is bothered by his actions in the mines. Dalles then realised someone else took over the petrified Sarah's role to guide him.
After Adol raided the mine and claimed the third book of Ys, Dark Fact begins to realise something about him when he realises that the goddesses who onced ruled Ys are awakening. Fact then realises that is is all according to legend. Soon he greets Adol via astral projection to invite Adol to a deserted temple (Knowing that Pictimos will attack him on sight there.) in the forest where the Book of Messa is to alone test his abillity as a brave soul, if Adol succeeds he can keep the book, an invite Adol accepts. Dark Fact reveals that he has Volume Fact on his person and Adol cannot make his wish to solve the mystery come true. When Adol asks about Luta, Dark Fact terminates the projection.
After Adol's gear gets turned into Cleria gear, Dalles pays a visit to Dark Fact, having learned Feena, who was imprisoned in the shrine, was one of the goddesses with Dark realising she shut out her memory of the past and that her sister is also around. With both goddesses awakening, Dalles asks Dark Fact why he revealed the location of Messa to Adol.
Dark Fact claims Adol will die in the temple. Dalles had been aware he had been leading the evil army, but still is descended from the priests and cannot be taken lightly.
Dark Fact also knows that Dalles has been extracting monsters from Cleria. Not having any regards for potential misgivings Dalles had about his plan for Adol, Dark Fact proceeds to say prove he can change the legend.
When Dalles asks what the humans can do if Adol shows up and the goddesses awaken, Dark Fact tells him that lazy humans can serve evil or die by it and must prepare their army for an attack on Esteria.
When Feena and Reah reunite as goddesses, Dalles reports to Dark Fact that they've regained their memories after having them locked away on their own free will. Dark explains that mankind never knew how to use the Black Pearl and were not ready for its power. It was also the source of Cleria and the wealth of Ys.
Dalles also states that great light can cast powerful shadows and that the goddesses are certainly aware of this. Dark Fact tells him the evil power exceeds the goddesses and must prove it to humans. Dalles promptly uses his magic to to capture the goddesses, but Reah used a force field on her sister to save her from capture.
Reah was then sent to the Tower of Rado to be locked up where she cannot do anything without her sister. When Dalles asks Dark Fact on how to deal with Adol, Dogi, and Goban when they broke into the tower. Dark responds by asking him to leave the trio alone as there are fewer men protecting Minea.
Dark Fact tells him that humans are simple people who go by the rational of putting their beliefs to what they desired, but Dark Fact does not believe they can change their destiny. Later when Adol, Dogi, and Goban fight monsters as a result of an ambush from them, Dalles watches from a mystical orb where he asks Dark Fact if this was his intent to let them go as he can use his magic to pick them off all at once.
Dark Fact refuses as he wants them to leave the three alone as he decided their fate in spite of Dalles's protests. Following Adol being warped to a mirror to Luta's cell, Dalles tells Fact that they are prepared to attack and asks why Adol was warped there.
As the army was getting ready for an attack on Minea Dalles tells Fact that they need his word and Dark Fact permits it. Fact then sends his army to slaughter the people of Minea. The attack begins with a man getting stabbed to death.
Dack Fact explains to Dalles that if his heart had been pure, the old Ys would have been revived or so Dark believed as a child. Dark Fact then explains what's happening now and finds human stupidity to be an infinite flaw. Dark's father was also devoted to the family duty passed down his line of the legendary priests. This came to an end when he was killed by selfish humans.
Dark felt the agony of his father's betrayal and prayed for the people to come to their senses and realise how dangerous the silver was. If the times called for the silver's power, then the silver will be the graves of the humans.
When Fact unleashes an outburst, Dalles was unfazed by this as Fact calls the luster of Cleria the symbol of the world government evil will create. As the people of Minea fight off the monsters and Adol is guided by Feena to save her sister, Dalles asks Dark Fact what to do with Adol as he cannot permit him to live.
Dark Fact asks him why he was so worried about him, Dalles tells him that he is concerned about what Dark Fact is becoming. Fact views him as a fool for this. After Dalles is defeated, Reah and Feena escort Dogi, Goban, and Luta to his quarters via teleportation. Dark Fact had been expecting their arrival as he was going to ask the goddesses why they gave the humans of Ys the Black Pearl even though they were not ready for its power.
Fact explains that it did not begin from humans he found foolish or the Black Pearl, but the goddesses. Reah said it was as he said, but she and her sister's only option had been to save the world after what happened. Dark Fact tells them it was too late for that as the world is in the sway of evil and that it is the true destiny.
Goban counters this claim as the goddesses intended the power to be for the good of Ys. Even if man took an incorrect route, it was not the fault of the goddesses. Luta agreed as they can correct their path regardless of difficulty or length. Dark Fact tells them to do as they like before warping to Adol. Dogi tries to stop him by throwing a knife, but failed. At the top of the tower, Dark Fact warps in front of Adol and commends him for how far he climbed, but will meet the end of his adventure here.
After Dark draws his sword, Adol asks why he was evil. Fact does not care about being descended from the priests and views the legend of Ys as too silly and wasted on humans. As their fight continues, Dark fact calls mankind incapable of creating a utopia and views them as thieves and murderers driven by their desires.
Dark also asks Adol for the reason the legend was protected for mankind. Adol acknowledges that while humans may be foolish, but no matter how dark the situation is, there will always be a tomorrow as not all desires are bad.
Dark Fact knocks him away and launches projectiles at him, destroying his cleria shield in the process. Adol's prowess impresses Dark Fact. When the monsters attacking Minea die as a result of Feena and Reah tapping into the Black Pearl, Dark Fact drops his sword and asks Adol to kill him as the former's body ceased to be his when he signed a contract with evil so he will not have to live on as a servant of darkness that haunts his future, believing he sought to be saved by the brave soul more than anyone else.
Dark Fact tells Adol that his destiny will immediatley begin, when Adol refuses, Dark Fact launches a fireball to make him do so. The sorcerer accepts his demise as his body fades away, leaving behind Volume Fact and his cloak. Adol reassures Feena she will need to be afraid of monsters anymore.
When Adol brings the Books of Ys to the Shrine of Toal, he his greeted by the spirit of Dark Fact who explains that seven hundred years ago, the priests made some sort of mistake and sent Ys to the heavens and the evil monsters will exist as long as the Black Pearl remains in one piece. The evil power will increase and the earth will be driven to despair.
Dark Fact then gives Adol the powers of the priests needed to defeat the evil that plagues Ys, but also warns him that these powers can also turn people evil. Dark Fact also tells him that once his powers and the goddesses' wishes become one, there will be true peace.
Dark Fact also shows Adol a vision of the demons lead by a disguised Velagunder on horseback taking Lillia to be a sacrifice. Adol asks Fact what he needs to do. being released form the curse of his physical form and given himself over the tides of destiny, Dark Fact tells him that he will unfold his own destiny and tells him to fight as the sacred power is within him.
