I am not Jenning anymore! I am now one of the Dark Overlords of the Universe!
~ The Dark Overlord possessing Dr. Jenning.
There will be no escape!
~ The Dark Overlord in his true form.

The Dark Overlord is the main antagonist of the 1986 film adaptation of Howard the Duck. One of the Dark Overlords of the Universe, he was accidentally summoned to Earth, which he plans to use as a breeding ground for his kin.

He was portrayed by Jeffrey Jones while possessing Dr. Jenning, who also played Reverend Steenwyck in Sleepy Hollow, Mr. Spike in Stay Tuned and Dick Richardson in Fallout 2. In his true form, he was voiced by an uncredited Brian Steele.

Appearance[]

The Dark Overlord is a massive scorpion-like alien with a gaping maw of teeth as well as multiple appendages. From his two claws he can open a grappling tentacle.

Biography[]

The Dark Overlord still here!
~ Dr. Jenning.

The Dark Overlord and his kin were once powerful demonic tyrants that ruled the universe. That was until they were bested in the First Cosmic War and banished to the Nexus of Sominus, a distant region of space.

From a test with a laser spectroscope, Howard the Duck is warped from his home planet of Duckworld and onto Earth. The scientists attempt to reverse the spectroscope, believing that will send Howard back. However, the machine malfunctions and the Dark Overlord is beamed down instead, taking possession of Dr. Walter Jenning to hide his hideous self from the human race.

At a diner, the Dark Overlord, whilst inside Jenning's body, tells Howard and his human friend Beverly his plan to reactivate the spectroscope and summon down the remaining Dark Overlords to Earth so they can reclaim their title as the universe's leaders. During a clash with some bikers, the Dark Overlord blasts them with energy and trashes the diner. He claims the spectroscope's code key from Howard and takes Beverly away, planning to use her as a host for another Dark Overlord.

Along the way to the lab, the Dark Overlord shows his brute powers by killing a police cop simply for addressing him incorrectly as well as a street of cars. With help from Phil Blumburtt, Howard reaches the lab just as the Dark Overlord begins activating the spectroscope. Howard charges the Dark Overlord with an experimental neutron disintegrator, forcing him out of Jenning's body. He snatches Howard with a tentacle from his palm to prevent him from escaping, zapping Beverly and Phil with energy to prevent them from interfering.

With help from Jenning, back in control of his body, Howard cuts through the tentacle with a buzzsaw and reactivates the neutron disintegrator, destroying the Dark Overlord. He then destroys the spectroscope, preventing the other Dark Overlords from reaching Earth at the cost of returning to his homeworld.

Abilities, Powers and Traits[]

The Dark Overlord of the Universe is a powerful being, who disposes of many powers: while in a host, the Dark Overlord possess pyrokinesis and telekinesis; in his original form, he's a gargantuan monster with incredible strength, speed, and stamina, able to project plasma beams from his tail, with many prehensile tentacles, sharp teeth, and claws.

The Dark Overlords only exists for destruction and domination, eager to establish their dominion over the whole universe once again.
