Satan (サタン, Satan), previously known as Lucifer, is the main antagonist of Madou Monogatari 2, and of some games in its puzzle battle spin-off series Puyo Puyo. In the English localization, his name was changed to Dark Prince to avoid any religious references.
He is known as the Noble of Darkness (闇の貴公子, Yami no Kikōshi), able to transform into any shape he desires. He often chooses the form of a black eagle, which he uses to fly and survey the world of mortals. He enjoys tormenting those who dare to utter cursed dark spells.
Satan is currently looking for a woman worthy to be his bride. She must be beautiful and a powerful magic user. So far, only Arle Nadja has fulfilled both of these requirements.
In Japanese, he was originally voiced by Masamitsu "Moo" Niitani, the producer of the Madou Monogatari series. Nowadays he is voiced by Chikara Ousaka. In English, he was voiced by Xander Mobus.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
Lucifer was a warrior chosen by the gods to lead the holy army against humanity in the battle of the Apocalypse, as they had decided that humanity had reached the limits of their usefulness as a species, and sought to wipe them out. From the angels and the gods' perspective, killing all humans was the morally right thing to do, and the humans were the evil ones for trying to resist that.
In the war, Lucifer's main opponent was a mage named Lilith, the guardian of humankind. Though human civilization eventually collapsed, Lilith managed to obtain the Seraphim Orb from Phantom God, which she used to rebuild the universe, merging the world of humans, monsters as well as other dimensions, creating the Madou World and temporarily freeing humanity from its fate of destruction. It is unknown if Lilith outsmarted Lucifer or if he intentionally let her escape and obtain the orb out of compassion, but the latter is more likely, as Lilith would insultingly be branded with the nickname "Satan's wife".
Since Lucifer had failed his mission, he incurred the gods' wrath and was stripped of his wings and banished from the heavens forever. Losing his name, he became known as Satan. Though he was now confined to a life in the mortal realm, Satan wasn't really bothered by it. His godly powers made him nigh undefeatable, with even the most powerful of mortals fearing him and his title. At one point, Satan met Carbuncle, who he took in as a pet, and became extremely fond of.
Madou Monogatari R[]
Satan discovers that his pet Carbuncle has been kidnapped by the count. In a rage, he flies towards his residence, and breaks into the top floor. There, he notices a young Rulue, who had also been kidnapped, nearly about to be killed by the count. He drains the count's powers and lets Rulue finish the job. He embraces Carbuncle and learns that Rulue had helped keep him safe. He reveals to Rulue that he keeps Carbuncle to give as a gift to his future wife, and flies her home as thanks. This caused Rulue to fall deeply in love with Satan, and she would dedicate the rest of her life to trying to marry him.
Madou Monogatari 2[]
Arle first encounters Satan as she explores some ruins in search of a rare gemstone. At the very bottom of the ruins, Satan congratulates Arle, and reveals that he had set up the entire dungeon as a trial for a woman worthy enough to be his betrothed. He promises to love her until the world ends, and tries to pull her in for a passionate kiss. Arle, disgusted by his proposal, call him a perverted old man, and reveals that she's only there to obtain Satan's gemstone. Satan assumes she's trying to kill his dear pet Carbuncle, and infuriated, attempts to kill her.
Arle wins and knocks Satan out, but once she learns that the gemstone she's looking for is embed into the small creature's forehead, she gives up on the gem and beckons for Carbuncle to come with her. Carbuncle, not sensing any hostility from Arle, joins her in her adventure, and they proceed on their journey to enroll Arle in the magic school of her dreams.
Post Madou Monogatari 123[]
Satan played some part in Lilith's miracle that resulted in Arle, the only living creature free from the Creator's chains of fate, being the only one able to oppose him. The creator was a being above all gods who created the natural order that decides that all life must eventually come to an end to be recreated. She enters battle with him in order to save her universe from the keeper of the cycle. Time grounded to a halt as their struggle lasted 500 years. In the end, the universe returned to nothingness and the Creator was killed, putting an end to the laws of end and rebirth set in place by him.
Though Satan was now free from the creator's grasp, with Arle missing and presumed dead, everything he knew was lost to him. He proceeded to sit alone with his thoughts for the next five hundred years. He eventually made up his mind and decided to use his powers to recreate the world he had watched over for millennia and many of the creatures he had met, including making a new Arle. In Satan's new universe no one aged, leaving Arle permanently at 16 years old.
With the characters he recreated Satan started endless new adventures where he would set fun challenges for Arle to overcome, shown in the events of the Puyo series, most Disc Station spin-offs, and the Sega Saturn Madou Monogatari.
Puyo Puyo[]
Looking to cause some chaos, Satan decides to summon a huge number of the jelly like monsters known as Puyo to his universe in order to amuse himself. Their numbers were so great that they began to be used in a combat sport known as Puyo Pop/Puyo Hell. Satan quickly mastered the game, and rose to the top of the rankings, winning several world championships. Satan was possibly the best Puyo Pop player in the world, before Arle defeats him.
Madou Monogatari (Sega Saturn)[]
Though his world was built to be a peaceful paradise, as time passed Satan slowly began to feel a certain emptiness towards his creations. His shenanigans no longer kept him entertained, and he began to question the value of a world where everything was no more than a replica from a past time. In order to quench his boredom, Satan explored the rift between dimensions outside of his own world, and discovers the dimensional overlord, Yog-Sothoth, alongside the hero from another dimension, Ragnus, who was severely injured in his recent battle against Yog-Sothoth. He rescues Ragnus and removes all curses from his body. On a whim, he also unleashed Yog-Sothoth into the world, who begins to consume it with madness.
As Arle and Rulue travel the land in order to bring peace back to their world, Satan watches them from the shadows and assists them on several occasions. Once the battle against Yog-Sothoth is over, Satan admits to Ragnus that he could have easily killed Yog-Sothoth whenever he wanted, but he wanted to see if his creations were strong enough to deal with it on their own. After seeing their struggle and will to live, Satan feels a rekindled sense of passion for his own universe. He promises to send Ragnus back to his world, giving him a dimensional/time travelling pendant for him to fulfill his destiny and protect Lilith's old universe from Rune Lord over a thousand years in the past.
Though Ragnus is initially upset that Satan knew about everything and still chose not to intervene, he still thanks him with a smile, agreeing to come back to visit this manufactured perfect world should he ever need a break from the burden of being a hero. He complements Satan on his universe's beauty, and reassures him that though it might be fake, it still contains everything Satan could wish for.
Puyo Puyo~n[]
Satan had incorrectly assumed that Arle had sacrificed herself to defeat the creator. In reality, her soul was left shattered, floating aimlessly in the darkness of the void. The five hundred years of isolation while Satan contemplated what to do next drove her to madness. Once she witnessed Satan's new Puyo world and noticed she had been replaced by a cheap copy, she planned her revenge against the world she once fought to save as Doppelganger Arle.
Doppel managed to escape and enter Satan's world through a magical box that was actually a portal to the void. Full of hatred for this new version of herself that had stolen her very existence, Doppel schemed to kill Arle and take her pet, Carbuncle, effectively replacing her in the new world. She brainwashed Satan and used him to kidnap Carbuncle, luring Arle to her circus.
In the end, Doppel was defeated by new Arle, creating a paradox in the world. The rules of the universe deleted Doppel out of existence, killing her. With the original Arle's death, Satan was now the only one who was aware that the universe had been previously destroyed and that this entire world was fake.
Other versions[]
It is sometimes shown that Satan may have been watching Arle ever since she was a kid.
In the Game Gear remake of Madou Monogatari A, he replaces Owlbear as the final boss, meeting Arle before she even enrolls in kindergarten.
In Madou Monogatari Hanamaru Daiyouchienji, Arle visits him in one of his mansions, asking for his sacred orb. He treats her to a banquet and a show performed by his personal fan club, and gives her the orb as a gift.
In Madou Monogatari I (Genesis) he is unnamed, and his shadow appears before Arle in a dream, claiming to want to test her abilities. If Arle has obtained all three sacred accessories, he later crashes her graduation test and shows up as a secret boss after Mamono. He introduces himself as the Noble of Darkness and defeats Camus. After Arle defeats Satan, he, impressed by her strength, promises to meet her again, and heals Camus before disappearing.
Since these events contradict both future and past games, these versions of Satan are up to speculation.
Sega Timeline[]
After the company behind the original Madou and Puyo Puyo games went bankrupt, Sega acquired the rights to the franchise. They eventually brought back Satan and many other Madou characters, however Sega does not consider any of the games before Puyo Pop Fever to be canon, so this Satan is a completely different character.
In Puyo Puyo 7, Satan is summoned by Ecolo to Ringo's world. He becomes one of the 7 legendary fighters that must be defeated in order for causality to collapse. Ecolo manipulates Ringo and her friends into defeating Satan and the other 6 fighters, creating a giant wormhole that would bury the entire universe in puyo, effectively destroying it. Satan assists Ringo and saves Dark Arle from Ecolo's corruption. In the end, the universe is saved, and Satan is sent back to his world alongside Schezo Wegey, Rulue, and Arle.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Immortality: Satan cannot die of old age. It is unknown if he can be killed by any sort of magic. The Madou Timeline revealed that he was the only one able to survive the destruction of the universe, most likely due to the fact that he was not a creation of Lilith's universe, but a being from outside of it.
- Shapeshifting: Satan is able to transform into any shape he wishes. This is possibly how he turns into many of the disguises he uses in some games.
- Camouflage: By simply wearing a mask and using his magic, Satan can make himself completely unrecognizable by everyone around him. The effectiveness of this spell is one of the reasons he uses his shapeshifting powers so rarely.
- Universe Creation: Satan was able to recreate the entire universe from an empty void using his powers. It is unknown if this is a power he trained himself to use, or if he had the assistance of something like the Seraphim Orb.
- Near omniscience: His position as the keeper of the universe means that he is constantly aware of any irregularities that happen in it. He kept a close eye from the very beginning of Yog-Sothoth's invasion in order to see how Arle and her friends would respond to an incoming disaster.
- Near omnipotence: There is never a problem that Satan can't solve. He is able to do almost anything with his powers. He can travel to other universes as he pleases, can remove any curse and can overpower even extremely dangerous threats that come from outside his world. Despite all this, Doppelganger Arle was able to attack him by surprise and mind control him, possibly due to her nature as a Super Organism. This implies that Satan might have the same weakness as the Creator.

“ | What I feel for Arle isn't quite love... I'm not sure how to explain it... it's something similar to nostalgia. I still don't know what this is, or why I feel this way. I've lived for far, far too long, but I only ask for a bit of time. I feel like I'm so close to realizing something extremely important. | „ |
