The Dark Urge (also known as Durge) is one of the main protagonists (as well as one of the overarching antagonists) of the 2023 fantasy RPG video game Baldur's Gate III and the main antagonist of its prequel novel Blood in Baldur's Gate.
He's a mysterious amnesiac individual that suffers from a "violent urge" which they can either embrace or resist, depending on the player's choice. It is later revealed that he's a Bhaalspawn, being a child of Bhaal, the Lord of Murder and was his Chosen, being one of the masterminds behind the Cult of the Absolute, alongside Lord Enver Gortash. Before his scheme could be succeeded, he was betrayed by his subordinate and kin-sister, Orin the Red, who wanted to take over his position as the Chosen of Bhaal. This leads to the Urge's amnesia.
Depending on the player's choices, The Dark Urge can either be a remorseful and tragic atoner who rejects his violet urges, or be the malevolent and sadistic cold-hearted monster he was in his past life.
He is voiced by Neil Roberts.
Appearance[]
Uniquely for an Origin character (barring the Custom Origin Tav), the player can change their appearance and pick any class for them.
The canon appearance and class for the Dark Urge however, is a tall male white dragonborn storm sorcerer with bright red eyes.
Personality[]
In his past life, as the child of Bhaal, the Dark Urge was a cold, sadistic, and cruel individual with a strong devotion to the Lord of Murder. In contrast to his kin-sister, Orin however, the Urge was more of a calm and calculated killer, who believed in killing for killing's sake and preferred practical and simple killings, and showed disdain for extravagant or needlessly creative killings. The Urge was also shown to be a clever and intelligent mastermind as he was the one who formed the Cult of the Absolute, alongside Lord Gortash, with the intention on betraying the cult and stealing the Crown of Karsus so he could use it to create a army of soulless mind flayers to exterminate all of life.
After gaining his amnesia due to the betrayal of Orin, the Urge becomes a conflicted and complex character, as he struggles to remember the past life he had. Despite his amnesia, he still had the violet urge to commit murder, but he became more barbaric and brutal in his murders, something that can either gravely horrified him or takes relish in the murders he caused.
