The Darkness is the main antagonist of the The Amazing World of Gumball episode "The Downer." It is a manifestation of Gumball's bad mood throughout the episode that begins consuming the world within his mind with negativity.
Appearance[]
It is an amorphous, shadowy force of nature that is pitch black in color. It disperses slightly into blotches towards its edges, and it is capable of throwing web-like formations of itself attached to long, tendril-like appendages. At its peak, when it engulfs everything, the darkness appears simply as an all-consuming blackness.
Personality[]
The Darkness is a mental manifestation of Gumball's gloomy attitude consuming him entirely throughout the episode. As such, it relishes in everything related to nihilism, despair, and hopelessness, and begins to create changes within Elmore that reflect this to constrict Gumball within his head. Examples include changing a crosswalk sign to say "No escape," transforming "Joyful Burger" into "Misery Burger," and altering a cereal brand to "Captain Crud." It also modifies paintings within the Watterson household, changing one of a whimssical unicorn into a flaming, hellish horse, and distorting an image of the Wattersons to make them appear ghastly and frightened.
The Darkness briefly possesses Gumball at various points, making him insist that he doesn't care about anything or anyone, and that he hates his town along with "puppies, cupcakes and rainbows." It also makes everyone, including his family, invisible to him under the false belief that they are unwanted. Physically, it approaches Gumball very aggressively while making magma-like gurgling sounds and hissing at him as it begins to engulf everything.
