The Darkness Devil, also known as the Devil of Darkness, is a major antagonist in the manga Chainsaw Man, being the overarching antagonist of the International Assassins arc.
A mysterious being that resided in Hell, it was then revealed that it is one of the formidable Primal Devils that exists since possibly the beginning of time and was also revealed to be one of the devils that Santa Claus made a deal with in order to defeat Makima once and for all.
Appearance[]
The Darkness Devil is made out of various bodies with two human bodies acting as their legs and three other human bodies acting as their torso and a head looks similar to that of a pterodactyl with curvy, pointy horns. One of the human bodies has its arms standing outwards holding out what seems to be a dark cape.
Biography[]
The Darkness Devil makes their first appearance with a very dark, very eerie entrance walking pass through a bunch of astronauts praying while their lower half are cut from them pointing upward. While Aki Hayakawa, Quanxi, and the rest of the crew joining forces to try to escape Hell preparing to fight against the demon, a random frog appears out of nowhere doing it's typical ribbit noise, the Darkness Devil blitz right past the whole gang ripping off all of their arms. While that took place, when their arms were up in the air separated from their bodies, it strangely formed a spelling that says "Makima".
Afterwards, Tolka's master, using Tolka as a puppet to communicate through him, made a proposition with the Devil of Darkness for fetching Denji to him to grant her the power to kill Makima. They accept and gives her a sample of his flesh to eat, making Tolka's master even far greater in power.
Darkness Devil ends up slaughtering Kusakabe, Beam, Quanxi, Tomoaki, Pingtsi, Long, and maimed Power after they felt they tried to rebel against him. Violence Fiend removed his mask, ended up transforming into a more buffed form. But it was to no avail as Darkness Devil impaled him numerously in what it seems to be very huge bullet-like holes. This angered Denji, despite his injuries and lack of blood he went head on charging at him for a saw attack, which didn't faze the Devil of Darkness at all. He brushed off the attack and had Denji's body literally twisted out of shape. Violence Fiend gets back up and grows an arm out of his mouth to attempt to get a good hit at the devious manipulative devil, only to get impaled yet again by a sword summoned by the Devil of Darkness.
Hearing that Denji and the other people that got trapped in the Department Store were sent to Hell, Makima then sends one of her demon subordinates, the Spider Devil Princi, into Hell in order to fight against Darkness Devil for a while and as Princi was defeated as she was unable to withstand the power of the Darkness Devil, Makima then orders Princi to bring her to Hell. During her trip to Hell, Makima then fights with the Darkness Devil as she manages to overpower them for a while with just pointing her finger which wounded the devil itself despite Makima's right arm was contorted in exchange. It was not enough as a Primal Fear the Darkness Devil could have still killed her and attempted to. When making the deal with the Hell Devil in order to send all of the demon hunters and Denji back to their world, Makima was nearly impaled by the Darkness Devil with it's sword but manages to escape in the end.
Trivia[]
- It is possible for the several humanoid heads on the body to represent the "See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil" saying.
- It is suspected that the fourth head represents "Do No Evil."
- They seem to be powerful enough to stop Devil's regeneration, like Angel Devil's for example, but for some reason Power was hit with many painful shots but returned back to normal. It is possible Makima had a hand in returning Power to normal though.
- Given how Denji managed to greatly harm the Darkness powered Santa Claus with "the power of light" by setting himself on fire and attacking her, one great weakness that could at least hinder the power of darkness by a lot is light and light sources such as fire. It would not be enough to kill the Darkness Devil as it is a Primal Fear, but it could be enough to stop it or render some abilities null for a while.
- This makes it a very missed opportunity that Long, the fire breathing fiend, didn't use her fire to at least weaken the Devil which would have been very helpful. Not only did the other scared and anxious fiends, humans and devils head into battle and did as much as they can, but the other member of her group, Pingsti, used her information grabbing powers to alert others about the primal fears, even while anxious, making it strange Long didn't act. It could be possible that this was done to demonstrate Makima's own power of how she can greatly damage a primal fear on her own along with the fact Long is a pretty slow character or that Fujimoto forgot.
- The traits of the Darkness Devil's form can be seen in Santa Claus' Devil transformation, such as the many arms, faces, the darkened parts of the body with lighter parts and the same horns.
- It has also been assumed by some fans that the Darkness Devil also represents the fear of the unknown, but this could be questionable given it's own ability of granting greater knowledge. At the very least, one aspect of the devil is the fear of what hides within the darkness.
- It is possible that children are the ones who are more influenced by the fear of this Devil, because children are afraid of the dark more often.
- This is reinforced symbolically by Power, one of the most childish and immature of the cast, being the most scared after her encounter with the Darkness Devil, contracting full-blown PTSD and being scared of sleeping and even blinking.
- The speech the Darkness Devil speaks in is just a bunch of distorted Japanese text and letters flipped over each other or put upside down to look like nonsensical alien speech, or incomprehensible cosmic entity-like speech.
- His ways of attacking are also just as incomprehensible, since every time he attacks, a "frog" appears and then "croaks" and only then do the characters lose their arms.
