“ | Take it easy, Ecliptor. I just happened to be in the neighborhood. Ah ha ha ha. Ah ha ha ha ha ha. | „ |
~ Darkonda's first words after Ecliptor cryptically told him to go away. |
Darkonda is a major antagonist in the Power Rangers in Space.
He is an bounty hunter and an agent under the service of the United Alliance of Evil, as well as Dark Specter. He is the rival of Ecliptor and the archenemy of Andros, the Red Space Ranger, as he is responsible for abducting his sister, Karone, shaping her into the villainous Astronema.
He was voiced by Steve Kramer.
Personality[]
Darkonda is a viciously cruel, sadistic, remorseless, disloyal, arrogant, and manipulative backstabber who'll use others to his advantage. He uses rather unscrupulous and dirty tactics that'll benefit his chances of both achieving victory and obtaining as much power as he can get, such as forcibly fusing with Ecliptor to one-up the Space Rangers and took a great amount of sadistic pleasure over cybernetically implanting Astronema and Ecliptor back to evil forcibly.
As a psychopath, he was utterly depraved in his series of actions that involved infecting innocent people and outright gloats on kidnapping Karone, being responsible for who she is today with glee, even saying it was "one of his fine accomplishments", which such things are exactly why Ecliptor doesn't trust but eventually despised him. He's proven that, despite being capable of getting along with others, it dies down to the point of using anyone to his own advantage or otherwise the mutualism doesn't hold up. While loyal to Dark Specter, at first, Darkonda begins plotting to go behind his back and destroy him to rule the universe for himself, demonstrating his ambitious demeanor. He's also petty, as he holds a grudge against Ecliptor for outwitting him.
In spite of his own capacity, Darkonda often comes out as a coward in the end. This is best shown when he resorts to using Ecliptor as a shield to protect himself and as Yartu in disguise, tries to make a quick flee and leave Coralizer to do his dirty work.
Biography[]
Past[]
While there's nothing much on the rest of his background, Darkonda was known for his involvement with willingly or participating in numerous assassinations and wars throughout his career as a ruthless bounty hunter. He came in contact with Dark Specter not too long ago and eventually became an agent for him.
At some point, Darkonda was tasked with kidnapping a child under Dark Specter's orders under the desire to mold a successor, the child who was targeted was a young girl named Karone. One day when she and her brother, Andros, were playing outside, Darkonda took the chance to sneak behind Karone and immediately snatched her away from the fields, took off with her, and left Andros all alone, traumatically desperate to find her as years passed by. He even admitted later on in the present that he wanted the chance to kill him then, but never got to that part. Upon bringing Karone to Dark Specter, he and the latter eventually had her memories alternated to where she believed her family as killed by the Power Rangers and then have her under Ecliptor's care where she was trained to become the Princess of Evil she is.
It was heavily implied he participated in the war with KO-35 orchestrated by Dark Specter and in order to drive KO-35's population to a corner, he caused an infestation through parasitic and deadly space insects called "Barillian Bugs", which their sting is so deadly, the process of being bitten by a Barillian Bug causes the victim to go through a painful mutation of becoming a fully-grown Barillian Bug monster. It's said that a huge swarm of them infected most of the population and either they died or turned into Barillian Bugs were their fate, as a result, KO-35 became an isolated planet where little left of what remained, and dozens of survivors were driven from their home to start a refugee camp on another planet. Darkonda was never seen or heard of until years came by.
Working with Astronema[]
Darkonda made his debut in the present teleporting behind Darkcliptor and his Quatrons in the middle of his ambush against the Space Rangers, which the latter was unpleased with his presence where they bickered and threatened Darkonda to not go anyway near Astronema, he proceeded to mock him and his strategy as "predictable". Once Ecliptor and his troops start fighting the Rangers, Darkonda takes the chance to unleash a Barillian Bug and have it sting one of the Rangers to turn into a Barillian Bug monster, Carlos Vallerte, the Black Space Ranger falls victim to the bite and forces the Rangers to retreat, which he disappears the moment before Ecliptor could call him out. As Carlos becomes a Barillian Bug monster through a painful transformation process, he starts to go after the rest of the team, Cassie would later follow the same fate upon being stung.
Later, Darkonda found his way into the Dark Fortress and introduced himself to Astronema, claiming his position as an assassin, then offering his services to her by demonstrating his ordeal to bring in the Rangers back as Barillian Bug monsters. He would then confront Andros and TJ in a chase, luring them throughout the forest to have them walk into his trap, which after using his speed, Darkonda proceeds to unleash another Barillian Bug to sting the two Rangers before avoiding its sting and later captured it with Andros confirming his suspicions. He comes back into the fortress to convince Astronema to let in his services by mentioning the Rangers going after the antidote for the Barillian Bug sting. Ambushing the Rangers in KO-35, he attacks them in the hospital in an attempt to steal and destroy the antidote before TJ made his escape with it.
He then fights Andros alone and tries to kill him in the hospital's basement, however, Andros takes the liberty to use his Battlizer to one-hit Darkonda before the rest of the team arrives. He then destroys the last vial of the antidote in hopes of ensuring there's no hope of curing the Barillian Bug sting in the future, which he proceeds to unleash another Barillian Bug, full monster size, and enlarged him to attack the Rangers. They eventually defeated it through the Astro Megazord. He returns to the fortress and gets Astronema interested in him by coming up with a plan to separate Andros from his team.
Darkonda was seen spying on the Space Rangers setting up the Interstellar Scanner on the Planet Brokaya, before informing Astronema of his plan, he tries to manipulate her and convince the fact that Ecliptor isn't as useful but warns her that should Ecliptor overlook an oversight of the Rangers' search for Zordon, Dark Specter would destroy them. Convinced, Darkonda would be tasked with Ecliptor to destroy the scanner to prevent the Rangers' search for Zordon. Arriving on Brokaya, Darkonda blackmails Ecliptor with the intention of telling Astronema the truth about her and him in the past unless he cooperates his every demand, and proceeds to destroy the Interstellar Scanner immediately. They would soon fight the Space Rangers, only for Darkonda to stab Ecliptor from behind and forcibly but painfully fuse with him to absorb his powers, attempting to feign it as if Ecliptor perished in battle and later absorb Astronema's powers next.
Upon becoming Darkcliptor, he begins to overpower the Rangers, freezing Carlos, Ashley, and Cassie in Green Grid Ice, imprisoning them, and later delivering a heavy blow on T.J., causing him to become an amnesiac. Eventually, Andros and the amnesiac T.J. escaped Darkcliptor's grasp while the latter vanished with the three remaining but frozen Rangers. Keeping the frozen Rangers in a cave, Darkcliptor is confronted by a questioned Astronema, which he proceeds to lie about Ecliptor attacking him in battle and "captured" him, as he solely earned her approval. While ordered to destroy the three Rangers he captured, Darkonda protests as he still needs to go after Andros and T.J., saying only then would darkness befall them all. Darkcliptor sends a message to both Andros and T.J., forcing them to fight him again or he'll destroy their comrades in the process. Andros would arrive in Brokaya to personally go head-to-head with Darkcliptor, which he taunts that he would've been frozen too if not for T.J.'s intervention.
As he bested Andros, Darkcliptor took notice of the still-amnesiac T.J. morphing into the Blue Space Ranger and began targeting him. Attacking him easily, he tries to kill him with a single lightning strike, only for Andros to take the hit for T.J. and fall. Just before he could off Andros, T.J. remembers who he is and knocks him aside, properly fighting against the fused assassin. Managing to overwhelm him, Darkcliptor would end up having his fused state separating both Darkonda and Ecliptor, thus freeing Carlos, Ashley, and Cassie from their prisoned state. Shocked by the outcome, Darkonda forcibly fuses with Ecliptor again and is enlarged by the Satellasers, fighting the Rangers in their Astro Megazord and is greatly overwhelmed, upon de-fusing, he uses Ecliptor as a shield to block their incoming attack and shrunk back to normal. He promises to get back at the Rangers one way or another with Ecliptor badly damaged from the attack, which before vanishing, he still has use over Ecliptor.
Back in the fortress, Darkonda blackmails Ecliptor into lying to Astronema which would risk both their lives, provoking the latter to attack him whereas Astronema witnessed this, convinced by Darkonda's word and hereby declares him "his equal", continuing his services here.
Conflict with Andros and His agenda against the KO-35 survivors[]
When Andros discovers Darkonda is the one who kidnapped Karone, he heads to Planet Onyx to find him. Darkonda is seen in a bar saloon hanging out with fellow alien criminals and monsters, and then proceeds to walk upstairs to a room where he met a humanoid dealer, demanding him a vial of strength potion, and gives it to him, in actuality, is a fake one made by Ecliptor to get back at him. Darkonda joined in playing a card game with other alien criminals before Andros joined in as well, they began playing for a while before Darkonda took notice of some key cards belonging to Zordon's placed in the bet. When Andros got hold of the cards, Darkonda proceeded to chat with him, unaware of his identity, giving him information about KO-35 when given the cards, implying he knows everything about the place and how it became "deserted", while admitting the task of kidnapping Karone and tells him not to bother since "anything of value there" was already taken by him. When Andros questions her fate, Darkonda replies she's alive and well, not before noticing Andros' Morpher just as he is about to finish.
Quickly discovering Andros' identity, the two engage in a sword fight in the saloon, taunting the fact that should he be destroyed he'll never find Karone. As Andros takes back the key cards from him and escapes through his Galaxy Glider, he has his Quatron troopers go after him in their Velocifighters but eventually fail. He sent another message to Andros, demanding the cards should he want answers about Karone's whereabouts. Once the Space Rangers arrive, Darkonda drinks the "strength potion", becoming more powerful and faster than before, outmatching the Rangers with his might, and demanding the key cards. When refused, Darkonda goes all-out on them mercilessly. Eventually, things backfired on his end as the potion's effects took into action and caused Darkonda to overload, melting in the process before he vanished somewhere else.
Making his way into a parking lot, Darkonda suffers a major breakdown as Ecliptor comes out of the shadows, revealing to be the one who tampered with the "potion" before he teleported away. Enraged, Darkonda enlarged himself with a completely mutated, Super Form as he began destroying parts of Angel Grove using his laser eyes. Summoning the Astro Megazord, Darkonda continues rampaging while mercilessly fighting the Rangers, from that point, Darkonda proves to be too powerful to take down and damage the Astro Megazord further. A piece of him eventually falls out of him, creating another monster Mutantrus as they both outmatch the Astro Megazord. Eventually, the Space Rangers retreated to the Delta Megazord once the key cards were decoded, heading to the moon to find the Mega Vehicles. Once they got hold, Darkonda was faced against the Mega Voyager after almost destroying the Astro Megazord along with Alpha 6 and D.E.C.A., and easily outmatched him, finishing him off with Mega M3's missile attack.
However, Darkonda survived the assault since it's revealed he has nine lives. He was seen waiting for Ecliptor's arrival and offering a partnership between them, only for the latter to rightfully engage in combat with him for all the trouble he's done, which he proceeds with his plans to conquer the entire Earth, and then later rule the universe. In a secret laboratory, Darkonda has a hold of thousands of Crocotox eggs - poisonous, crocodile-like space creatures whose toxins are highly infectious - and plans to unleash an army of Crocotoxes onto Earth, which he sent a red Crotocox to poison the ocean, which led to many people gaining toxic spots all over their bodies. The Space Rangers were able to defeat the Crotocox and cure the people as a result, but out of the blue, Darkonda sends them a vestige message in the skies, declaring his conquest on Earth. When the Space Rangers later fall into Darkonda's trap in his laboratory, the latter explains that the Crocotox eggs are maturing and soon he'll have them unleashed onto Earth, then has two Crocotoxes destroy them. However, Zhane, the Silver Ranger, comes to their rescue and destroys his laboratory, which also destroys the eggs, foiling his plans once again and retreats.
Finding the remaining survivors of KO-35 inhabiting Centaur B and under orders by Dark Specter, Darkonda disguises himself as a KO-35 enforcer named Yartu to blend in with the rest and eventually have a monster called Coralizer, whose infectious foam causes people's body parts to become coral and at times, either put in a comatose state or still alive under the horrific experience, had infected numerous KO-35 survivors. To drive away suspicion, he recently captured the Space Rangers (minus Andros and Zhane) and imprisoned them, attempting to frame them for the attack. He reports to Dark Specter about capturing the Rangers and is ordered to destroy them while Astronema handles the other two. In a meeting with KO-35's councilors, he spoke to Kinwon, the leader, regarding the attack and accused the Rangers of being spies, he planted a vial of the same foam on Ashley and smashed it to the wall, exposing the coral effects. Just as he deems them "guilty", Kinwon tries to protest, only for Yartu to argue back about risking the survivors' state.
Kinwon argued that throwing them in would result in chaos amongst his people and warned Yartu that should he harm them, there would be consequences, which he reluctantly imprisoned them for the time being. Reassuring Dark Specter that he will have the Rangers destroyed, Kinwon discovers his true nature and has Coralizer infect him as well, turning parts of his body into coral, and has him set up when the Rangers try to escape, making the survivors turn against them even further. Just as he was about to have them destroyed, Andros and Zhane came in and revealed themselves, stopping the execution. He tries to accuse them as spies too and have them killed, however, none of the guards buy this without any solid proof and is outnumbered when no one is at his aid. To escape, Yartu calls upon Coralizer to infect the rest of the KO-35 survivors, already infecting several guards on the way as he tries to escape from the caverns. Zhane goes after him and once he catches up to him while fighting, Yartu reveals himself as Darkonda and tries to finish him off. Once Coralizer was destroyed, the effects from the coral were vanquished, curing the survivors as a result. Kinwon returns Zhane's saber to him and manages to defeat Darkonda, however, he teleports away before one of his lives is wasted.
Reverting Ecliptor and Astronema back into Evil[]
Later then, Darkonda is seen fighting Andros in the forest (which Ecliptor spied on them), the latter calling him out for kidnapping Karone, taunting him back upon claiming it as "one of his finest accomplishments" and the only regret he had was never killing him when he was still a child. Once Andros finds an opening to shoot and corner him, he forces him out answers of Karone's whereabouts, then taunts the fact that destroying him meant all is for nothing spitefully, and manages to escape when Andros lets his guard down when Ecliptor steps on a twig. As Andros left, Darkonda laughed maniacally and began planning a way to kill the Red Space Ranger, in which afterwards, Darkonda set up a death trap - attaching four lasers to nearby trees in a center - where Andros would die in that very spot, unaware Ecliptor was still watching him. Witnessing Andros taking on a group of Quatrons, Darkonda lures him into the very forest where they fought and tries to get him to fall into his trap. He offers a proposition that he'll tell him about Karone's whereabouts should he win, only for Andros to back out, knowing Darkonda's backstabbing nature. He proceeds to taunt him about how Karone no longer remembers him and further provokes him into going into his trap. This backfires when Ecliptor pushes Andros way to save his life and makes Darkonda fall into his own trap, killing him again and wasting one of his lives.
When Astronema discovers her past and realizes she is indeed Karone, Andros' sister, Darkonda reports this to Dark Specter, thinking with Andros knowing the truth, Astronema would defect from their army. While Dark Specter reassures his influence over her, Darkonda doubts it since Ecliptor's influence on her lessened his expectations, and begins plotting a way to ensure she stays that way. Later on, Darkonda spies on Astronema reminiscing her days as Karone, and he intends to take advantage of her identity crisis between being good or evil, only for Ecliptor to appear before him and rightfully call him out for the vile and dishonorable being he is, which the two begin fighting one another. He eventually overwhelms Ecliptor at first, and even tries to forcibly fuse with him for the third time, however, Ecliptor manages to resist thanks to his sheer will and begins to have the upper-hand at killing him again, though not for good. Crossing out one of his lives, he talks to Dark Specter about killing Astronema (including Ecliptor) but the latter isn't fully indulged with the idea, suggesting a loyalty test otherwise before leaving.
During the time Astronema helped the Space Rangers get to Zordon on Utopa in the Kurag Galaxy, Darkonda ambushed the Rangers once again with a group of Piranhatrons. He then goes after Andros and Astronema after defeating some of the Space Rangers, which he strikes Ecliptor from behind for letting them get away, deeming him a "traitor" and damaging him badly. Once Andros falls for Dark Specter's trap, Darkonda brings out the other captured Rangers and has the Piranhatrons rally him up, however, Astronema pins him down and makes a comeback right at him. Once given the order to kill one of the Space Rangers, Darkonda proceeds to choose from either of them before, all along, Astronema strikes back at him again and frees the other Rangers. He tries to attack Astronema again, only for Ecliptor to blast right at him, killing him again. Coming back again, Darkonda is seen with Dark Specter, this time he's in charge of the Dark Fortress temporarily until Astronema is brought back, frustrating Darkonda as he tends to a captured Ecliptor, blaming him for wasting many of his lives and wishes to have him and Astronema destroyed. Dark Specter, still refuses to allow it due to any further use over them, which Darkonda agrees for now and has Ecliptor taken away for "plans of his own".
Darkonda would be seen having Ecliptor forcibly restrained in his laboratory where he performs an "attitude adjustment" on him, as in, unethically performing surgical robotization by having him jointed with cybernetic implants, using a surgical drill to begin the process. He reports to Dark Specter, assuring him that Ecliptor's loyalty is permanent, and begins cooperating with the former's plans to destroy the Earth with a giant asteroid. When the Rangers tried to prevent the asteroid using detonators, Darkonda arrived with several Quatrons in their velocifighters, trying to stop them from intervening, and despite the Rangers' efforts, the detonators didn't work. When Astronema tries to stop the asteroid by relocating the process, the Cyborg Ecliptor captures her and through Darkonda, also begins grafting the same cybernetic implants onto her, reverting Karone back into becoming Astronema once again, this time, she is installed with a programming that overwritten and blocked her consciousness, forcibly becoming evil against her will. He's last seen witnessing the meteor about to directly hit the Earth, along with Cyborg Ecliptor.
Darkonda is seen tasking Elgar with guarding the fortress' whole perimeter to safeguard Astronema from being rescued again by the Space Rangers, expecting that he does his job. Once the Rangers discovered Astronema had been unethically grafted into a cyborg, they escaped for now. Darkonda is seen demanding Astronema that they need more strength to overtake the Space Rangers, unfortunately, his "attitude adjustment" on them backfired as they turned against him and Astronema reclaims the fortress hers. Darkonda justifies that without him, they would've been destroyed by Dark Specter, daring them to kill him the next time they met, taunting the fact that he has few more lives left while Astronema has "one". He teleported away to some parts of the universe unknown, though it is implied he lost two more of his lives after that.
After the Psycho Rangers were destroyed as Cyborg Astronema continued her work, Darkonda is recruited by her once again to capture the Space Rangers, setting up a trap where they are caught in the fortress' electrifying web-like net, one that nullifies the Rangers' powers. Darkonda is then tasked with capturing the Rangers, setting foot on Planet Forza, and commanding his Quatron troops to capture the Rangers and begin attacking them. Upon restraining them, he tries to have them killed for good, luckily, Zhane came to their rescue in his Galactic Rover, destroying his troops. While trying to strike both Zhane and his Galactic Rover despite having no vehicle of his own to joust, he only ends up meeting another death at the hands of Zhane once again, which only means Darkonda has only one life left and his days are truly numbered.
Final Battle and Death[]
During the United Alliance of Evil's universal conquest, where they began attacking particles and corners of the universe, planet by planet, Darkonda is seen participating in Astronema's forces of attacking the Earth, destroying buildings, causing mass destruction, and rallying up innocent people. He is then seen thrown to a corner by Andros' missiles, however, he is reverted back to normal by Ecliptor as the latter and Darkonda corner them, blasting lightning bolts at them and escaping, going after that later on.
At some point, Darkonda overheard about two super torpedos, capable of destroying even a single planet, by Astronema and decided to steal one of the Velocifighters to use the torpedos to destroy Dark Specter and later Astronema inside the fortress so he could take over the United Alliance of Evil and rule the universe, self-claiming to become "King Darkonda". On his way, he shoots Dark Specter from behind without the latter even knowing, causing him to explode in slow agony as he perishes. He then proceeds to kill Astronema and Ecliptor inside the fortress with one final torpedo, so he could take over and likely take advantage of the chaos happening across the universe.
Unfortunately, his own foolishness and backstabbing would be his downfall, as Dark Specter unexpectedly had enough energy left in him to go at Darkonda for treason and swallow him wholly, leaving the cowardly traitor screaming for his life one last time, destroying them both as a result and on Darkonda's part, it was for good since he was down to his last life. After his death, the United Alliance of Evil would seize the moment Zordon's sacrifice turned every last villain into dust and spared a few (Rita Repulsa, Lord Zedd, and Divatox) into becoming good.
Trivia[]
