Darkwing is a minor antagonist in Generation One of the Transformers franchise. He was based on a figure from the 1988 toyline.
Marvel Comics[]
Darkwing first appeared in Issue #42, where it was revealed that he and his colleague Dreadwind had travelled to Nebulos in search of Scorponok's Decepticons. They found that the Nebulans had poisoned the planet's fuel in order to prevent further Transformers involvement but were aided by the renegade scientist Hi-Test who found a way to convert the pair into Powermasters with a Nebulan partner acting as their engines. Darkwing was binary-bonded with the thief Throttle. They began raiding Nebulan cities searching for fuel for their new partners but were eventually stopped when a group of Autobots arrived on the planet and were also upgraded to Powermasters, including the newly-returned Optimus Prime.
The Marvel UK annuals indicate the pair later travelled to Earth, where they worked with the Seacons in a failed attempt to steal a power cell, and also assisted Scorponok in his attempt to construct a smart bomb to destroy Optimus Prime.
They later ended up working for the Meccanibals, using Hi-Test and Throttle as a front since the Meccanibals hated robots. They helped their masters locate food sources but found their identities exposed by the Autobots Cloudburst, Landmine and Sky Lynx and ended up fleeing for their lives.
They headed for Cybertron where they were recruited by a newly-returned Megatron to travel to Earth and retrieve the remains of Starscream, who he intended to brainwash as part of his plan to regain command of the Earth Decepticons. Darkwing and Dreadwind ended up battling the Autobot Pretender Classics, with the battle taking them out of Megatron's base just before it exploded. The two Powermasters were later part of the army of Transformers who fought against Unicron. Afterwards, they took part in Bludgeon's attack on Klo, during which they combined into Darkwing to hunt down old rival Getaway. They presumably retreated with the rest of the Decepticons when Autobot reinforcements arrived.
