The only thing I'm guilty of is looking after a troubled kid.
~ Sanders rationalizing his pedophilia.

Darren Sanders is the main antagonist of the Chicago P.D. episode "A Dead Kid, a Notebook and a Lot of Maybes". He is a pedophile who abuses the boys under his tutelage as a swim instructor.

He was portrayed by Kieran Campion.

Background[]

Darren Sanders was married with children and worked at a local school as swim coach and volunteered at the juvenile hall center to help straighten out troubled young men. He was seen by the community as a good man, with an impeccable reputation, especially since he was able to get some of his students to prestigious schools. Beneath this, he was a pedophile who used his position as a mentor to groom his victims, ultimately raping them and carrying this on at many schools. Several victims include Colin Blake and Ethan Jones, the latter being a vulnerable target after losing his father in the war.

A Dead Kid, a Notebook and a Lot of Maybes[]

Sanders would discover Colin and Ethan conspiring against him and knowing they intend to expose him. He hired a delinquent from Juvie named Jessie Mandel to intimidate them, by first intruding himself to them as Jeff and telling them that he was a victim of Sanders too, but the plan went awry when Colin ended up dead. Jessie would try and make Colins death look like a suicide by placing the gun he used to kill Colin in the dead boys' hands. However, it turns out Colin intended to place a pipe bomb to blow up Sanders in his car though it was dismantled.

While holding a grief session, Sanders is visited by officers Kim Burgess and Sean Roman. He is questioned about Ethan though reveals he was dismissed from the team a month ago before the officers find Ethan being beaten, after being implied to be involved in the bombing.

Much later, he is visited at his house by Burgess and Roman while confused when they reveal that Ethan was supposedly at his house, but he allows them to search. They investigate the house before Kim finds something very disturbing: Sanders' car spray-painted with the word Pedophile everywhere. He confirms it his car, while knowing it was Ethan's doing. Seeing this display, the pair are stunned and immediately take the man in for questioning.

At the precinct, Antonio and Voight question Sanders, noting on the pedophile allegation being a strong accusation and asking if it's true. Sanders denies this while Voight goes over Ethan's erratic behavior and realizes he was wrong about the latter going after his bullies when really, he might be going after his abuser. To throw them off, Sanders declares he was only guilty for trying to "guide" Ethan and starts discussing their activities. He is asked if he did the same for Colin Blake, another boy under his wing. Sanders then states Ethan turned Colin against him and defends himself, saying that Ethan lost his veteran father in the war and possibly saw him as the replacement. Sanders voiced how Ethan is angry at him rejecting this, resulting in his actions. Despite his protests, he is not believed but is released without much evidence to convict him. While walking out, Sanders comes face to face with Ethan, demanding Ethan leave him alone. Det. Jay Halstead watches this scene intently, to test how the situation plays out and notes on Ethan's timid behavior while Sanders tells everyone Ethan is upset by his dismissal. Jay then has Officer Kevin Atwater escort Sanders out while he goes to speak with Ethan. When Ethan is interrogated, Intelligence realize Sanders' true colors and decide to keep an eye on him.

Soon Intelligence investigate more and discover that the Jeff that Ethan and Colin met was actually an imposter. It also turns out Collin intended to blow up Sanders' car and that Ethan had backed out. The unit also find out Colin did not commit suicide but was murdered, due to the fact it wasn't gun residue on his hands. Further research show Sanders was not the culprit because of an alibi though realize he set up the meeting by liquidating money from his kid's college fund and that he volunteered at the Juvenile Hall center, so he most likely paid a juvenile delinquent to meet up with the boys and silence them. They soon identify the person as Jessie Mandel a delinquent who was just released. They tried to detain him, but he ends running and is struck by a train, killing him instantly. Intelligence has Jessie's death withheld from the public, so as to have a form of leverage over Sanders who they decide to bring in for questioning.

While having a barbecue with his family and friends, Det. Alvin Olinsky and Officer Adam Ruzek arrest him for crimes against children in front of the party. He protests but Ruzek grabs him and quietly threatens him into making a scene, just so he could have an excuse to slam his face and drag him across the lawn in front of his guests. However, Sanders complies with his arrest while telling his stunned wife to call his lawyer.

With Sanders in custody, he awaits his lawyer until Voight goes to speak with Sanders and bluffs that they have arrested Jessie who has told them everything to the payout and Sanders orchestrating the murder. He tells him how it's over for Sanders unless he has something to add to clear up the matter otherwise, he would be charged for the rapes and murder. Sanders stays quiet and Voight leaves the room. Sanders sits for a while until he gets erratic and shouts that Colin was not meant to die. With that, Voight comes back, and Sanders confesses to his crimes and states how he only told Jessie to intimidate Colin and Ethan into silence, not kill them. He says Jessie is to blame for the murder, while Voight listens more.

Ultimately, Sanders is convicted of the rapes and murder facilitation.

Killed Victims[]

Colin Blake - Shot by Jessie Mandel and was staged to make it look like a suicide: Orchestrated by Darren Sander, however he did not intend for Colin to be killed.
