~ Darth Maul to his master - his most famous quote. |

~ Maul sharing his tragic history with Ezra Bridger. |
“ | Formerly Darth. Now just Maul. | „ |
~ Maul rejecting his former Sith-aligned title. |
Darth Maul, later known as just Maul, is a major antagonist in the Star Wars franchise. A Dathomirian Zabrak Nightbrother male from Dathomir, he was a Sith Lord and the first apprentice of Darth Sidious prior to the Battle of Naboo and his abandonment by his former master.
After being left for dead on Naboo, Maul later resurfaced during the Clone Wars and sought revenge against all who had wronged him by turning to a life of crime and terrorism, plunging much of the galaxy into fear and chaos in the process. He is the son of Mother Talzin, the brother of Savage Opress and the arch-nemesis of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Personality[]
“ | He's a broken, unbalanced monster. | „ |
~ Obi-Wan describing Darth Maul. |
Darth Maul is driven by pure hatred of all things, particularly the Jedi. However, that trait also leads him to kill innocent civilians no matter the cost, as he desired to rule the galaxy for his own well-being. He also had respect and possibly even attachment for Darth Sidious, despite his torturous upbringing at his hands, but he also feared Sidious more than anything else, even after the two became enemies.
Maul focuses on complete victory at any cost and even his master finds it somewhat terrifying how much pain he will endure to succeed in his goals. Maul accepts any challenge given to him, but is extremely brutal, arrogant, aggressive, and gloating, best exemplified by a point where he believed he could fight and defeat the entire Jedi Order. Sidious often had to warn Maul to watch his pride, saying that he is no one-man army despite his fierce fighting skill. This hubris came to haunt him, during the Battle of Naboo, Maul assumed Obi Wan to be defeated and was completely caught off guard when Obi Wan lept from the shaft, recovered Qui Gon's lightsaber and bisected him.
Maul was once dependable and loyal to his master, but still wondered about his part in the Grand Plan of the Sith and knew he could not carry on the Sith's legacy, having only been trained as an assassin. He feared what might happen if Sidious were to meet his end unexpectedly, and had no idea of how to carry out the Grand Plan alone. Maul also realizes he cannot maintain any secret identity like Sidious does because of his appearance. He lacks a complete understanding of the galaxy despite his knowledge in the world of politics and crime, though he realizes the Jedi are the true enemy, not the Republic. Maul has no patience for the useless, but can take notice of the more talented. He is determined to be the greatest warrior via any means of self-improvement and his near-death at the hands of Obi-Wan has made him more bitter and insane.
Maul is a cunning, ruthless, traitorous, and manipulative killer who has no qualms with killing civilians or using taunting to unsettle his opponents in battle. His time in isolation had made him more patient and able to function as a leader in his quest for revenge, not just a follower. Maul is determined to kill Sidious and his new apprentice, Count Dooku, whom he considers a pretender Sith, and later Darth Vader, who he saw as a dangerous opponent. His isolation also amplified his hatred and spite for Obi-Wan, to whom he sadistically antagonizes and psychologically tortures, forcing the Jedi to watch him kill his lover.
Following his defeat on Naboo and learning of the events that transpired since, Maul is determined to usurp the Sith's plan and become the ruler of the galaxy instead of Sidious. This ambition carries on well after Order 66 and into the era of the Galactic Empire. Despite severing ties with the Sith and even coming to hate the order for stripping him of all he held dear, Maul is insistent on following the Rule of Two; he forced Savage to recognize that Maul was the Master and he the apprentice, and later tried to recruit Ashoka Tano and Ezra Bridger as apprentices.
Despite his cruelty, Maul cares about his family. He is absolutely loyal to his mother, Talzin, insisting on fighting with her to the bitter end after being cornered by Grievous, Sidious, and Dooku, though Talzin put his survival above hers and forced him to retreat. He is close with his brother Savage Opress. While he firmly establishes their working relationship as master and apprentice, Maul would prioritize Savage's safety and would help his brother if he suffered severe injury. Savage's death at the hands of Sidious fueled Maul's anger and hatred to the point he could hold his own against the Dark Lord for a brief time.
In his final moments, however, Maul lost most of his hatred for Obi-Wan, as he is embraced by him. When Obi-Wan confirms the fate of the Chosen One, Maul shares his belief that he would himself, Obi-Wan, and all those whose lives had been ruined by Sidious. This concludes that Maul was not entirely the monster that most saw him as, but truly a tragic character who had lost everything he cared about due to Darth Sidious' actions (much like his successor Darth Vader), but showed that he could not let go of his hate until his final moments.
Powers and Abilities[]
“ | Your passions give you strength. And through strength you gain power. You have seen it. You feel it. You must break your chains. | „ |
~ Maul teaching Ezra the dark side of the Force. |
Maul is extremely skilled and resourceful at wielding lightsabers and focuses more on physical skill than using spiritual and psychological tactics to crush his foes, though he has used these more lately. Maul is best known for his double-ended saberstaff the second blade of which he often used to catch his opponents off guard. He also combines his lightsaber wielding with hand-to-hand combat, making him a much more dangerous opponent. Maul is also one of the few who knows Teräs Käsi, a martial art created to fight Force-sensitives. He taught it to Dryden Vos, who, in turn, trained his lieutenant, Qi'ra. Maul is proficient enough in armed and hand-to-hand combat to defeat a trained, fully equipped Mandalorian with minimal reliance on the Force.
When Maul cannot win with pure martial skill, he uses tactics to win the day. He is amazingly skilled in using the Force, which grants him telekinetic abilities such as Force choke, Force grip, and could resist Force lightning. During Order 66, the overal surge in the Dark Side of the Force empowers Maul to the point where he could brutally kill down wave after wave of clones and cripple a star cruiser without any other weaponry. Maul is also skilled with technology, building his speeder bike and Dark Eye probe droids and modifying a protocol droid to become an assassin droid to protect his ship. Maul also possesses an extreme endurance to physical pain.
During the Battle of Naboo, Maul's lightsaber skills were strong enough to fight against both Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his padawan Obi Wan, kill Jinn and have the upper-hand over Obi Wan until he underestimated the latter. 10 years after his defeat, Maul found himself being able to hold his own against Obi Wan and even defeat him on occasions. He however, never reached the level of his former master, as when both he and Savage fought Sidious on Mandalore, Sidious easily overpowered both of them and killed Savage. While Maul briefly held his own against Sidious alone after Savage's death, he ended up being overpowered by his former master. In his final battle, he was defeated and killed by Obi Wan in a matter of seconds. Part of Maul's motivations for seeking out apprentices was because he knew he alone could not defeat Sidious.
Maul was also familiar with Nightsister potent magics, knowing the details of a scrying spell that he used by mixing potions of magical ichor to join his mind together with Ezra Bridger.
Relationships[]
Obi-Wan Kenobi[]
Maul has been Obi-Wan's nemesis since the day Maul killed Qui-Gon Jinn, the Jedi Master of Obi-Wan in 32 BBY. Enraged by the death of his master, Obi-Wan fought Maul with unfriendliness and after nearly falling into the void, he managed to raise himself up and cut Maul in two and watched him fall, thinking he had killed Darth Maul.
During the ten years he spent on Lotho Minor, Maul had gone mad and amnesiac, but he still remembered the one who ruined his life and cut off half of his body, even repeating his name in his moments of insanity. His hatred for Kenobi kept his spirit alive.
After gaining new legs, Maul would later meet Kenobi, bent on getting revenge against him. At one point, the Jedi Master tried to stop Maul from murdering Satine by bringing up his horrific past just to hurt him, revealing he's been to his village and knows his decision to leave wasn’t his. Maul became angry at these statements and wanted Kenobi to feel his anguish and killed Duchess Satine in front of Kenobi. Maul knew of their feelings, knowing her death would put his enemy in pain. When he saw that it did, he took great pleasure in watching his foe cradle of the dead body of his love. Rather than kill him out right like his brother had suggested, Maul had him imprisoned to rot.
Years after the rise of the Empire, Maul retained his hatred of Kenobi and wanted to see if Kenobi survived Order 66. After he discovered through the holocron that Obi-wan was indeed alive, he began to search the galaxy to fulfill his greatest desire the death of his greatest enemy by his hand.
Eventually, Maul discovered Kenobi was hiding on Tatooine, the very place they met. Maul found him tending to Ezra and remarked on his lackluster living, even mockingly suggesting leaving him to rot like the desert rat he became. Rather than resort in a snarky manner (like he would in his younger days), Kenobi calmly cast off his insults. His defiance infuriated Maul who challenged him to one final duel. Obi-Wan was forced to accept after Maul deduced his reasons for being on the desert planet and knew Maul had to die.
After being defeated by Obi-Wan, the dying Maul shared his belief that the Chosen One (Luke Skywalker) would avenge them both by destroying the Sith.
Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader[]
Sidious had originally sent Maul to kill Queen Amidala and abduct or kill Anakin when he was only 9 so he would never become a Jedi. Although it is unknown if they have ever met in person, Anakin likely despises and has a grudge against Maul; due to him murdering his close friend and father-figure, Qui-Gon Jinn. Anakin was willingly to capture Maul, believing his capture would help end the Clone Wars and supported Ahsoka's need to lay siege on Mandalore.
When Maul discovered that Anakin Skywalker was being manipulated by Darth Sidious to become his new apprentice, Maul organized his takeover of Mandalore to lure Anakin into his war so he can murder him, thus preventing Sidious from turning him to the dark side. However, Maul becomes disappointed when Anakin's former Padawan, Ahsoka Tano arrives to fight in the Siege of Mandalore instead of Anakin. It was later revealed that Maul had intentions to murder Anakin to prevent his former master, Darth Sidious, from turning him to the dark side.
At the end of the Clone Wars, Maul's prediction of Anakin comes true when he turns to the dark side and becomes Darth Vader. By extension, Maul knows that Anakin and Vader are one and the same and he counts Vader as his enemy. Maul has continually evaded Vader over the years, knowing fully well that he does not have the strength needed to successfully fight Vader alone on equal terms.
Darth Sidious[]
Darth Sidious kidnapped Maul from his mother when he was young to raise and train him to be his apprentice. Maul trained hard under Sidious, whom Maul gained some sense of attachment to and thus devoted himself to serving his master's will. When Maul was seemingly killed by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Sidious felt no real loss and simply replaced Maul with a new apprentice.
Over ten years later, they met again, Maul previously expressed fear at being in his master's presence. Sidious was pleased Maul survived while the latter knelt to Sidious pretending to wish to serve him again, but the Sith Lord saw through this and declared Maul as his rival. Maul and his brother dueled the Sith Master, though the latter proved too strong and killed Savage. Enraged by the death of his brother, Maul attacked his former master. In spite of putting up a good fight, he was ultimately defeated and was reduced to begging for mercy. Maul was tortured by Sidious using lightning while promising not to kill him while taking Maul to use as he saw fit. He used Maul as bait to lure out his mother and kill her, and when Maul escaped Sidious, no longer considered him a real threat.
A decade later, Maul's hatred and bitterness towards Darth Sidious (and the Sith as a whole) spurred him to find ancient Sith artifacts to use to exact his revenge. He even believed that the prophecy of the Chosen One, who would destroy the Sith once and for all, would come true.
Both before and after Sidious abandoned him, Maul regarded his master with awe and fear. Maul feared Sidious more than anything else, and sensing Sidious' imminent rise at the end of the Clone Wars put Maul under debilitating stress. At times, Maul showed clear signs of fear and agitation when merely talking about Sidious. Shortly before Order 66, this reached the point where Maul preferred death to being delivered back to Sidious.
Count Dooku[]
Maul and his successor have been enemies since his mind was restored by his mother, due to Maul hating Dooku for being his replacement as Darth Sidious' apprentice and Dooku hating Maul for being a threat to him. They also didn't regard each other as a true Sith Lord: Dooku saw Maul as nothing more than an animal and Maul saw Dooku as a pretender. However, during the Siege of Mandalore Maul had confessed to his Mandalorian followers that he realized he and Dooku were more alike than he realized and saw that they were both just pawns in Sidious's game.
Ezra Bridger[]
Ezra Bridger was tricked by Maul during their mission to Malachor into trusting him, paving the way for a potential master-apprentice relationship between the two. Maul also had an effect on Ezra with his words, causing him to begin to believe that to fight his enemies, he needed to think like them. Though Ezra saw Maul as an enemy and blames him in part for the supposed death of Ahsoka Tano, Maul still believed that Ezra may yet join him. The two joined the Holocrons that caused them to form a Force Bond. However, when Maul once again tried convincing Ezra to join him in Dathomir, the boy Ezra refused, Maul saw that their relationship was just one sided and left him on the planet. He later used Ezra in his plans to lure Obi-Wan Kenobi out of hiding by luring him to Tatooine through the Force Bond.
In the end, after Obi-Wan managed to kill Maul in combat, Ezra was saved from his temptations to lure him over to the dark side and make him his next apprentice.
Ahsoka Tano[]
Maul and Ahsoka did not meet until the Siege of Mandalore. For reasons unknown, Maul learned her name was Ahsoka Tano but he did not know anything else about her. Ahsoka, meanwhile, was aware of Anakin and Obi-Wan's past encounters, and did not hesitate to show her hatred towards Maul. In ways, after learning of the trial that Ahsoka went through, Maul saw that he and Ahsoka were very similar: they fought a higher power they spend their whole life with only to be cast out by their own orders and even gave her the choice to join him. Ahsoka considered an alliance, but after he made it clear he was going to harm Anakin, she turned on him and the two opponents dueled. After capturing Maul, she hoped to turn him over to the Jedi Council but when Order 66 was issued, she freed him, just so he could "cause chaos" as a distraction. Later, Ahsoka had the chance to take Maul but let him go in order to save Rex.
They unwillingly reunited on Malachor, where Maul had mocked her for her departure, and the two begrudgingly forged an alliance. However, when Maul made it his intentions to kill Ahsoka and Kanan and then take Ezra with him as an apprentice, Ahsoka fought him yet again. However, she left the rest of the duel to Kanan as she went to save Ezra from Darth Vader.
Maul is the secret head of the Crimson Dawn syndicate, but he lets Dryden Vos act as the face and handle the day-to-day operations. After Vos is killed by Qi'ra, Maul cows the latter into answering to him.
Savage Opress[]
Savage Opress was Maul's elder brother, though the two only formed a relationship as adults. They first met when Savage rescued Maul from madness on Lotho Minor, with Maul unaware of his identity in his maniac state. Savage was instrumental in helping Mother Talzin to repair his body and mind. After regaining his wits, Maul addressed Savage as his brother and they teamed up to fulfill Maul's wish for revenge. After some time, Maul insisted on treating Savage as his apprentice rather than his sibling, referring to him as "apprentice" and keeping him in a subordinate relationship.
However, Maul seemed to have genuinely loved Savage in his own way. When he saw Obi-Wan cut off his brother’s arm, he was quick to defend him to get him to safety and when Death Watch threatened Savage, did he back down from attacking them. Maul was also pleased to see Savage becoming wise on his own. He was later horrified to watch Sidious kill Savage, while reacting with sincere horror and grief, calling him "brother" and rushing to his side to comfort him during his final moments. He flew into a rage and attempted to kill his former master but failed in the end.
Even fifteen years later, Maul still mourned Savage, citing his death to Ezra as a grievance against the Sith and indirectly mentions him when he asks Ezra to join him as friends or brothers.

I was cast aside. I was forgotten. But I survived, and I can thrive in the chaos that is to come. Saxon, information is a valuable commodity. You are the one that I wish to speak with. Were you not cast out of your Order? Ahsoka: I left voluntarily. Maul: Yes, but you were motivated to leave by the hypocrisy of the Jedi Council. We were both tools for greater powers. Ahsoka: I am here to bring you to justice. Maul: Justice is merely the construct of the current power base. A base, which, according to my calculations, is about to change. Ahsoka: And Darth Sidious is behind it? Maul: He is behind everything. In the shadows, always, but soon, very soon, he will reveal himself. Ahsoka: With your help, the Jedi can stop Sidious before its too late. Maul: Too late for what? The Republic to fall? It already has and you just can't see it. There is no justice, no law, no order. Except for the one that will replace it. The time of the Jedi has passed. They cannot defeat Sidious. But together, you and I can. Every choice you have made...has led you to this moment. |

“ | Maul: You… You survived. Ahsoka: Is this your doing? Choose your words carefully. Maul: No, no, it was not my doing. I do not know what has occured, but surely, you have felt it. The voices crying out. The death. Ahsoka: The clones turned against me. Even Rex. I don't know why, they just suddenly weren’t themselves. Maul: Brilliant, brilliant. I was not privy to my master’s plan, but now, now I see it. He turned the Jedi's own army against them. |

~ Maul during the Order 66. |
“ | Maul: I know where you are. You're with me. Please put your weapon away. I...I mean you no harm. Ezra: Stay back. I'm warning you, old man. Maul: Forgive me, it... It's just, I've been alone so long. It's been years since I've spoken to anyone. Ezra: You live here alone? Uh, in the dark? Maul: Not by choice. My ship crashed. I'm trapped, marooned. I've had to scrounge and scrape to survive. Ezra: Look, I'm sorry. Okay? I wish I could help you, but I have to get back to my friends. Maul: Well, perhaps I could help you. Ezra: I doubt that. Maul: Why are you here? Ezra: I'm not gonna tell you that. Maul: You came for the same reason I did, years ago. You seek knowledge. Ezra: It's in the temple, isn't it? Maul: And I know the secret way to get inside, but, but I'm too old. I...I...I need help to open the door. Ezra: What's inside? Maul: Help me and find out. Ezra: Show me this doorway. Maul:Please, this way. Ezra: You first. Maul: Do you not trust me? Ezra: I don't know you. Maul: W-Well, then let's change that. Call me Old Master. |
„ |
~ Old Maul meets Ezra Bridger in Malachor. |
“ | Ahsoka: Maul, what game are you playing? Maul: I am the enemy of your enemy now, and I have my own reasons for wanting the Empire to fall. But we have little time. The one they call Vader will be here soon. Kanan: How do you know this? Maul: His dogs will tell him where we are. Two Jedi and a "part timer." Oh, he will come. He will not be able to resist us. Kanan: Okay, hold on, there is no "us." Dealing with Inquisitors is one thing, Vader is another. And I'm not convinced we're all on the same side anyway. Ezra: Kanan, we should trust him. Uh, look! He and I took this from the temple together! This is why we came here, right? To find out about the Sith. To find a way to beat them. Ahsoka, you said we came here for knowledge. Ahsoka: Ezra, there is no way a Jedi can unlock that holocron. Maul: But you may unlock the Temple itself. Ezra: How? Tell me how. Maul: At the top of the temple is a chamber. Connect the holocron to the obelisk within and you can unlock the ancient knowledge of the Sith. Ahsoka: Why are you working so hard to keep us here? Maul: I cannot defeat Vader alone. Ezra: I say we stay with him. Kanan: Yeah? Well, I say we go, so that settles it. Maul: Are you such cowards that you would run from this chance to defeat your enemies? Who slaughter your friends? Oh, how exciting. We're all on the same side. |

“ | My apprentice is activating the temple, or more precisely, this battle station, which I shall use to exact my revenge on ALL my enemies. | „ |
~ Maul after betraying Kanan Jarrus and Ahsoka Tano. |
“ | Ezra: Maul? You betrayed me. Maul: No, I betrayed your friends. But I would have remained loyal to you. Kanan: What do you what? Maul: The Sith holocron that our apprentice and I acquired on Malachor. Kanan: We don't have it. Maul: How unfortunate, because if that's true... then your friends have no future. (turns his lightsaber) Ezra: Okay, we have it. Just not with us. Kanan: We'll give it to you, as long as our friends remain safe. Maul: (turn off his lightsaber) Agreed. Good. And one more thing, your Jedi holocron, give that to me as well. Kanan: Fine. Maul: I shall be in touch with coordinates for our rendezvous. Don't disappoint me. |

~ Maul contacts Ezra and Kanan. |
“ | Maul: I assumed that this ship was merely a transport, but I realize it is much more than that. This is your home. Zeb Orrelios: You looking to move in? Maul: Captain, would it be rude of me to request a tour of your ship? Hera: Well, the airlock is down there, if you want to see yourself out. Maul: Show me around. I insist. Sabine: Hera, No. Maul: Mandalorian, you of all should trust me. For did I not once rule your people? |
„ |
~ Maul tells Hera to show him around. |
“ | Maul: Where does one who hides his identity hide his legacy? That is a curious smell. How colorful. Yes. This is it. A dull and dour chamber. These are the quarters of a Jedi. Show me where he keeps the holocron. Hera: I don't know anything about him. Maul: That's not true. You know all about Kanan Jarrus. Or should I use his real name? Caleb Dume. (Maul using the force to read Heras mind) Yes, it was your idea to recruit the apprentice. And it was from here that the boy found... No, he stole the holocron. |
„ |
~ Maul gets information from Hera. |
“ | You will remain alive... only so long as you're of use to me. | „ |
~ Maul threatens to kill the rebels. |
“ | Maul: Welcome, my young apprentice. I trust you found the Sith holocron illuminating? Ezra: I don't see our friends. Maul: They will remain my guests until we conclude our business. I will take you to them now. (to his droids) Escort my apprentice to the command center. (to Ezra) If you attempt to escape, or if the droids are deactivated, your friends will die. Ezra: Good to know. |
„ |
~ Maul and Ezra. |
“ | Maul: Truthfully, I was never trying to blind you. Kanan: Oh no. You were just trying to kill me. Maul: Well, if at first you don't succeed... (pushing Kanan inside) Try, try again. |
„ |
~ Maul tries to kill Kanan. |
“ | Maul: I lived up to my end of the bargain. Come, apprentice, sit. The holocron, if you please. I doubt that you comprehend the power that is within your grasp. Ezra: I know if we open these holocrons together, any question we ask will be answered. Maul: So you do understand. Well, my apprentice, what is your question? Ezra: You know what I want. I want to destroy the Sith. Maul: You are as ambitious as ever. As for me, I seek something much simpler, yet equally elusive. Ezra: What's that? Maul: Hope. Now, let us begin. |

~ Maul and Ezra about to meditate. |
“ | He lives. He lives. | „ |
~ Maul on finding out that Obi-Wan Kenobi is still alive. |
“ | Maul: This is a strange place. So remote. Yes, the Empire will have a difficult time finding you here. (Kanan and Ezra turns their lightsabers) You think I came here to fight? I came here to speak with my apprentice. Kanan: He's not your apprentice. Maul: Yet. Ezra: How did you find me? Maul: When you abruptly severed our connection with the holocron, you mixed up the information. You learned a bit of what I want to know, and I learned a bit of what you wanted to know. But there were fragments and memories left in my mind. Ezra: Like the location of our base. Maul: Yes. Very good. You do learn fast, apprentice. Ezra: Look, I can't make sense of what I saw. I couldn't even describe it if I wanted to. Maul: And that is why you need to come with me, so I can retrieve the answers which are just out of reach. Ezra: So you get your answers, but what do we get out of it? Maul: I will keep your rebel base secret. Kanan: No deal. You're not walking off this rock in one piece. Maul: I have planted a beacon nearby. Strike me down, and it will activate, revealing your presence to the Empire. You have knowledge that is rightfully mine. I have knowledge that you want. The key to defeating the Sith. What I propose will satisfy us both. Ezra: All right. Kanan: Ezra, you're not doing this. Ezra: He's going to expose Chopper Base. Kanan: We'll move, build a new base. Ezra: Maul won't hurt me, Kanan. He needs me. Besides, this might be our last chance to learn the secret of how we can destroy the Sith. Kanan: I do not like this. But we don't really have a choice, do we? I'm gonna trust you on this. Ezra: All right. We have a deal. Maul: After you, my apprentice. |
„ |
~ Maul speaking to Ezra and Kanan on Atollon. |
“ | Ezra: Where are we? Maul: That is Dathomir, my home. Ezra: If this is your home, where are your people? Where is everybody? Maul: I am the last survivor. My family, the Nightsisters, were killed. Masterful witches they were. A threat to the Empire. I know that you can relate. Ezra: These witches, they use the Force? Maul: Some aspect, yes. But it was their connection to this planet that made them strong. That is why we are here, to perform some old magic. Yes. Yes, everything that we need lies within the cave. Ezra: I'm not going any further until you tell me how this works. Maul: The only way to access the knowledge we seek is to merge our minds again. The effect will only last a moment. Just enough time for each of us to find the answers to our questions. Trust me, Ezra. I only want the answers I deserve, nothing more. Ezra: What do we have to do? Maul: Come. I have gathered many things, secrets to help us restore our memories. Ezra: Look at all this junk. Maul: Do not touch anything. These are artifacts from my past, from a time when my power was almost absolute. |
„ |
~ Maul and Ezra on Dathomir. |
“ | Maul: I have studied the ways of the Nightsisters and found a spell that suits our needs. This... This altar is the focus of their ancient power. Now, to initiate the merge, we... We must each drink this potion. Ezra: You first. Maul: (Maul drinks it all) To complete the spell, you must drink it all. Just like me, all of it. |
„ |
~ Maul and Ezra about the begin a spell that will give them their answers. |
“ | Of course. It ends where it began. A desert planet with twin suns. | „ |
~ Maul realize that Obi-Wan is on Tatooine. |
“ | The spirits of the Nightsisters must be compensated for the use of their magic. The price is our flesh and blood. Don't let them touch you. | „ |
~ Maul warns Ezra about the spirits of the Nightsisters. |
“ | We cannot defeat the spirits of the Nightsisters. Follow me. I will show you how to save your friends. Faster. We must reach the cave entrance. | „ |
~ Maul and Ezra escapes the spirits of the Nightsisters. |
“ | Ezra: Wait. Why aren't they coming after us? Maul: The altar is the source of their power. They cannot venture beyond the cave. It is unfortunate about your friends, Ezra. But this... This is your opportunity to embrace your destiny, as my apprentice. Ezra: I told you, that is never going to happen. Maul: Forget the past. Forget your memories. Forget your attachments. Our futures converge on a planet with two suns. We can walk that path together as friends, as brothers. Ezra: My friends are trapped in there because of us. I can't just leave them. Maul: You disappoint me... Ezra Bridger |
„ |
~ Maul tries one last time to make Ezra his apprentice. |
“ | Lost. I am lost. And yet...I can feel...his presence. So close. So close. I can see him in my mind's eye. Kenobi... KENOBI. Will it end here like this? No... no. | „ |
~ Maul on Tatooine searching for Obi-Wan. |
“ | Maul: Look what has become of you. A rat in the desert. Obi-Wan: Look what I have risen above. Maul: I've come to kill you, but perhaps it's worse to leave you here, festering in your squalor. Obi-Wan: If you define yourself by your power to take life, a desire to dominate, to possess, then you have nothing. Maul: And what do you have? |
„ |
~ Maul after finally finding his old enemy, Obi-Wan. |
“ | Why come to this place? Not simply to hide. Oh, you have a purpose here. Perhaps you are protecting something. No. Protecting someone. | „ |
~ Maul understanding why Obi-Wan is hiding on Tatooine. |
“ | Maul: Tell me... is it the Chosen One? Obi-Wan: He is. Maul: He... will... avenge us. |

Trivia[]
- Darth Maul's signature weapon is his own red dual-bladed lightsaber which resembles a spear.
- In The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul was physcially portrayed by Ray Park, a martial arts specialist, and was voiced by comedian Peter Serafinowicz. Many fans wanted to know more about Maul after the movie, mostly due to his lack of lines, resulting in expansion on his character in books and comics.
- Maul was designed by Iain McCaig, who designed him based on the concepts of his "worst nightmare", requested by George Lucas. One of his initial concepts featured a design where Maul was portrayed as a pale white figure covered in blood-red ribbons. The design was scrapped as Lucas felt it was too scary, though it was later used as a basis for the Nightsisters (specifically for Mother Talzin).
- Maul is the main antagonist of the Star Wars: Twilight of the Republic Playset in Disney Infinity 3.0.
- It has been suggested that the Jedi never knew Maul's name, though there have been times in the Expanded Universe when the Jedi referred to him by name, these are considered errors.
- Much like Count Dooku and General Grievous, Maul is one of Palpatine's lieutenants in the Star Wars prequel trilogy who each foreshadow a different aspect of what happens in Anakin's future as Darth Vader. In Maul's case, it's the apprentice who enforces Sidious' will and is the embodiment of pure anger and rage who kills one of the main protagonist's mentor and close ally and that later survives a terrible injury while being presumed dead after being defeated by the Jedi that would turn him into a cyborg, and that later reemerges filled with hate and desire of vendetta against Obi-Wan Kenobi, as seen in the Disney+ 2022 series Obi-Wan Kenobi.
- Maul can be considered as the "evil counterpart" of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader:
- Both were slaves as children but then were passed off to learn the ways of the Force.
- Both were incredibly strong with the Force at a young age, highlighted by Palpatine in Episodes I and III.
- Both formed teacher-student/brotherly relationships with an older warrior (Savage Opress for Maul and Obi-Wan Kenobi for Anakin).
- Both saw their mothers die in front of them.
- Both were bested by Obi-Wan Kenobi in battle by getting nearly killed and were restored to life with cybernetics.
- Both were eventually cast aside by Sidious in the favor of another potential apprentice (Maul for Dooku and Vader for Luke).
- Maul can be considered as the "evil counterpart" of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader:
- Maul's last words to Obi-Wan were a foreshadowing of Obi-Wan's death in A New Hope, the first film in the original Star Wars trilogy.
- Benicio del Toro and Billy Bob Thornton were both considered for the role of Darth Maul before Ray Park was cast.
- Maul appears in Lego Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out with Sam Witwer even reprising his role from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This is non-canonical since the special is set after A New Hope and Maul died before A New Hope.
- Maul is one of the few Star Wars characters who survived the prequel trilogy, excluding the characters who were in the original trilogy. (ie; Obi-Wan and Sidious).
- His Lego figure, as well as his appearance in The Empire, Strikes Out and Lego Star Wars: Darth Maul's Mission, depicted his horns as black.
- The Lipstick-Face Demon, the main antagonist of the 2010 horror film Insidious, is very similar to Darth Maul in his physical appearance. The reason for this is that Maul was the inspiration.
- In the comics incarnations of Darth Maul, when he was once a boy, he had two little horns near his ears but in the film, he has more than two horns and they are placed differently.
- In the film, Maul was somewhat silent, calm, and not very sadistic. But after his mind was restored by his mother, Maul was never the same again: He became very talkative, wanting at any price to take revenge, provocative, manipulative, and even more sadistic than Dooku himself. It is possible that the ten long years he spent on Lotho Minor had changed him forever despite his fully restored mind.
- In "Twilight of the Apprentice" Maul was originally supposed to be killed by Darth Vader but that was ultimately changed so that Maul survived until he met with Obi-Wan on Tatooine where he finally met his death. This foreshadowed Maul's death in Star Wars Rebels.
- Maul is the second Sith apprentice to die, the first being Count Dooku, and the third being Darth Vader. Maul is also the second oldest Sith apprentice, only behind Dooku.
- Ironically, while Maul in his last moments believed Luke Skywalker would destroy the Sith and avenge him, the one who would end up doing so was none other than one of his replacements as Darth Sidious' apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, the boy that Qui-Gon Jinn protected from him years ago. Luke did play a role in Anakin's redemption though.
- In his Angry Birds: Star Wars version, he retains his personality from before, though his reveal shows him comically getting frustrated with his lightsaber. He can spin his lightsaber around him. Also, he is not cut in half like his original incarnation was. He is portrayed by a minion pig.
- While Sam Witwer provided Maul's voice in the final cut of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Peter Serafinowicz was originally brought in and recorded his lines for the movie. His take on Maul was cut in favor of Witwer, however.
- In The Rise of Skywalker, Darth Sidious said that all of the spirits of the dead Sith were part of him but as Darth Maul was thrown out as Sith and he rejects his title of Sith, his spirit probably never merged with his former master and was not wiped out when Sidious was finally killed by Rey.
- Maul dying in Obi-Wan's arms at the end of "Twin Suns" serves as a parallel to the deaths of Qui-Gon Jinn and Satine Kryze who also died in his arms in a similar pose. Ironically, both Jinn and Kryze were killed by Maul.
- Ray Park, the actor that portrayed Maul in the movies, also provided the motion capture for the character in Season 7 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This is most notably shown during Maul's battle with Ahsoka Tano.
- The lightsaber that Maul uses in Solo: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars Rebels instead of his first lightsaber which he lost on Mandalore during his fight against Ahsoka Tano bears a striking resemblance to an Inquisitor lightsaber.
- Maul can be considered a overarching antagonist of Star Wars since due to him killing Qui-Gon Jinn, Anakin and Count Dooku fell to the darkside thus indirectly responsible for every atrocity they did.
- Oddly Maul's profile on StarWars.com databank, has Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in his list of appearances, instead of Solo: A Star Wars Story.
