Daryl is a minor antagonist in the 2016 manga series, Moriarty the Patriot, and its 2020 anime adaptation. He serves as the secondary antagonist in The Man with the Golden Army arc. He was once part of Sebastian Moran's troop before it was revealed that he was the traitor responsible for getting his squad killed and is the right-hand man of Graham Dunderdale.

Personality[]

Daryl is a textbook psychopath who indulges in causing the deaths of many innocent people and soldiers alike without hesitation. As a firm believer in Dunderdale's "cause" to ensure the war is prolonged, he's otherwise a zealot who takes pride in the massacres he's staged and saw Dunderdale as the sole "patriot" who'd risked as many sacrifices to preserve "world peace" as they claimed.

While stating such intentions, Daryl's proven to be hypocritical as he's also killed people from Britain, both bystander and soldier alike, to the point he couldn't help but admit how evil he truly is, demonstrating his boastful and depraved nature even further. Even when the odds were against him, Daryl's proven to be a coward who'd take his own life rather than accept the responsibility of his own wrongdoings. He's also rather misogynistic, best shown how he treats Miss Moneypenny.

Biography[]

Daryl, at some point, worked under Duke Graham Dunderdale as his right-hand man throughout the war between Britain and Afghanistan, from there, he was tasked to be a mole within the British Army. During that time, Daryl was stationed in Sebastian Moran's troop, the Bengal Engineer Corps, at that time and seemingly at least got along with them.

However, one day, they received a direct order from the Joint Chief of Staff to relocate to another territory and while crossing there, he killed one of Sebastian's comrades while he was fetching water from the river, decapitating his head and then tossing it over to Sebastian and the rest without knowing. It was from that moment, he had sold them out to the enemies. From there, Afghanistan soldiers would open fire, shooting and killing the troops left and right, including Zach, whom he gave a letter to Sebastian for his family. With the crossfire continuing as the Afghanistan soldiers resort to the use of grenades, Randy, another fellow comrade of Sebastian's, was caught in the explosion with the latter losing his right hand as a result. Sebastian survived the ordeal and vowed vengeance on the one responsible for his comrades' deaths, unaware it was Daryl's doing.

Continuing to assist Dunderdale with prolonging the war in Afghanistan, it's implied that Daryl oversees the manufacturing and replication of Russian-stylized weapons sold to the Afghanistan military when doing so. When the factory got blown up by Sebastian Moran and Miss Moneypenny, Daryl reports to Dunderdale regarding the situation and figured there were perpetrators at that time, lying in wait to prepare for the unexpected and at the same time, attempting to assassinate the new Afghan King in Calcutta during a party he'll host at his secondary residence, which is where Sebastian and Moneypenny will be at that time. As Sebastian was able to get time to handle Dunderdale's assassination, unbeknownst, Daryl was seen among the crowd and eyed on Moneypenny, beating her and later taking her hostage.

Just as Sebastian was about to pull the trigger on Dunderdale, Daryl came bursting from the doors, holding Moneypenny at gunpoint, shocking Sebastian who believed (when Daryl was acting as a comrade at that time) he was dead at that time and recognized him. He demanded Sebastian to step down on assassinating Dunderdale, all while explaining his and the latter's motives for prolonging the war for the sake of ensuring Russia stays on track point with Afghanistan and "world peace" to prevent a larger scale war happening between both nations with the British involved, at the same time, admitting to be the one who sold out Sebastian's troop. Hitting Moneypenny for calling him out, Daryl would fully admit that he is "evil incarnate", using others to his own advantage and boasting about them before retorting Sebastian if he's in the wrong, dismissing the lives he "traded" to "protect" Britain's people while declaring Dunderdale as the "one true patriot". He then reveals he and Dunderdale had set explosives around the party, staging it as a "terrorist attack" that would continue the war. Depicting it as a war for both countries to be in a dire state while the motherland (Britain) prospers as Sebastian put it, Daryl confirms otherwise of the motive's reason.

He then tries to convince Sebastian to join their "cause", to which Sebastian agrees without hesitation as Daryl orders him to shoot Moneypenny to prove his compliance, aiming at her forehead and seemingly killing her, much to Daryl's amusement, unaware that Sebastian used blanks to fake her death later on. Joining them to cause the bombing, the explosives went off as planned, with Daryl reacting with high sadism at the sight of the explosion and giddily smiling about it. When Sebastian questioned Daryl's reaction to their comrades' demise, he simply put "as good as it does now", which the former has him at gunpoint. Surprised, Daryl calls him out for betrayal, which Sebastian also points out the obvious on the many lives he betrayed and imaging it as a game of chess for the sake of his "idealistic fantasy" as the latter put it in Daryl's overview of his actions, even calling him and Dunderdale out for their involvement on the war's prolonging and being "bloody tosspots" for playing gods amongst all.

Frightened for his life, Daryl tries to shoot Sebastian quickly before the latter shoots the gun away from him, not before giving him a chance to choose how he'll die, either kill himself to die an undignified death but still manage to "save lives" as his previously claimed. As Daryl proceeds to commit suicide hesitantly but out of anger to Sebastian depicting the kind of man he is, Daryl seemingly shoots the latter dead, feeling overjoyed as he suggests to Dunderdale to go into hiding and convince the government regarding their cause. To his shock, Sebastian survived the assault and revealed to switch the gun's barrel to one filled with blanks, even revealing Moneypenny survived in time to evacuate the king and the partygoers before the explosion begun. At his last moment, he tried to plead Sebastian before the latter already shot him dead, finally avenging his comrades but at the same time, kill Dunderdale for his crimes offscreen.
