“ | You must be the "demon slayer"... Interesting. I am Date Shigezane, the mightiest warrior in the land... You've no hope of slaying this demon! | „ |
~ Shigezane upon meeting William Adams. |
Date Shigezane is a minor antagonist in the 2017 video game, Nioh, serving as a major antagonist in the DLC, Dragon of the North. He would later become a supporting character in the DLCs, Defiant Honor and Bloodshed's End.
He is the cousin of his lord, Date Masamune, making him a member of the Date clan. Acting as the top general of his army, he is devoted to protecting his lord and ensuring he accomplishes his ambitions.
He is voiced by Jouji Nakata.
Appearance[]
Date Shigezane is seen wearing his signature armor consisting of a samurai armor in gold, black and purple coloring. His helmet has a golden centipede attached to it as an ornament, referencing his Guardian Spirit, the Bisha's Centipede. His right armored arm has a slightly different plating in comparison to his left as it resembles the carapace of a centipede.
When he transformed himself into a yokai, his body grew considerably large and monstrous to a degree, making his armor be torn up and unfitting for him to wear. He now has two large horns from his forehead, which appear to resemble the antennas of a centipede. His face appears to be cracked, exposing orange light underneath, with the right side of his face being black and having an orange, bright eye. His most noticeable trait however is his right arm, which has taken on the form of a large, black centipede itself. He also appears to have ōdachi stabbed into his back.
Personality[]
As a longtime friend and family member of his cousin, Date Shigezane remains devoted to protecting Date Masamune and swears his loyalty to him. Despite being cousins, their relationship is described to be more akin to close brothers. Because of his fierce loyalty to Masamune, Shigezane would often throw himself in any battle to ensure the safety of his lord, while at the same time, refusing to retreat from his enemies.
This lead to his reputation being known as the Unrivalled Warrior, who would go undefeated in the battlefield. He even went as far to transforming himself into a yokai to protect Masamune, showcasing more of his immense loyalty. However, this leads to Shigezane questioning himself of how long he must bear the soul of a man, believing that his yokai transformation was his punishment for relying on the Amrita stones. Nonetheless, he feels heavily determined to carry out his duty on leading the Kurohabaki.
Despite his dedication, Shigezane knows when to put aside differences as he convinced Masamune that there was no longer need to worry about the land for their sake after being restored to his human self by Hattori Hanzo.

Quotes[]
“ | Date Shigezane was a general in the Date family, and served as the lord of Watari Castle in Mutsu province. He was the cousin and long time friend of Masamune, and the two were said to be as close as brothers. Shigezane eagerly threw himself into even the most difficult battles, earning him the trust of the clan's retainers for his unparalleled bravery. At the Battle of Hitotoribashi, he used a spirit stone to boost his strength and take on the enemy in an effort to allow Masamune to escape to safety. After going to serve the Toyotomi, he pretended to flee for a time so he could gather information from around the land. Eventually, he learned the details of the tragedy caused by Amrita at Sekigahara and reported its devastating power to Masamune. He later rejoined the Date, but his previous use of the spirit stone caused him to begin transforming into a yokai. Eventually, he lost all sense of reason, and withdrew to an isolated location known as Tono deep within Date territory while leading a special fighting unit known as the Kurohabaki. | „ |
~ Date Shigezane's first bio description. |
“ | Shigezane's transformation into a yokai was halted due to Hattori Hanzo's use of the sacred waters of Mount Ibuki. Afterwards, Shigezane convinced Masamune to abandon his plans for rebellion. Although he did feel some sense of obligation towards Hanzo, he did little to act upon it as he knew that Tokugawa Ieyasu had grown old and did not have much time left. Indeed, both men were known not only for their bravery and skill in battle, but also for their keen intellect and strategic acumen. | „ |
