David is a minor antagonist and one of the Socs in S.E. Hinton's novel The Outsiders. He is one of the Socs who jump Ponyboy and Johnny in the park and is the one who tries to drown Ponyboy in a fountain.
David did not appear in the 1983 movie adaptation of The Outsiders.
David was a member of the Socs, the rival gang of the Greasers. His appearance is not clearly described in the novel, though Ponyboy described him as tall. After Greasers Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny Cade ran away from home at about two in the morning, they went to a park. A group of Socs, including Bob Sheldon, Randy Adderson and David, soon arrived at the park and confronted them. Bob and Ponyboy had an exchange of insults and Ponyboy spat at the Socs. Bob then told David to give Ponyboy a "bath". David and the other Socs attempted to drown Ponyboy in a nearby fountain, while the Greaser tried to fight back. Johnny killed Bob, prompting the Socs to flee and saving Ponyboy's life.
Later, Randy pulled in with his Mustang and approached Ponyboy to talk to him. He jumped out of his car with the other Socs who confronted Ponyboy at the park, including David.
