David "Dr. Dave" Lowry is the main antagonist of the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation episode "Sweet Jane". Lowry is an esteemed local dentist and serial killer and rapist of women arriving in Las Vegas over the course of decades.

He's portrayed by the late Ned Beatty.

Biography

With his late wife, Lowry had two daughters, who grew to be an oral surgeon and a homemaker, respectively. Lowry was in practice in Las Vegas as a dentist for several decades, most recently at the Colebert Dental Group. Lowry long buried his criminal history of being a sadistic serial killer and rapist of various women and girls who entered Las Vegas, usually in years during the highest crime rates in the city. Lowry looked for women and girls to target through his patients, usually at-risk due to being runaway and having drug addictions, believing no one would pay attention.

Lowry preferred white women and girls in their teens and 20s, with blond hair and blue eyes. They were sedated in his captivity, using various drugs he used professionally, were hard to come by, and were increasingly hard to detect with forensic testing or less tested for. Lowry would rape the women and girls in his captivity while wearing a condom, bite them for his own thrill, and repeatedly choke them to torture them to death. Lowry's cleanup evolved as his murders continued, taking the women's clothes, washing their bodies, and cleaning their smaller crevices with alcohol and cotton swabs more increasingly and thoroughly. Four women for four decades were found killed by Lowry, usually in more dangerous neighborhoods with no IDs, and their cases were unconnected and went cold. All of them were posed with their right arms raised to the levels of their heads, to look like they were waving goodbye.

Detective Michael Keppler is assigned the investigation as his first case with the LVPD Crime Lab, when Veronica Sorensen is killed in 2007. He picks up meticulously on the killer's experience and preference of women and girls to rape and murder, so he finds the three other known women Lowry killed, in 1975, 1989, and 1999 in police databases. Many of the investigations were either lackluster or came up with no leads, evidence being destroyed in storage occasionally and none of the three women's names being found. Keppler realizes the killer had dental experience from the dental work on the women and the identified drugs used to sedate them. Plotting the locations the women were found and drawing a diagram to find out where the killer lived or worked based on predicted activity from the murders, Colebert is identified. Lowry is the suspect, and he stonewalls the police by not giving the names of the other girls, discreetly taunting them by saying maybe the killer was attracted to her from her repaired teeth.

When bite marks on the women are found in bruises on their bodies, Lowry gives a dental impression, rubbing in how since teeth alignment and quality change overtime, the forensics can't guarantee results. But he's brought in for interrogation by Keppler and Captain Jim Brass, where they reveal what they found in his dental records: he repaired a diastema, a gap in his teeth, from a scheduled surgery conducted the same year the second woman was murdered, his records at the time being a perfect match. Lowry accepts his defeat and casually confesses, and when he's told to give the names of the other women, he refuses to avoid spoiling his memories. Lowry is put on the death row shortly after.
